  1. I think Nomoss defiantly should not be driving, far to old. As for LBF, well I just hope you don't kill anyone with your cavalier and somewhat luddite attitude. I would mind betting you both drive Saab's. NickP. The reason these system will become compulsory in the next few years is because of those tailgaters, it will stop them. Either because when their current car goes bank they won't be able to afford a new car or if they can it will have these systems built in.
  2. If the speed on a motorway is reduced due to an accident it will automatically reduce speed. If there is roadworks on a very minor road although it can read a roadside speed signs there are times due to positioning that it can't. It has sensors at the front, sides and back that stops it colliding with things and can change lanes if the car in front slows quickly and the car knows another lane is free if not it will also break quickly. It will react much faster than you ever can. It is a myth that you may have to speed to get out of trouble especially in modern cars. It is to make driving safe for the rest of us that these systems have been built and will be made compulsory in cars over the coming years. You won't have to worry about the "other" on the road because their cars will also be fitted with the technology. Some high end motor cycles are starting to have these systems as optional extras. In the UK fortunately only just under 4% of drivers speed according to the DVLC. Like I said fortunately I will never "bump" into you on the road because I don't drive in France. If you come to Germany however do be aware that if people have cameras in their cars and come across a person speeding they can upload the footage to the states police website and they will prosecute the offender. That is of course on top of the speed cameras. Oh and by the way my car is the next generation of Ford Focus, not exactly exotic is it. I sometimes drive the next generation of Ford Fiesta as well but my primary car is the Focus. Both are the same as the current versions except they have the tech and are electric. Please don't be stupid enough and say it will be the end of Ford because all the manufacturers are doing the same. The only place you will not have these mandatory systems is the UK.
  3. Road works, funny enough yes it can most of the time, even my old TomTom knows where they are and navigates me round them and even traffic jams in the rush hour. Tat technology has been around for 10 to 15 years. Like I said I don't speed and neither do many others. Indeed we are the norm and you are not. You have a very good chance of surviving hitting a tree at 80kph these days and you will defiantly survive a crash with a tree at 40kph especially if your car meets EU standards. If your car won't then you need to buy a modern car, at least something made within the last 10 years. Tell me how sticking to the speed limit makes you unsafe. Where the cars driving over the speed limit that hit you twice driving at the speed limit on the road? Now then I will debate no longer because you are starting to lose it and getting personal, well you have been since your second post really but then people like yourself often revert to this form when they can't argue their case when the evidence shows they are absolutely wrong. I hope you live a long and interesting live although I doubt it if you carry on the way you are.
  4. My car is very clever and next year you can buy one. It currently uses GPS which is accurate to within 3m currently but will be down to 1m shortly. It knows where it is anywhere on the surface of the earth, what the speed limit is there and yes indeed it can deal with all those changes in road speeds. It will stop before hitting anything head on but then many cars have that technology now. You clearly have no idea about car technology, where it is and where it is going. If you don't know what the speed limit is you shouldn't be driving. I have never heard such rubbish.
  5. Firstly I don't speed because my car cannot speed. It has technology that does not allow it to speed. The same technology that is already installed in some cars but currently is only optional to use but that will change more so with electric cars. The only time I guess you could say I speed is on a test track but that's not on a public road and it is only me, another engineer and nobody else. Personally I could lose my job if I were ever caught speeding so it's just not worth the trouble. I do not have a need anymore to drive in France. You do know that some insurance companies already give cheaper insurance for those of us that drive more safely and within the law. Also that if you have an accident when speeding you may not be covered by your insurance and in some countries driving with no insurance is a criminal offence. Because people speed does not mean everyone else needs to speed and it is against the law and that's what you seem blind to. I take it that if you saw a group of people with their heads in lighted ovens you would do the same. Still you do what you want even if you break the law I really don't have anything else to say to a self confessed criminal. Here are a couple of stats for you which indicate why there is EU pressure to control the speed of cars. The number of people caught for speeding has increased by 83% since 2011. I can't put a table into a post because it is too wide and anyway the information really belongs to my employer but I will give you these figures for 2019 which show how many endorsements were put on peoples licences in the UK and how much over the speed limit they were traveling. This does not show how many were caught and attended speed management courses which do no attract an endorsement. Your group (45-54 years old) +10mph - 7,904 +20mph - 443 +30mph - 283,859 +40mph - 198 +50mph - 44,154 +60mph - 2 Total number of endorsements issued 336,559 From the information you have given not only are you in the age group that is most likely to offend but you are also in the speed group who get the most endorsements. 17-24 years old +10mph - 2,011 +20mph - 117 +30mph - 85,983 +40mph - 22 +50mph - 17,994 +60mph - 0 Total number of endorsements issued 106,127 Other totals by age. 25 to 34 - 263,229 35 to 44 - 300,490 45 to 54 - 336,559 55 to 64 - 207,562 65 to 74 - 114,236 75+ - 51,959* *Possibly a false positive because there are not that any drivers at 75+ although with people living longer this figure has gone up a bit above the average. So it seems you are a follower and not a leader.
  6. You can ask the DVLC under the freedom of information act. I have the information as part of my job. Reaction times are in the public domain and an example that somebody of your intelligence will be able to follow can be found on the following link. https://sites.google.com/site/1314s1p4g1/lab-1 The bottom line however is you are perpetual French law breaker and by your attitude are quite proud of the fact. You are basically an accident waiting to happen and I hope you don't take any innocent person or people with you. I drove once in Paris during the rush hour without a problem. It didn't take me 8 years of practice. Didn't have an accident (never have had an accident come to that nor have I ever broken the law driving or otherwise).
  7. Judging by the years you have given and assuming you got your licence at 17 you need to be around 48 or slightly older. In the UK according to the DVLC puts you in the age group of 45 to 54 which is the worst group for accidents, speeding and drink driving. That's three times more than 17 to 24 year olds and six times more than 75 years or older. Your reaction time is also at it's lowest but good news it will return over time. In other words regardless of what you may think of yourself you are at your age an accident waiting to happen and if it happens when you are driving at the speeds you say and somebody is killed I suspect we are talking a custodial sentence. Fortunately for me I will more than like never be in the same place as you at the same time you are driving your car.
  8. Never mind it would be wasted on you.
  9. I take it your in the 55 to 75 age group?
  10. Investment Trust https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Investment_trust There are load of other sources as well. If you know what an ISA is then that's a from of investment trust. You could also look at HSBC who are not just a bank but offer investment as well. You can put money in and move money around their accounts in any currency. If you know anyone who takes Which magazine they do a financial supplement every month telling you the best places to put you savings broken down in to amount, how long you want it locked in and the interest rate. Be wary of the fella on the phone and the one that knocks on your door unless invited. My mum nearly got caught on one of them. Said he was from Lloyds bank (with whom she did not have an account) and told her the best place was to invest in a movie film of all things. Best to say he left the house quicker than he came in.
  11. I read something about the EU and "financial passports" today in one of the Sunday papers. I probably would wait till July before making any decision about where to put my money country wise. Some say thinks could get difficult with regards to moving money between the UK and EU and others say it won't make any difference. The real truth is nobody knows so it might pay to wait and see.
  12. Lets hope we can discover what happened to this aircraft in Iran. It was not old and the Iranians won't let Boing or anyone else see the black box. So was it shot down, did it fail or what. Even the US have "accidently" shot down airliners in the past. I figure it's like driving. You can be the best in the world but it' the worst one that actually kills you. Having flown on El Al twice now I can tell you that they have by far the best security. El Al are the only airline that since early 2000 has anti missile systems installed in it's aircraft. I think I would feel safer flying with them than anyone else. $17,000 gets you "Miniture Hit-To-Kill" ground to air missile and that's what I would be most worried about. It's a personal thing I guess, it's just there are some incredibly stupid people about.
  13. Don't you ever read anything? You are getting somewhat annoying now. I never claimed that at all in fact if you can get off your bottom and read my posts that is why I said you would need to get a new card because your not a member of the EU etc. after 31st Jan. Your last sentence, that's exactly what I said if you can read. Mint - if I was you I would listen to Norman, he knows what he is talking about and he certainly helped others like my dad get his card without problem. Don't trust any source other than the French government websites of which some documentation is in English. One of them I remember had an English language email address for those that had a problem getting their card (down the bottom on the right if memory serves). Nobody can stop you getting a card it is your right as the French government websites clearly show.
  14. Norman - I guess yours may not be a credit card size given two photo's under each other where as my dads is staggered, one on the right the other on about half way down on the left. Other that that the wording is exactly the same as yours. My dad followed your advice at the time plus that of another member who was in the same department as he. Didn't have any problems getting the meeting to take his stuff in and have his fingerprints taken and the card turned up six weeks later exactly as they said it would. Your point about none government sources is exactly what I was trying to get over, only use them. Things get complicated when you use a third party website. Firstly it is their interpretation of the actual law and then you will put you interpretation on top. I can remember by dad years ago getting into a panic about his French car registration number because a certain English language newspaper (still be sold I believe) in France said that you had to get them changed because of the new number plates that were coming out that year. What the article referred to was something on a French government website that told people not to forget to change the plate on their trailer to match their car if they got a new car with the new number plate on. That same newspaper has made quite a few gaffs over the years although I am not implying that everything they print is rubbish but you have to check. Fortunately we don't need these type of newspapers in Germany because most of the big "normal" newspaper print in English as well and they have English websites. Idun - He died last year. At the top of the card it says TITRE DE SEJOUR yet further down it says CARTE DE SEJOUR CITOYEN UE/EEE/SUISSE the photo is one of these digital ones, it's just sentimental really I guess. I keep all my mum and dads passports as well because it shows the fantastic places they visited in their life and it may sound crazy but I aspire to visiting the same places at some time or another on the basis that my dad was a keen photographer and it would be interesting to see how much they have changed. As a side issue the UK seems to be in effect a mirror of what's on the French and German government websites as in dates and costs of residency card after Brexit. I seem to remember reading that whatever the UK does to EU immigrants the EU will mirror. That said some UK minister (security minister Brandon Lewis) who has said that after the 30th June 2021 if an EU citizen does not have a residency card they will be rounded up and thrown out. This has been taken up by the EU parliament who are asking for the UK to explain. Given that the EU countries follow the UK I would suggest it would be very wise to process your application with all due speed so as to give yourself plenty of time to get your replacement card if you already have one. It is a newspaper story you should follow over the coming weeks. 15. My father is now dead. I keep his CDS because it has the last photo of him even if it is crap. His CDS is exactly the same and the many others here who got theirs at the same time.
  16. Trouble is you never know with these people and already, allegedly, they have referred to the possibility of there being another Lockerbie even referring to it's flight number (290). We trust that our security is tight and that nothing can happen but we are dealing with a totally different mentality here.
  17. If you look back through this thread it was you who said it would be a totally different card. You can also see that I asked Woolly what was on his card then explained that because it has UE/EAA/Suisse it will have to be replaced because that wording has to be changed to British (or French translation). That's the only reason you will need a new card if you read the French government websites. The RIFT only gives the most up to date versions via it's links to French government websites but in itself is not up to date and is only interested in there being no agreement. The link I gave tells you what is required for either scenario and was updated in accordance with the contents of the negotiated agreement now before UK parliament and will become passed in the UK by the end of next week as of 19th Oct 2019. I take it you have actually read the link you gave and the link I gave. I believe somebody else pointed out that with regards to France the only totally reliable source are French government websites and anything other should be ignored. It's the same in Germany except there are no non government websites.
  18. Given recent events in the middle east how do people feel about flying? I have a few business trips coming up this year that involves flying and I am a little concerned for my safety.
  19. I looked at your link and it is somewhat out of date in as much as it only deals with what many incorrectly refer to as a no deal Brexit. It also has so many disclaimers at the bottom that basically other than the links to French government websites it should be treated with extreme scepticism. The Brexit agreement (or as you call it deal) will be sent to the Lords on Thursday where it is expected to go through although it does not matter if it does or doesn't. The bottom line is it will be passed into law because even if every MP other than the Tories votes against it with Boris's majority it will pass. The only people left who may vote against the agreement is the EU democratically elected MEP's but that's highly unlikely. By the way there is nothing that says what this alleged totally different card will look like for British people so I am still waiting for your link to that information.
  20. For those that are interested. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-50986393 You can watch UK Parliament on the Internet. I think the second four our debate on Tuesday is the bit that will interest you retirees the most. Mind you what governments say on one had is often quite different to what they actually do. Anyway if your interested in Brexit and what to come this will be a bumper week for you by the look of the agenda.
  21. Lucky I have yet to throw my dads card away. Apart from the bit already mentioned about place of origin there is absolutely nothing on the card that says European Union in any way form or means and his is dated March 2018. What was before that I have no clue as to what it might say. Do not confuse the residency card with a EU Blue Card which is only available to those none EU immigrants moving to the EU and have jobs to go to. These are issued by the EU via the country you are working in. American workers where I am based have these as do other none EU workers. These give the holder exactly the same rights as an EU citizen. Anyway we will find out in 26 days time when the first of these "totally" different residency cards start appearing. I still put my money on them being the same but with British instead of EU/EEA or Swiss on them.
  22. Actually not because this is down to the agreement and not the Trade Deal, the two are very separate. The only way there will be a hard Brexit is if the EU parliament does not approve the agreement which is highly unlikely but then it's politicians and they are not the brightest of animals. I am intrigued to know what these alleged major differences will be, enlighten us. If they are I can see France being in the ECHR for years.
  23. and that's why it is free, just a straight swap. I just got the feeling that some think it is some fiendishly different card. Perhaps printed in white with a big union jack across it so everyone knows your British but it isn't. It will be the same old same old but with Royaume-Uni written on it.
  24. "Lower, under Nature du Titre it is Carte de séjour citoyen UE/EEE/SUISSE." And that's why you will need a new one assuming your British because after Jan 31st you will no longer be a member of "UE/EEE/SUISSE". I think, but this just my thoughts that judging by what was on the French website you will get a new card that will look exactly the same except it will say "Nature du Titre it is Carte de séjour citoyen Royaume-Uni". You will have become just like any other none EU immigrant in France. Somebody said about these cards not being proof of ID. As far as I know in all EU countries only the ID card issued to a national of that country is classed officially as an ID card. I can use my German citizen ID card (well when it turns up) to travel anywhere within the EU instead of a passport something I can't do with my residency card because it is not officially an ID document. It's the UK that drags its feet when it comes to changing nationality. Part of the process is a full criminal record check in your country of origin which can take months and months to get. Currently an EU country cannot refuse to do one if another EU country asks but this may not be the case after Brexit which is another reason I went ahead to get German citizenship.
