1.
Actually I DID NOT fall for this scam. It was pretty obvious from the the message and name of sender. I just wanted to see what ridiculous proposal I got so I could warn other people. Maybe with sarcastic replies like these then I won't bother next time! I've got better things to do with my time than to belittle others.
Unfortunately some people can never miss a chance to show off their (imagined?) cleverness.  I thought it was obvious that you were just playing with the scammer. It seemed to me to be unlikely that anyone would admit to being fooled on a forum such as this.[:)]
  2. Audio and Patf are totally correct as regards the situation in England where you have a duty to keep your animals in regardless of the actual ownership of the fence. As this is IMO the commonsense answer I am not sure if it applies in France [:)]
  3.
Laugh all you want, guys, but, you know what, having a dry moat (no rain for months) PLUS boundary walls that don't keep out the hordes add up to a less than happy existence......[;-)]
We bow to your chateau expertise[:D]
  4. Idun, I know that. I do my bit as well. I was merely quoting from the official reason for Brucie's knighthood. I agree with you that it is the who that is important. It seems this year they have given quite a lot of honours to 'ordinary' people who have done a lot for their community.

I always feel that giving honours to sports people just becaue they have won olympic medals is a bit daft. The Olympic Medal should be its own reward.

  5. Maybe he does have the right to go through the windscreen and kill himself but does he have the right to go through the windscreen, be seriously injured and have the Health Service treat him at public expense? I think that we have a right to expect people to take reasonable precautions to avoid serious injury

Truth is I don't care. I'm not sure if doing a job, entertainment  or sport that one loves deserves such an honour. Not just for Brucie but for anyone.
I take your point in general but Brucie's knighthood is partially for his contributions to Charity.

For a woman, it's bad enough to be lumbered (usually) with the name of her father, only to be changed for the name of her husband. It is possible to acquire our own name (in the UK it is possible at least, where name changes are easy, by deed poll)  but in France, it is such a production, and most of the time, downright impossible.
As a man, I have my father's surname and have no problem with that. Perhaps woman should take their mother's surname? My wife who is Swedish uses her both her old surname and mine as a double-barrelled surname. This is common swedish practice. In England over the phone  she often just uses mine as it saves having to spell her Swedish surname.

Of course in Iceland they use the parental firstname together with son or dottir to make the surname.

  8.
.... and let's not ask about washing of hands and then returning to the meal and handling the food!![:'(]
When Winston Churchill was reprimnded by a colleague who said "At Eton we were taught to wash our hands afterwards", he replied "At Harrow we were taught not to p*** on our hands" [:D]
  9. As the third book is  a direct sequel to Book 2 it is one of those cases where the right order is almost an essential. Still, I am glad that you enjoyed them[:)].
