bryansmith
Has anyone tried pickling beetroot with the brown vinegar found in supermarkets...how did it go. I haven't been able to find proper dark brown malt vinegar, and we do love a cold meat and beetroot sandwich!
Beryl
I haven't pickled them in that type of vingear but I do serve cooked sliced beetroot that way and with a tad of sugar. I am quite partial to a cheddar and beetroot sarnie, when I can get the cheese.
andyh4
I think you'll struggle to find malt vinegar unless you have a local "British shop" or a Supermarket with a very anglocentric foreign goods shelf.Red vinegar enleve en chein (matured in oak) works well. 0Helen
I always use wine vinegar for pickles and chutneys. It acts as a good preservative and does not taste too 'vinegary'. I have just opened some peach chutney that I made 3 years ago and it is fine.0Helen
Meg
I did a load of beetroot using the 'special conserves' vinegar. Lets just say it could have done with a bit of sugar added!! [:'(]
Pads
White pickling vinager , I find is better and a lighter taste, we also add a few dried pepper corns and a hot chill as thats what we like.
Patf
Cider vinegar is easily available and works well with pickles and chutney. But for beetroot I much prefer just plain boiled, especially small ones. Or baked in their skins in the oven - really sweet. Pat.
