  1. There you go then. Just as I thought, nothing to worry about on entering France...just going back to the UK. Also, yes, that's correct about renewing the rabies jab annually here in France. Mother's guide dog has her's done annually and our French vet sends out the reminder.

Good luck with your move. Whereabouts in the Dordogne are you moving to? Always short on Scots around us....plenty of English though!

  2. Hi Megan

It's a few years now since we brought our pets (then 3 dogs and 1 cat) from Scotland (and I remember well being really worried about it all), via Portsmouth on the ferry to St Malo, to the Dordogne and nobody so much as glimpsed at our paperwork then. We only had export licenses for all but 1 dog, which was my Mum's guide dog. We had no intention of taking any of our pets back to the UK so only bothered to obtain export licenses for them. Our 19 yr old Scottish cat enjoys her life here in France and is really still well in life!

However, I can tell you that my Mum has since gone back and forth numerous times to Scotland with her guide dog, who has a Pet Passport, always by air, and never, ever, has anyone on the French side ever looked at the dog's paperwork.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it.....but then that's easily said, I know.

Come on you folk on this Forum, has anyone any experience of having your pet's paperwork (Pet Passport or otherwise) looked at when entering France?

  3. Hi

Just adore Cockers so couldn't resist posting this photo of our departed Blue Roan! Don't know whereabouts you're originally from Scotslassie but we bought our Cocker from the breeder, Patricia Shaw from Barry, near Dundee in 1989. We had him for 14 years, latterly in France. We called him Sweep (as in Sootie and Sweep!) and he was a real rascally character although his mother was "Lochdene White Dove"...Crufts Winner. We kept reminding him of that fact...to no avail!!

We've not seen many Cockers in our part of the Dordogne. We're near Riberac. Seen 1 Blue Roan and just a few tan coloured.

  4. Thanks all. That's what's sooo good about this Forum. No-one is alone here. The support we all get from each other is just second to none!

Yes, Christine, thanks, Roqui is lucky but not nearly as lucky as us to have such a splendid big black beauty!

He's totally tired out and is sound asleep at the moment as we went for a walk in the woods earlier with our neighbours with their rescued (from a French friend of theirs) 7 month old Berger Belge pedigree pooch. They are the best of friends and have a great time running free together. She gets very frustrated as she can't run as fast as Roqui and yelps at him in a very high pitched bark. However, she has more stamina than him so he gets tired more quickly than her so they compliment each other very well. Then back to ours for an aperitiff. Very sociable for all concerned!!!

Thanks, also to Magnolia for your comments....yes..for goodness sake don't tell a Scotsman that he's not a bad chap!!!! Ha ha!!!

  5. Hi All

Just a Roqui update. He turned 1 yr old just recently and we think he's grown a bit more since we got him. He's come on great and has now gained lots of confidence. He's still very wary of strangers, especially men, but is now fine with all our friends (and their dogs!) and he and my OH are now inseparable. The other little issue we had to cope with was that he wasn't good at coming back to us when off the lead outside. However, he now comes when he hears the whistle being blown, to receive his reward of a little cheese! So lots of progress for this big black handsome boy! We're very proud of him and love him to bits. I had never even heard of Podencos or Galgos before! They are certainly very intellegent, gentle and loving.

Here are some recent photos of Roqui, sporting the finally, totally finished, dog coat! I popped into the local Red Cross shop the other day and I've to call back next week to collect some old anoraks, which they are going to look out for me. I also bought a bundle of 5 gents' ties for 1€ to make the ties for the coats, which will be easier than sewing ties.

    Happy Easter everyone!

  6. I think this sounds like a nice idea.

I for one would be interested in some old Brit sit com DVDs as hubby likes to have a lie in on a Sunday (every morning if he could get away with it!!) and watch old DVDs.

Perhaps we could list what we have for sale and then, if anyone is interested, we could get intouch by PM to find out the cost (including P&P) and take it from there. Not bidding as such as that would probably be too complicated. Also, if it was just a list of items from private members, would have thought that should be ok as far as keeping within the Forum rules.

Perhaps a Mod. would be good enough to advise.

  7. Re taking dogs into banks, I was in our small local branch of Credit Agricole a few weeks ago when an English lady (who has been living in France for years, is married to a Frenchman and of course speaks fluent French) came in with her dog on a lead. I spoke to her and patted her dog. Nobody else took any notice so probably best to just try it yourself (rather than ask first, as they may then say no!) and see what happens! I've certainly not seen any signs on the doors of banks indicating that dogs (guide dogs excepted) aren't allowed.
  8. Hi Gluestick

There's never a good time to loose a pet but this is really sad.

Hope your friends get fixed up soon with a another (was going to say "replacement" but there is never an actual replacement) pet soon and it's just amazing, as I know from experience, how quickly you become occupied with your new pet and so the pain (but never the memory) eases.

Your friend is lucky to have such a caring friend.

    Best wishes to you all.

  9. At the very least, it makes you want to cry. Then you ask the question "How can such neglect be allowed to happen in this day and age?" It is so sad.

Good luck with bringing this case to light and I truly hope you have success in helping this poor pony....even if it can't be saved, you will know that you have helped it out of it's obvious misery.

  10. Oh Nicky

    How could you resist????

Seriously, these dogs have such a good temperament and just so want to please that they make fantastic pets. So playful yet so gentle with everyone and so intellegent that they are very easy to train.

Go on, you won't regret choosing one of these pups who are just desperately looking for their loving forever home.

    Best wishes

    Anna

  11. Hi Lisa and Magnolia

Well, another Saturday night and...what are we doing....yes, sitting at our PCs...sad or what!!

Yes, I think putting up some posters in the supermarkets would be a good idea. Worth a try, you just never know, after all, Hobo just needs one family to want him! I'll put some up too this coming week.

Same with Joy, maybe worth a try, Mags?

Enjoy your weekend too....meant to rain next week! Can't complain though as this has been a great spell of weather.

  12. Oh, he looks even more adorable, doesn't he?

Lisa, I handed out the flyers at our darts match, although, unfortunately, there weren't many folk there. However, one very small glimmer of hope is that one chap said that he has friends coming over to France next month who have lost a dog and may (just may)  be looking for another. He took one of my flyers and promised that he would talk to his friends about Hobo and he also promised to e-mail me to let me know the outcome (either way). So when I hear anything, I'll let you know.

It's a long shot, but you never know.

I keep telling my OH that Roqui could do with a pal! He (Roqui, that is!) does have my Mum's Golden Retriever here but she's 8 now and not really that interested in playing his rough and tumble games! However, for the present, unfortunately (and to my annoyance), my OH isn't budging.

  13. Hi Lisa

Thanks for the info. I'm feeling fine again now, thanks. I've made up a flyer with some details and a photo of Hobo so have printed some off just now and will take them with me to hand out at our away darts match tonight. So, you never know, someone may, or know of someone who might, want a dog.

I've pestered my OH as much as I dare but he is adamant that we have all the pets we can handle......I'll still harp on at every opportunity though!

Lets hope we can find Hobo a nice home (before I have a divorce on my hands...ha ha!)

Anna (who wishes she could take all these lovely dogs she sees on this Forum!!)

  14. But then if you're resident in the Uk and receive said heating allowance, nothing to stop you jetting off to some warmer clim for the Winter months....you would still get your heating allowance. It's not means tested so it's only right really that every State pensioner should receive it. Nothing to argue about really.....
