1. Thanks. I will do.Just thought someone else may have actually done it. I know lots of people who have moved dogs from England to the US and back, but not from a country that is not rabies free. I will get onto the Embassy tomorrow. Hopefully all we need is someone to take the dog for the 30 days, which should be do-able! Thanks again!
2. Well done for getting him off the lead...But why on earth would he run away?! He must know he has well and truly landed on his paws!
3. That is really useful, Merlin, thanks. The only restriction appears to be the rabies jab....According to the website the dog cannot arrive in the US till 30 days after the jab. That sounds like it is quite do-able, as there isn't any mention of blood tests to check the antibodies. Or is this me being stupid? Thanks Rowan
4. Has anyone ever taken a dog from France to the US, please? An American woman is interested in adopting one of the dogs from the Carcassonne SPA and has asked me to look into the costs and logistics. HELP please! I know it is a bit crazy, but as people may know from the animal welfare forum, the SPA is overflowing and we need to get some dogs out of there before it is too late for them! Thanks for any advice!
5. Will get back to you soonest. Thanks for the photo Christine!
6. We have a young cocker!!! Not a cross, even. A red colour one (there is probably a technical term) She was abandoned due to changes in family circumstances about a month ago, the lady brought her in in tears. She is good with cats and children (including babies). I will get you more info if you are interested!
7. Quite often people who have refuges have set up a special rate with a local vet and they might be able to help you. SPAs or other private refuges. Spaying is the key, I am sure. I was talking to a girl recently who said that her grandma's cat has had numerous litters of kittens as her grandma is waiting for a pure white kitten, and in the meantime all the kittens are being drowned. I said "I'll but the woman a pure white kitten if she will have her cat spayed!". Needless to say my offer was refused. I despair!
8. Thanks to Rdupre and Pads.... Ref caring, the horrid woman who makes up the list doesn't even know the dogs, she just looks at the paperwork to see who is oldest or who has been there longest, or, in the case of Tigue (now Ozzy) who she just doesn't like the look of (or again in Ozzy's case, who has the sense to realise she is horrid and growl at her. I like to think I would do the same if I were a dog!). But I bet she doesn't give them a second thought afterwards and I doubt she loses sleep, the way I do (and Flo and some of the others, too). Part of me can't help wishing I had that detachment tho'. But I would be a different person, I guess. I want to save them all, as I have never ever met a dog I didn't like, even the corgi who bit me outside Southampton Library when I was about 4! And most of them I simply LOVE and having only ever had rescue dogs as pets, I am aware that they reward your love a million fold, so it is hard to see them die. Especially as when they are put into the van to the vets they think they are going on a lovely adventure and look so trusting. Makes me weep. We humans just don't deserve dogs. Present company excepted, of course! Thanks for your support, I need it!
9. Thanks. I am not sure I am the right person to do this either, I am far too emotional!
10. I don't forget any of them, believe me. And I am so grateful to the association who is taking the 3. What I need to do is stop looking the dogs in the eyes. It is a killer for me. They are all so trusting and I find myself promising that I will find them homes; which I just can't do, and I hate breaking promises.
11. So it has been agreed? That is GREAT! Last I heard it was still up in the air. I am feeling less horrid now. I know there is still loads to do, but getting associations accepted in principle is a huge step forward. I am sure this one is fine. In fact I am sure they are all fine, why else would they be doing what they do?! X
12. Christine Yes, you are right, only a couple were put down in the end, largely due to internet activity. But it is very difficult persuading the SPA to let the dogs go to other associations. We may just have had a breakthrough, tho, with the president admitting in a long conversation with me yesterday that as long as the associations were trustworthy and credible, she wouldn't object. Not sure if the 3 you mentioned have actually made it out yet. But yes, the dog at the top of the thread is one of them, along with his sister, so fingers crossed. We have an elderly beagle/basett cross (I think I sent you a photo earlier) who is going to be put down if she is not adopted on our open day next weekend, but I am trying to cook up a plan for her. She is 12 and really small and cute and just wants a nice place to rest. She was abandoned along with 2 much younger dogs who have both since been adopted, and all the other dogs she has shared her kennel with since have been adopted, so she is getting quite depressed! Not surprised! I will keep you posted.
13. Hi everyone Just back from the SPA. I had just walked a lovely dog, to be told that was his last walk, as he is being put down in the morning, along with about 9 others. I was too shocked to ask about the others, and I know I have no chance of saving them all in any case, with no warning at all. But we can, between us, save one. Please say we can! This chap is being put down because he is time expired, and they have no more space. He was brought in as a puppy of 7 months and is still there, nearly 4 years later. He has never known any love or had any cuddles, other than on walks with the few volunteers. Nevertheless he has a beautiful nature, is great with people, inc children, other dogs, doesn't pull on the lead, and is in the peak of health. He is small to medium in size and would be a lovely pet. His brother is there too, and I suspect he will meet his maker tomorrow, but please help me save this little one. Let him have some fun, otherwise what is it all for? Please, I am desperate. Can anyone help him? There are more ohotos of him on the first page of the SPA Carcassonne website, if anyone wants to look. I can't upload photos in any case (unless it works this time, by some miracle) Please think about taking him as a second dog, if you have one, or a first dog if you don't.
14. 2 Months ago Carcassonne (11) €180.
15. Oh, I should have said, even if no one can take them both, please consider taking one of them. They are separated now in any case! Thanks again to RH for help with the photos...Will try that next time. And thanks to Christine for the pic of them together. There is video of them on the SPA website, too. http://spacarcassonne.e-monsite.com/rubrique,videos-chiens,179198.html
16. BJC Thanks for joining the forum; saves me acting as middle man, especially as I can't upload photos! The ones you sent yesterday are lovely! What a lucky boy! Rowan
17. Hello again everyone The Carcassonne SPA has two elderly beagles who have been resident for some time. They are believed to be brothers, have identical markings and were found abandoned together. They are both about 11 years old, but in great health. Until last week they were housed together, where they could see the green grass of the surrounding hills. They played together in their kennel, but as time went on their frustration with being incarcerated has grown and their play became a bit aggressive The SPA has now separated them, one is in the old pen, the other is in a tiny pen, where he can't see any other dogs or any countryside. This upsets me enormously. They are both sad, each probably thinks the other is dead, and in some ways that may as well be true, as they will never see each other again. As you probably all know, I have a soft spot for beagles, and I would like to help. The SPA refuses to put them back together (which I understand if the play was getting out of hand), but they also refuse to put them with other dogs, despite the fact that they are both very sociable. All they (the SPA workers) want is an easy life and moving dogs means a bit of paperwork and a couple of seconds on a computer. No chance! Can anyone offer one or even both of them a home. Now they are taking up two kennels, not just one, and we all know what happens when the Carcassonne SPA runs out of space. These dogs are lovely, very gentle and great with all other dogs and children. Neither reacted to the cats when I took them to the catterie. They are in good health but their hunting days are over (assuming they were chasse dogs...) They just want somewhere nice to spend their last years. If they were adopted together and kept anywhere with a bit of garden they would play fine together, but being in such a tiny space is just too much for such free spirits! Can anyone help? I am giving links to photos in the hope that some kind soul will upload them for me, or that someone with a mac will tell me how the heck to do it myself. Thanks everyone! 18. Hmmm I don't see them. I am using a Safari from my Mac. I have a load of icons underneath, mostly smiley faces and one is a pint of beer, but no Word type ones.....
19.
Rowan, when you post a pic make sure the code starts with [ IMG ] and ends with [ /IMG ] (close the brackets up close to the text) highlight the link and click on the ball and chain icon 2nd from right, just above the text box That should do it....[Www]
Thanks RH...But on which page is the ball and chain icon? On photobucket or on our forum? Rx
20. Think she may have a new home sorted....We are going to meet them next Thursday, which means I have her for a whole week more! Yippee! Of course, by that time I will love her even more, but it will be great to find her a forever home..... Will keep you posted! Rowan
21. I am rubbish at adding photos, but will try again and if it goes wrong, please could someone help me out (again!) Diana is with me, settling in well, learning how to be a dog from my two (one of whom you may recognise as Lily, recently of the Carcassonne SPA, the other is Scout, my rescue terrier). Diana is a sheer delight. She is very affectionate and loyal, follows me and my husband around and is desperate for love (which she is getting in spades). She was house-trained from day one, not a single accident, which is quite amazing, but probably due to the fact that she has my 2 to copy. She trots round the garden happily and plays with Scout a lot (Lily sleeps most of the time; old girl), and makes no attempt to escape (tho she could if she wanted to). I love her to bits and am so so glad that she is safe. She is only 2 and a half and can put all the horrid SPA stuff behind her, I am sure. Thanks for asking about her! She is a lovely elegant lady. I would love to keep her, to be honest, but need to keep my husband too! DON'T TEMPT ME!!!!
