  1. I was talking to a american chap today on the Singapore underground. I was saying how wonderful the transport system was there and he responded by saying how it showed that a benevolent dictator can do such good. Must say I had to respond with the fact that I didn't feel that Trump was in that category. He sort of grinned.

Anyway we got back to the condo where we are staying and I looked up what he was talking about - the first leader there was apparently "democracies favourite dictator".

NB for ALBF we found Stoke and Perigueux a tad cold. Yesterday we had Singapore Slings in Raffles that we thought a must do. Very expensive as well. Was a little disappointed when I found out that the owners of Raffles Hotel were originally American and now multinationals. That is now a brand just to make money - a sad world really.
  2. "The fact of the matter is that an election was held in the US in November, the people voted, and Mr T was democratically elected. "

Isn't democracy strange. Brexit referendum (which was advisory) result: marginally more % of people voted for leave and the people have spoken.

US election: Marginally? more people voted for Clinton but Trump won. So the people have spoken.

An awful lot of rubbish is spoken in the name of so-called democracy.
  3. ALBF: As someone who has a house within the city boundary (just) of Stoke on Trent and also one in Dordogneshire I agree that these lists are somewhat arbitrary.

Most cities do have nice areas as well as bad - the choice depends on a multitude of factors.

I don't think that we will move to France permanently. SOT is equidistant from Manchester and Birmingham and there is the Staffordshire Moorlands close by. Its not all terrible apart from the politics!

In Dordogneshire we are about 20/30 mins from Perigueux but the hamlet area is rather dead in winter.

We do home exchange quite a bit and we have had exchanges for both houses.
  4. Sorry, didn't realise you have to select the actual us politician if you go direct to wiki. That takes some doing!

If you google Tom Price then the right person comes up straight away.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Price_(U.S._politician)

Perhaps cutting and pasting is not too strenuous.

You are so clever knowing how to do links. With your comment could you supply a link to show how to make a link, rather than to the rather biased fox news.
  5. Ebaynut: go and look up Tom Price on wiki.

There are references there and I'm sure that he would have disowned them if they were untrue.

NB Its at the end of the early life education and medical career section. It would appear that he is more interested in money than applying the hippocratic oath. What an absolute ****.

What is your comment about that?
  6. I gather that you are anti-Trump then, Idun.

Without denigrating your forcefully put point I would like to point out that there are a lot more issues that can be brought up.

I read somewhere that one of his appointees to health is a member of a group against "social medicine" and any government intervention in health services. Now that really is sick.

  7. Interesting points of view and bringing out the multi-faceted nature of weather in France.

Personally the overriding requirement for me in winter is being dry rather than wet. Its beautiful when there is a hoar frost in the morning- as long as you are looking through the window or are well wrapped up outside!

An older local in our hamlet used to spend her summers in her house in the hamlet and in the winter moved into an apartment in Perigueux.

  8. Currently I am in an area in the UK near a football league teams ground that had its game postponed due to snow. However the local premiership team has just slammed a team away in the NE of England.

Our French house, 25 minutes from Perigueux.can be as " snug as a bug in a rug" if necessary.

Please don't paint everything in France as being awful.

Taking the advice of other people on this forum then everybody can be " snug as a bug in a rug" in France.

    .

  9. I'm sure you think your retort was very clever Chancer.

However, the fact remains that the first two pages were ok and the last 4 pages (those in 2017) are, except for a couple of useful posts (exclude me!) adding zilch to the thread.
  10. Chancer it is indeed my opinion.

Please read my post on this thread yesterday. That is what I think that the mods should take a careful look at.

Todays post by myself merely highlights that this thread is a very good example of how the forum has degenerated and needs to be put back on track (in my opinion).
  11. Idun

Re-reading this thread and I think that any reasonable person would say the postings until 2014 were very appropriate. A person asked a question that they knew little about and it was answered. The thread then went on to sensibly discuss similar matters around the topic and came to a natural end in 2014.

It is only the posts in 2017 that have been ridiculous and totally inappropriate.

I hope that the mods take notice.

  12. Can the mods please consider dreaming up topics for a*s hol*s, etc to vent their feelings rather than mess up possibly useful threads.

Another for "chatting" would be rather useful as well.

General discussion/others does not appear to fulfill the requirements. PMs don't seem to work either -most annoying when individual messages about pms are posted on threads.

With appropriate topics then the mods can perhaps moderate more effectively and direct posters to appropriate topics/threads.
