morning all,

sitting here in western australia en route back to LBF - soon to take up residence [finally].

can anyone tell us about this new idea of abolishing inheritance tax in France, supposedly since the arrival of Monsieur Sakorzy?

we have read a rather nebulous article which says this might take place - if true, marvellous!

I don't think it's the tax that is being proposed to be abolished - only the Napoleonic rules for who inherits.

The rules cause a vast number of problems from micro division of property between many inheritors to the ever increasing problems of enforced inheritance of off-spring of divorced people.  Add to that the complexities of different marriage regimes and you can see that the system at least needs to be reviewed.

Not sure where LBF is ?

Interesting (recent but undated) article on the subject which might assist (or scare the living daylights!) in response to your enquiry. (You are not alone with your dilema!)

French Entree.com - French Law Zone- article entitled " BEWARE -French Succession Law can overide your Will" Written by Jane Howard of Blevins Franks Tax Advisory Service.

Good Luck.

The change in the inheritance tax being suggested today would abolish inheritance tax completely for married couples and increase the tax-free ceiling for children to €150000.

The change is not yet official.
