  1. Hot on the left seems to be the standard. However when I plumbed my house 30+ years ago there did not seem to be a standard and I put Cold on the left on the basis that most people are right handed and if you are filling a kettle or just cleaning your teeth it makes sense to have the tap on the hand you are not holding something. The new sinks I have put in I have kept cold on the left. We found it works for us. So be an individual and go against the flow.
  2. Hi I have one of these. The SD card is only for photo's and other gimicks. I had the same problem and contacted Garmin. What you need to do is to connect your USB cable and delete all the laguages and voices apart from the one you want to use. Also delete all the different silly car icons. You will then have a standard triangle to show your position. This will free up enough internal memory for your maps. By the way I would advise backing up the Garmin files on your computer before you start to delete things. But it worked for me.
  3. If it was not for the internet being so good I think I would make the same mistake. The French regulations seem to be always just slightly different than the UK. I research everything on line now before I start.
  4. Thank you all for your help. The S Trap Pan and the SAC type need checking out. I'm sure that with your good advice I now won't have to take the door off the smallest room and teach every one to whistle.
  5. The WC of the 1950’s house we have just purchased is a wonderful contraption. It has a lever on the side which when pulled opens a flap to drop the contents directly down a hole into the cesspit. The lever also operates a flush valve. Due to age or wear the cup seals in the flush valve are leaking. Is anybody out there familiar with this arrangement and do you know if spares for the valve are available. An easy solution would be to replace the loo with a modern one. However the ‘drop hole’ is in the middle of the floor and as modern loos exit from the rear we would have to put the loo too far forward and then would not be able to open the toilet door. I know that in the long term I will probably have to upgrade the cesspit in line with the new laws which will probably mean re-plumbing anyway however I am looking for a short term fix at the moment. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks
  6. Hi Does anybody know if I can hire a car in France with my old green driving licence ?
  7. Thanks for your advice. I know that there was no good technical reason why I should not use tri rated, but regulations can be perverse, Im not rich but just happen to have a load of cable which is too good to scrap & probably would not get its value if I was to try to sell it. I have a very small house so the run is not too long and should not be too much of a pain getting through the conduit. I will crimp on bootlace ferrules to make a decent connection on the ends. Again thank you all for your help.
  8. Hi I apologise if this question has been asked before. I will be running a spur from the fuse box to the kitchen of our French house. I am comfortable with the requirements for an ECB and Double pole breakers in the fuse box and running through conduit etc. I have a lot of tri rated 2.5mm flexible cable in the appropriate colours from when I used to build industrial machinery. Does anybody know if it is permissible to use this cable or do I have to use solid core cable. Many thanks for your help.
  9. Hi We are returning to France between Christmas and the new year. Are the supermarkets open over this period? Thanks in advance for your help.
  10. Thank you all for your welcome and help. Some friends found a company in L’Isle-Jourain but a twenty minute trip to our place was too far for them. There seems to be a complete lack of enterprise spirit however a bit frustrating but I suppose that is also part of the attraction. I shall take the advice and see the Mairie.
  11. Hi. I hope somebody can help us. We have just purchased a house in a small hamlet near Saint-Martin-l’Ars , Vienne. We need to pump out the fosse. Does anybody know of a company local to that area whom we can contact. Many Thanks
