PossumGirl
I asked at our pharmacy, which is usually able to get me anything I need. Neither of their distributors carry crème de tartre. However, yesterday I was able to find non-aluminum baking powder (poudre de levure as opposed to levure chimique) in the baking section of Leclerc. It is one of the Bio brands and is exactly what I would have made myself with cream of tarter. Now I don't have to try to buy a kilo of the stuff online!PG
Lori
Thanks PG, I will look for it next time I visit LeClerc. I hope our store carries it.
Rob Roy
Great PG, thanks. I won't have to keep asking friends to bring baking powder from the UK now!
PossumGirl
It's so funny; when we lived in the States, we would load our suitcases up with all kinds of things from France that we wanted but couldn't find there, and now that I'm here, I keep finding weird things that I didn't even realize I took for granted when I lived there, but can't find here!PG
Lori
Like graham crackers. I wanted to make a graham cracker pie shell and have been trying to figure out what subsitute cookies I can use. Any ideas?Sorry, slightly off topic.
samdebretagne
I often use those thin, rolled wafer cookies (cigarettes russes). Otherwise you can use any type of crumbly cookie (petit beurre, sablées, etc).
Lori
Thanks Sam - that is exactly what I thought. Leader Price sell a big bag of vanilla type cookes and they are very cheap (but tasty), so I'll give them a try.
PossumGirl
I've used Palets Breton with good success, Lori. Also, I buy cornflakes and run them through the food processor to make corn flake crumbs, which also work great for a lot of recipes.PG
