  1. I also need to get a woodburner. Not one in at the moment but do have a chimney. Do most people buy them in the UK and just drive them over to France? Do the local installers get upset if you don't buy through them and they only get to install? I don't want to do the install myself in case of house insurance issues. What's most peoples common practise on this?
  2. Thanks Will

This system will take some getting used to. So if I understand this correctly you don't have to pay tax on a joint income up to your married personal allowance of 19,712 then whatever is left is divided by 2 (husband and wife) and then calculated using the band system. In which case each individual doesn't have to pay tax on the next 5875.00 either. That sounds like I've got it wrong?

Parsnips - I found these and I'm assuming these are the allowances. Any idea what the tax rate is for a married couple above that figure or are these not the allowance you have?

Just out of interest how can you have 2.5 people? Kids?

  4. Thanks Parsnips (You're so good at this stuff) - I read on this forum about the tax bands the french use so they would add up all the incomes worldwide and then offset my UK rental income and then tax my other income on whatever band I'm in based on all incomes added together? Is that correct?

  5. Hi'a - If you are resident in France and receive an income from property rental in the UK which you then offset against your UK personal allowances etc. If you also have another untaxed income in another country does this come under income tax that you can offset this against your tax allowance in France? If you don't work in France due to early retirement do you still get a tax allowance in France?

  6. Hi'a - My wife and I are UK citizens although we have not lived or worked in the UK for 10 years. We are making the permanent move to France later this year. I understand from reading previous posts that as we won't be working and we are both in our 40's (i.e under retirement age) then we can't apply for state health insurance or a Carte Vitale. Could someone be kind enough to confirm that is the case and if so that we have to take out private health insurance. Any recommendations on english worded health insurance websites (My french is still very rough to say the least and I could only find french ones when I searched). We have a AXA in our village is it better just to stay with a local provider rather than on-line. Many thanks.

  7. Hi All

I have buildings and contents insurance with an agent who has insured me with AGF. I took out the insurance 6 years ago and receive a bill which I pay every year by cheque. I don't live in the property. Originally I received a policy but noticed that I now don't receive a renewal policy after I pay the yearly premium. Cheques are made out to the agents own name. The bill does have AGF on it. 2 questions - Should I receice a policy. Secondly I called the agent a few years ago to ask about increasing the buildings cover as the value of the property is a lot higher than when I purchased and he said it's not a problem it's covered to rebbuild. Policy is in french and he won't supply an english translation. Is this normal to have no value on the policy. I'm getting a gut bad feeling about the whole scenario.

    Many thanks
