  1. Thanks for all the suggestions. I have the brico depot catalogue and will use the 15cm wide parpaings if I have to at around 85 cents each but what I really want are something like these

  2. Not parpaings but the blocks that are about the same size, but narrower and solid , are they widely available in France as I can't seem to find any? Though if I knew what they were called it might help, I have been asking for brique beton and I am always directed to the breezeblocks.
  3. At the age of 50 even with dual nationality, finding even temporary work could be very difficult ( and for you a lot lot harder) and depending on how long he works and on what rate of pay ( probably the SMIC) that will determine how long he can claim Allocation d'Aide au Retour à l'Emploi for and what rate. But I think you can put any thoughts of getting 3 years and 1000 euros a month out of your head. What business line if he in ?

Work may be hard to find in your "desert homeland" but probably a lot easier than here.

Claire posted as I was writing:)
  4. I see that Philip Green's businesses are going to be taking advantage of free labour on the Tory work for nothing or lose your benefit scheme. It just sickens me that a comapny that has apparently wriggled out of paying tax but it's ok because it's "legal' is now going to avoid paying people any kind of wage. He gets free labour and what does the government get? a nice donation perhaps? It would be one thing if the companies having this slave labour were struggling individual little businesses that could do with a bit of help, but not multi national businesses with fat profits.
  5. Yet I as a British person cannot just up sticks and move there. Accoording to their website, it is possible to get a work permit if you have a job to go to, but they are fixed term contracts. Further settlers not welcome? That is one way of keeping the population British I suppose and that ties in nicely with the UK government supported idea that the (only British) population of the islands can decide their own nationality!

Whoever has rights to it, I would hate to see another drop of blood spilt so that Islanders can keep the queens head on their currency.
  6. I saw the program advertised as a feature on the daily mail with many French residents writing in to state and concurring with each other as to how bad shops and restaurants ( not Michelin starred ones) are in France. Sadly they got a hammering from those who knew better- holidaymakers!
  7. Mrs G supported the local market traders last week, she's not usually able to do so as I have the car. We live in a agricultural community and often buy veg at a farm shop, so expected the market to be more of the same. But the carrots came from Spain. So we tried to support local traders, but they don't support local farmers.

I will buy local if it is good quality and well priced, but like Dave we have no hesitation in shopping online for the best deals.

  8. She is reaching a younger generation thanks to her something's got a hold on me being used on Flo Rida's Good feeling. It is played a lot in our house and I can tolerate it.
