1.
WE need equality in these matters so lets tax second homes in the UK. If taxing second homes in Fance keeps prices down ,albeit some Brits. will sell up, then I applaud the new tax
An excellent idea! Having seen the damage to local rural communities by second homeowners who are rarely at their properties  I would welcome a UK tax on second homes provided of that it applied to all second home owners. When many people are struggling to buy one home here, a second home can only be regarded as a luxury and so is fair game for the taxman. Of course I would like to live in a world with high standards of public services and low taxation but that just isn't possible.

At least him and DSK will get a fair trial in USA.

Not like Julian Assange in Sweden.[:'(]
As someone who lived for over 10 years in Sweden I can assure you that JA will get a fair trial in  Sweden.
Looks like Sri Lanka managed to snatch defeat out of the jaws of a certain draw
Nonsense, England bowled and fielded magnificently, Sri Lanka batted badly and crumpled under the pressure
That was my point exactly or didn't you get it???
Certainly didn't, not like what you wrote it.( credit to Eric & Ernie) Maybe you should have tried England snatched a magnificent win out of the jaws of a certain draw? [:P]
Well  perhaps you shouldn't be so sensitive.[:D] I was actually taking that tone from the comments of the TMS team on BBC wo considered it was more Sri Lanka that lost it (in all senses)
I wasn't being sensitive at all, or aren't English people allowed to be proud of their cricket team? After all why  be negative?
A great imitation then[:D] Lighten up. I did think it was a great English performance but in common with Geoff Boycott and other members of the TMS team felt that Sri Lanka did throw the game away but full credit to Engand for taking full advantage.

  6.
In my opinion it is hard to argue that a majority verdict, used in some jurisdictions where the "SUBJECTS" basic rights have been eroded as in England, fulfills the principle of beyond reasonable doubt.

In order to avoid being accused of "rubbishing" the Jury System in a French Cour d'Assises, I shall refrain from outlining the basic parameters of such a Criminal Procedure in France.
While I agree that it is better if the jury bring in a unanamious verdict I feel that 1 dissenting juror should not be sufficient to bring in a Not Guilty verdict. This makes it too easy for a gang member to be acquitted by leaning on a jury member. How many of us would be strong enough to ignore threats to our family members. A better solution might be to order a retrial in this event or to allow a majority verdict at the discretion of the judge.

  7.
Of course I understood really, Rabbie![:)]   I just find this whole idea of speeding being somehow an "accident" quite funny, to be honest.  Unintentionally maybe, but by accident?  Personally, I think it's quite easy to get a feel for what speed you are going, especially in a familiar car, from the way it pulls and the engine note.  However, if I were ever to get done for this particular crime, I might tell everybody I committed it by accident too.[:D]
The wonderful flexibility of the English language. Some of us use Unintentionally and Accidently as synoyms in our sloppy way.[:)]
  8. Quillan, I agree with much of what you say but I must disagree with part of what you say about human rights. If a person is wrongly convicted and sent to prison is it really reasonable for them to repent  and to apologise for something they didn't do. It seems that they would in fact suffer a double injustice under your proposals. Until we can guarantee that there will be no wrongful convictions I fear we must put your idea on hold.  Some people might feel this is a risk worth taking but personally  would rather suffer a robbery than be wrongfully imprisoned for a crme I didn't commit with a future loss of my civil rights

What is "speeding accidentally" when it is at home?
It is quite easy to find you are  driving a little over the speed limit in a modern car if you are not using cruise control
What cruise control?  We don't all have expensive cars - most of us have SPEEDOMETERS!  Speeding, maybe but accidentally?  It's not that I don't do it, it's just that saying it's accidental is just plain daft and a pretty feeble excuse.  I bet the gendarmes don't accept it as an excuse when they catch you at it, nor the speed cameras. Blimey, whatever will people think of next?
I don't have an expensive car unless you count £1,250 as expensive. I prefer to keep my eyes on the road and traffic rather than obsessively stare at the speedo. My point was, as I am sure you understood, that speed can creep up quite easily. I never said it  was a valid excuse. In my mind there is a difference between this and deliberately setting out to ignore the speed limits.

I have heard it said by older people that when there was still capitol punishment in the UK then there were less murders.

I see and hear of terrible crimes these days, and yet there seems no punishment to fit the crime. I have nothing against people being rehabilitated, BUT, they should have some sort of punishment first. What this should be, I don't really know. Cleverer minds than mine could surely think of something.
Not actually true. The murder rate remained constant after the abolishment of Capital punishment. There has been a rise but only in the context of the increase of violent crimes in general. The only real deterrent is the certainty of being caught and convicted. Unfortunately too many get away without being caught.

to learn the difference between the English and Union flags?

    John
The flag is correct. It's the abbreviation of the country that is wrong. It's the United Kingdom that's an EU member not England[:)]
Sorry about the thread drift but a serious question on this (tangental) topic - are the Channel Islands not part of the UK but not the EU though?  Or am I wrong about the former?
Coops, according to my informants at Wikipedia, the isle of Man and the Channel Islands are crown dependencies and not part of the UK. So they laid her down on a cold place and her mummy held her and the nasty vet gave her a jab and she watched her mummy all the time, trusting, begging silently, wondering why her mummy was crying. And then slowly it all slowed down and went dark and she went away.

    And she is mourned.
It is always hard to have to put down a much loved pet but it is a humane way to end incurable suffering. I feel you are being somewhat harsh by describing the vet as nasty. Most vets and certainly any vet that I would consider using care deeply about animals and wouldn't do it unless they felt it was in the interests of the animal.

Remember it is in the the financial interest of the vet to keep the animal alive for as long as possible

I think the whole thing is barbaric and takes the law down to the level of the criminal.
I suspect that you are granting a level of decency to people who neither understand nor even aspire to it. Such punishments are easy for the criminal to understand, easy to administer and cheap - a win, win, win surely? And I favour hanging, flogging, the stocks and transportation (at least until Scotland and Wales are full) but not necessarily all for the same offence.

Perhaps we should agree to disagree?

    John
I think you will findthat Scotland and Wales have already been exporting their undesirables eg G Brown and N Kinnock  [:D]

Butter that is the answer to that. Get your arteries clogged up folks, live a good and hearty life full of pleasure and then go out with a heart attack.

We all have to go some time. It is the when etc that bothers me and the quality of life at the end of my days. Personally I would rather go sooner and have lived life as I loved it, rather than being careful trying to keep fit and eat awful 'healthy' foof and end up being in a home.

In these homes, well, from what I have heard in France or the UK, people are on minimum wage and have hard jobs, that sometimes they don't like or want and that the owners make the money. Not for me, not for me at all.

    Sorry Wooly, I digress, you are saying that the elderly are the new victims. Feels like we should all plan what we want our own futures to be, if we don't, then yes, probably will end up being victims;
Don't drink, don't smoke - you may not live longer but it will certainly seem like it[:D]
  16. No country has the perfect legal system. Too many wrong convictions occur and too many guilty people get away with it. In my opinion the scottish system which allows three verdicts - Guilty, Not Guilty and Not Proven comes nearest to clearing an innocent person's name. After all in England and USA a Not Guilty verdict just means that the guilt has not been proved beyond reasonable doubt. The biggest failing in many countries is in the treatment of people before trial - the remand system in many countries leaves much to be desired and far too long can elapse between arrest and trial.

  17.
I find your odious comparisons between the respective systems of justice ridiculous and I can only state categorically that I PERSONALLY would very much prefer to be subjected to a criminal trial in the United States of America than in the French Republic.
really! Read how they treat prisoners on remand in parts of the USA. These are people who have not been convicted. http://www.guardian.co.uk/tv-and-radio/2011/may/22/louis-theroux-miami-mega-jail
