  1. In Dept. 17 the French seem to have the habit of flashing their headlights to warn other drivers of the fact that the Gendarmes are operating close-by with speed checks, document checks etc. This can't be legal? But if illegal under what law? I've not been caught out, but my wife has been in a debate in the local cafĂ©. David.
  2. I'm sure someone out there will know the answer !! My wife and I moved to France in August 2004.  We have no home in the UK and the house in France is our only residenceMy wife has no employment (by choice) for the last 3 years but is well under retirement age. At the time of moving to France I was doing consultancy work in Afghanistan for a UK company.  I am now on a 30-month contract in Jordan. What are my tax and social charges liabilities in France?? In the UK provided I was outside the UK for more than 183 days per year then I was considered to be "tax non-resident" and ended up paying nothing to the Inland Revenue. (lucky me!!) Does a similar scheme exist in France? Until I resolve this the my wife can't join the French social security scheme according to a very friendly lady at the Caisse Sociale.  I also believe I will be liable to taxes if I sell my house as it won't be considered as our main residence by the notaire. HELP
  3. We've had excellent service from CA in Lorignac, Dept 17. They set up the account in less than an hour and we only dropped in on the off-chance.  My wife and I speak little French and it is non-technical, mostly limited to shopping and restaurants The manager visited our house and set up building and contents insurance the next day, and he undercut AXA by a large amount for the same cover. Whilst at the house he even phoned EDF and the water company, got the utilities connected and set up direct debit payments for us - all over a cup of coffee !! Although that manager has moved on the new manager is just as helpful.  And so are the rest of the staff. On the basis of the service we have received from CA in Lorignac, I recommend them to all.
  4. I am a Brit but I am resident in France as from this week. However I work as a consultant and over the last 6 years I have spent an average of 46 weeks per year working and living outside the EU.  This work will hopefully continue and I will be spending a minimum of 46 weeks per yeat outside the EU. What is my income tax liability in France? In the UK I have always qualified as "Tax non-resident" and my liability has been nil.  Is it the same in France? I'll pay my share but I don'y want to pay more than necessary !!
