  1. We have a constant problem with deer here in the UK we are in the middle of the countryside and have woodland surrounding the garden.  We have found that if we protect shrubs for a couple of years until they are big enough to cope with the odd crop they will be okay.  We now have a beautiful Ragged Robin which is cropped at the bottom every winter and spring but is large enough to cope.  Deer do not touch Buddlia,  Hydrangeas or Choisya. We grow most shrubs and now all survive.  We have three ceaonothus which we started in large pots, deer still tried to eat them, put them in the ground surrounded by fencing, fencing now removed and the plants are huge.  They love roses and all our roses are behind fencing.  So we enjoy them, mum, babies plus odd stag but have still managed to have a large beautiful garden.  I have to tell you however there have been many times when I have sworn at the damage caused but have over time learnt to live with them in relevant harmony. It is a wonderful sight to see them lying down on one of our banks apparently resting but always on their guard.  They do not seem to have much fear of humans and it is usually necessary to run at them to make them move.

Best of luck with your new garden.

  2. Received yesterday in the UK for department 17 payable 15th December the same as last year.  I have a question which somebody maybe able to help me with.  When we bought the apartment we chose not to buy the garage but we do have our own parking space.  We did inform the department that the original owner had retained the garage and we had just purchased the flat.  However I have noticed that we get charged for garage/parking, are parking spaces taxed or are they still charging us for the garage?  Replies gratefully received.

  3. I lived abroad for twelve years, in the US and Switzerland, now back in Uk but have a second home in 17.  I learnt over the years the experience is what you make of it.  You will have frustrations, but the joy is the learning and then being able to say I did it. I had many friends with the same attitude, but others sadly couldn't or wouldn't adapt expecting everything to drop in  their laps.  I say go for it, on a whole you will find people helpful.  Even when we bought our place in 17, shopkeepers and the like seem to have gone out of their way to be helpful and extremely friendly.
  4. Have  a Panasonic sky  box, problem is that although we have gone through all the usual procedures such as turning off and resetting, when it is switched back on the search for listings banner just stays there and apparently cannot find the listings, applies to all sections.  If we punch in a channel number we have no problem in getting a picture.  Does this mean the box is on the blink. Programme planner does come up. Any suggestions gratefully received

  5. Our tax fonciere is more than d'habitation, I am sure somebody on this Forum, who lives in France permanently will be able to give you an explanation. We also received this year a form which had to be filled in regarding TV licence (this was sent to our UK address). I have read in other parts of the forum other people who appear not to have received this piece of paper.

I originally posted this thread and am pleased to report that tax d'habitation was received on Saturday, to be paid by 15th December, which was different from last year!
