  1. I am a B&B owner and the thought of providing a coin cuisine fills me with horror! memories of back-packing in oz, the smell of the communal fridge still haunts me........ although in fact ,we do provide a fridge for guests use and they are free to picnic in the garden or on the covered terrrace. A B&B/ chambres d'hotes does what it says on the tin ,if you want more self catering, rent a gite.

BTW I do regularly check the fridge and clean it!

  2. Yes, I must admit  we don't have breakfast with them if it's really late!

We usually organise the table D'hotes by not having the starter so we have time to cook the mains. This is also a bit of entertainment for the guests as we have a kitchen/dinning room. We were worried about this at first ,but they do appreciate seeing their food cooked and it makes them feel more at home.Although, one has to learn to curb one's language !

  3. sound llike weevil larvae. They eat the roots and you dont usually find out until the plant comes away and there's nothing below the soil. Check out your other pots to make sure there's  no others
  4. There's a lot of scare_mongering going on here . I'd like to know how often all these events have occoured. We live in a very lively hunting area and I can't remember the last time any hunters went out shooting at night. During the day they keep well away from properties. We all love our pets ,but to keep them confined when they are used to being free is cruel and doing it for our own peace of mind. The nature of a cat ,unfortunately means that one day they will just dissappear and you'll wonder what happened to them, but to keep them caged up because you can't bear this feeling is for you ,not for the cat.
  5. We have 3 who have spent every night outside for 6 years and catch a myriad of vermine during our slumbers . I don't think there's anything around that would even tackle a cat ,unless perhaps you have wolves in your neck of the woods!

Just this morning ,sad to say,I found a freshly killed weasel on the lawn, and they're pretty aggressive predators.

  6. Well done Q! That is an incredible amount of work. This was our first full year with GdF, we're Ch D'h and it's been our best yet with only 2 Brit couples for the whole season. All the rest were french with a sprinkling of Belge and germans. We were winding down for Sept ,but as the weather is continuing to be pleasant the last minuters are booking. Table d'hote has also taken off this year and we had a bit of a celebration when we'd reached the 100th meal! nothing like yours, but we're v happy.
  7. The gist of the article is that 1 or 2 epis is seen as undesirable amongst owners and possibly guests as well .This means that 3 epis is seen as "medium" when it is actually more than that. I don't know how or if it will go through, but I know if they introduce 5 epis I will be dissappointed to remain as a 3 . It would be better to re-jig the exsisting classement and make 1 epi  mean something.

Knowing GdF there will be a discussion on the subjct for a while so you're probably right to seek out the grille ,sorry I havn't got one.

  8. Had a monsieur who informed us at booking he was strictly ,completement salt-free, so to be on the safe side I cooked his meals separately, veg not a problem as I don't usually add any,but bread ,main meal etc was a bit of a pain. Imagine my surprise when he tucked into the cheese course! he just grinned when I mentioned his problem so in the morning I didn't bother to make separate bread.

  9. I presume your biggest problem is breakfast. For gluten free guests I usually do fruit filled crèpes made with sarrasin flour and corn flour. The problem is that the "normal" guests usually  like them too. I've found gluten free bread to be pretty un- palatable.
  10. Same here Quillan, we get lots of teachers and although we don't ban children we do discourage them. We  are surrounded by lots of water and it's always a worry. The parents are on holiday and seem to abandon all responsibility sometimes. We can't take dogs because we have too many free range poules, but have sometimes allowed the odd powder puff ,which our own dogs barely notice is here, but I always put away the best bed linen on these occasions. Invaribly ,the evidence is there that the dog has been on the bed.
  11. You need to buy the "Echo du Berry" each week . This will inform you of all the organised randonées going on throughout the summer. You can chose your distance and there are plenty of refreshments provided en route. Sometimes on a popular track there will be over 100 people taking part. Its a great way of meeting folks and using tracks that one wouldn't try on one's own.The Syndicat d'Initiative at Ste Sévère  will also be very helpful.
  12. I notice Tony Scott has remade "the taking of pelham 123" I really can't imagine he could improve on the original with the incomparable Walter Matthau. It's one of my favourites of all time and also  where Quentin Tarantino got some ideas!
  13. This time of year it's the local ,big trad music festival and we always have musicians staying who feel the need to practise.

I'm always happy to hear the accordeon and the cornemeuse( small pipes) but always breathe a sigh of relief when no one turns up with a veielle ( hurdy gurdy ). Usually the non playing guests are here for the festival and appreciate the free shows!
