Inheritance / Gift Tax

Does anyone know which tax law kicks in when receiving an inheritance/gift from one EU country when you're a French resident?

In Ireland, there is no tax paid on family gifts under about €400,000 while in France, the threshold is about €50,000.  If we receive a gift from Ireland, do we have to pay the French gift tax?

I have a feeling the answer is not the one I'm hoping for

As I understand it you are only liable if you have been resident in France for 6 of the last 10 tax years. I found a reference to it on the French Embassy site UK, it is very clear, section F/ INHERITANCE AND GIFT DUTIES, I suggest you print out a copy!

Hopefully there helps, this looks general and not UK specific.
