I was reading an article in the New Yorker about the hygeine hypothesis.  It might well turn out to be bad science but it is intersting:

There's a fair bit of quasi-science in there, but it is becoming clear that allowing children's immune systems to develop in too clean an envirnment is not good for them.  The hyper-careful supermum who makes sure all things are as clean as possible in probably doing her youngsters no good at all.  It's not as if we have cholera etc floating about (if there were, then scrupulous hygiene becomes essential).
Please tell me, while you are at it, just what is wrong with a bar of soap (apart from the fact that it costs far less and lasts ten times as long?)
Because in the words of some comedy sketch or other:

"Oh that's my towel"

"We can share can't we"

"No it's not hygenic"

"But we share the soap"

"That's OK"

"What do you think the last thing is that I cleaned with the soap before you washed your face?"

I know this is banal and completely unimportant but I just don't get it...

If you don't know the product or haven't seen the add - here it is : http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/dettol-no-touch-hand-wash-system-green-tea-and-ginger_1_160580.html

Now then - can anyone explain WHY an automatic hand gel dispenser is more hygenic than a manual pump one?

Push the pump - gel comes out - wash hands = hands clean.

Just humour me - it drives me mad when I see / hear the ad.

Simon :-)

It's all utter nonsense but they've got a product to sell and a gullible public to sell it to.

One of my mothers carers sometimes has occasion to phone, she always says 'Sorry to distub'  which I thought was quite sweet and  I kind of put down to English not being her first language, however today I heard someone on the BBC say the same thing.

Shouldn't it be 'Sorry to disturb you/one/him/ her ?'

Is it me ? [6]

It's a transitive verb so you are correct, it must act on an object.

5. Jo,

We do our black lab's every week or so because he is only ever in the woods or on grass. It took a long time to be brave enough with the clippers to take enough off; I have overdone it once or twice! Now he's used to it and just lies there and lets me get on with it but I can see how fighting against a reluctant patient could be stressful.
6. Probably not too important as long as what you buy is of good quality. For each couple that prefer a double will be another couple who don't! When you consider all the criteria for choosing a holiday - location, weather, cost etc - I'm not convinced this would be a deal-breaker.
7. Firstly, the third should not be treated any differently because of its past. It will sense your sympathy which, to a dog, is weakness. To a dog no other member of the pack is equal but I bet the third dog places itself high in the order and maintains this by the learned behaviour of shaking. Let it shake, don't recognise this or alter your expectations of the dog. Never respond to the timidity with affection - ignore it and give attention only when the dog is quiet and settled

Who is top dog and who is no 2? The dogs themselves must be 3, 4 and 5! No dog is too old to ''learn''. In fact they react rather than learn. For the bed thing - you are allowing the animals equality! Why are they even in the room? A dominated dog will sleep where it's told (and can sleep on the bed) - in the pack it must find a place not occupied by the top dog.

As with all dog training matters, the key is for the dog(s) to see the human as the alpha dog. You go through doors first, you eat first, the dog gets out of your way etc. Particularly the dog mustn't take its food until you give it permission (control the feeding urge and you're nearly there). All this conditions the dog to doing what No 1 demands.

To get in the basket you need to firmly tell the dog ''basket'' and then move it there but without further expression. You've said ''basket'' - end of. If the dog resist then you must dominate it - not rough but firm and brooking no objection.

Age, breed and temperament are really not relevant to simple pack leader issues.

Look at the way a shepherd leads his dogs. Work them hard, keep them alert, affection only when job done. Same principles with a house-dog.

And the dogs will be happier knowing their place!
8. Sweet 17. There will be a speed control somewhere on the handle (it will likely have a symbol of a hare and a tortoise). Slowing the engine will also slow the speed of the mower over the ground, the blades will slow proportionately.

Hard to believe he wants the mower to go slower!
9. Some people think the pound is cheap so they buy it. Some think it expensive so they sell it. At any one time there are traders who believe the pound will rise and those who believe it will fall. The value rises and fall as the balance between these 2 views is adjusted. Taking the opinions of the ''market experts'' has the same accuracy level as tossing a coin.

Rising interest rates tend to strengthen a currency whereas rising inflation weakens it. So there is still a balance.

It is what it is and we can't do a thing about it!
10. nemltd,

If you were doing 130kph and the bike 190 the closing speed is 60kph. To close one kilometer would take one minute. To close 200 metres would take 12 seconds. That's a long time in your mirrors!

The great thing about the autobahns is that people actually DO expect something coming up behind and look properly.
