1. You could try the pan on something to isolate it from the hob.  Maybe an ally ring? Aluminium will block the passage of the induced magnetic field and eddy currents though so you would need to make it small.  Or have some feet to put the pan on.  You would only need it to be a couple of mm above the glass.

  2. Hi all.

I am thinking of buying a van from Germany or Belgium and registering it here.  I understand I won't have to pay TVA in the country that I buy the van from but will I have to pay any when I come to get my quitus fiscal here?

Also.  Any one have any experience of importing from Gremany, Belgium or the Netherlands?  I have been told not to get one from Germany as it is more difficult to get the paperwork to register them.  I have looked into it a bit and Germany seems the same as any other EU country except the seller has to deregister the car and get export plates.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated thanks.

  3. Thanks for the tip.

Yes Julie quite likes the Californian Rosé, not quite as nice as the Zinfandel but good enough.  I think we shall have to try the other one from Aldi next time we pass a shop, the nearest one to us is in the other town to the one we normally shop at.

To be fare John, I can see her point, it it a bit sour, even when cut with some lemonade.

  4. You would probably find it easier and a lot cheaper to buy a good used rad.  The likes of Emmaus (large charitable junk shop/brocante) in Angouleme has loads of them sitting outside, they never seem to sell so possible they are not in that much call so they would be cheap.

  5. Lidle have stopped selling Julie's favourite Californian Zinfandel by the looks of things so we are trying to find a French equivalent.  We are buying a couple of different bottles to try every time we go shopping but they end up in the sink.  Any one know of a sweet and fruity rosé similar to the white Zinfandel please?

  6. Oh I am aware it could be done but would you want to spend time and a fair chunk of money flying to the UK to look at a car that might well be a rough old lash up.  I have no problem at all with repairable cars, most of Julie's cars were bought and repaired by me.  I think it's best left there on balance.

  7. I saw it coming but I believe you need to keep an open mind if you want to get anywhere in life[;-)]  I believe if something seems too good to be true then it probably is, there is nothing to say the car isn't registered somewhere but the other scenario is much more plausible.  I emailed the seller my findings a while ago and haven't hear anything back.

The Gendarme we spoke to was great, really helpful.  We have had a good day all together, just got back from the Marie's house after repairing his wife's windscreen and having some pinot.  Top day[:D]

Are you using the bottom post button?, the top one doesn't work on my log-in since the so called experts have had a play . . .

    Might well explain it.

  9. Update.

Popped into the local Gendarmerie as I couldn't get anywhere with the details on the carte grise.  Turns out the car had been written off in 2011 and sold to a garage in Toulouse.  From there the trail goes cold unless we phone them, I'm not going to bother, the seller has a history of buying used car parts off Ebay so I think we can draw our conclusions from there.  I have no problem with damaged and repaired cars but when the seller has no paperwork and lies about it, well that's just a bit too much.  I understand the car would need all sorts of paperwork and inspections before a new carte grise could be issued, just not worth the hasstle and risk.

Thanks for every ones input, much appreciated.

Any way, I now have a copy of the carte grise, it has been crossed but I can't make out the date, there only seems to be one name and date of imatriculation on it.

    Et voila

What do you make of this?

Again, thanks for your input, most helpful.  I am happy to sort out transportation of the car by one means of another so I'm not too worried about the legality of it being moved on the plates it has now, more just that,a s said I don't get a knock at the door in two months asking for my car keys.

  11.
It is all very simple.Ask the current owner for a copy of the carte gris. Then contact the person named on the carte gris, have him/her complete the required documentation and you can then register the car in France.
This is my plan, if the catre grise ever turns up, it was supposed to be here about 4 hours ago, funnily he hasn't emailed it but he has managed to send me his bank details for the deposit.

I'm not too bothered about it not being strictly legal to get it back here, my main concern is if it really is his car to sell.

  12. Thanks for your input, when I found out the car was not registered in his name it set my spidey senses tingling a bit.  I shall investigate when I get a copy of the papar work through later tonight, hopefully.

Why register it in the UK then here?  It would be just the same as buying it here in the first place, the prefecture have no way of knowing where the transaction took place.  Regards a CT no big problem as far as I can see, just get it CT'd than apply for the change of ownership.

  13. I am sure I posted this earlier but can't find it now.  Probably floating about somewhere or stuck in the phone line.

I am buying a French registered car from Ebay in the UK.  Te seller has in his possesion a carte grise but it's not in his name, he claims he couldn't register it in his name as he lives in the UK, we have been down this road before and know this can be awkward so his story does ring true to a degree.  The seller has been on Ebay for a while and has good feedback, not one of those set up, sell a few low value items, sell a biggie then vanish.  He sounds Polish, not that it makes much difference.

I know I can get a certificat de non gage on line instantly, this will tell me if there are any fines or finance outstanding, the thing that's worrying me is what if the car isn't really his and the real owner, the one shown on the carte grise doesn't know he's selling it.  How can I find out if he really is the owner, even if he's not the registered keeper for the reasons he states?

I know I should walk away but my gut feeling on this one is good and my gut is usually right and the car is cheap but not so cheap as to make it an obvious scam.

Any advice regarding further checks etc would be appreciated.

  14. Hi, looking for some advice if any one can help.

We are trying to fill and paint our old pine (I think) solid panel doors.  Some of the panels have cracks in them and cracks round where they sit on the frame of the door its self.  Any one have any idea what we can fill them with that won't crack again as the door expands and contracts with the change in temperature and humidity?

  15. What car is it Coops, year and what engine?

Ring gear, I have never known anyone have to change one, never.

If it's a Skoda (I think you mentioned it) it will probably have a dual mass flywheel, these can be a problem on cars that have them, VAG have them.  Basically your flywheel is made in two parts then they are bonded together with a rubbery section that absorbs the vibrations from the engine giving your gear box an easier life.  Lots of people replace them with solid flywheels, we did on our Peugeot vans with no ill effects but apparently Mondeos don't like solid flywheels, I have heard of quite a few box's going so be careful.

Shame you're so far away or I'd offer my services as you helped me in the past.  I am going back to the UK in about 6 weeks and could get one to bring back though.

  16. Don't know about the regs regarding fitting sockets on their own breaker but I do know for sure you can use 1.5 for sockets.  An electrician friend and I were busy telling a woman in a pub that she should get her electrician to remove the 1.5mm and install 2.5 for a main, I am no electrician but even I know you should use 2.5mm for sockets.  Or so I thought.  My friend checked his French regs and apparently it can be used in some cases, not sure on the regs but we both had egg on our faces.  This was only a couple of months ago.

  17. The original plan was to burn them but the colour, oh the colour!  They are a beautiful rich dark oak with stunning grain pattern.  I did look at some "seasoned" oak but it's way lighter than what I have.  I know they are going to be a bit of fuss and may not even be much cheaper than buying new but the 150 year old colour just can't be bought.

I have burned some of the ends I cut off, they weren't rotten at all being the ends that sat in the I beams.  They were really hard to get burning, it was a bit of a joke that we would put one on the fire if we wanted to put the fire out.
