An estimated 3,100 fuel stations are empty, with rationing introduced in
areas which are particularly popular with British visitors, including Brittany and Normandy.

‘In the west of the country and in Paris, more than a third of filling stations have been shut down – the situation is extremely serious,’ said a transport ministry spokeswoman.

Yesterday, France’s biggest oil refinery was back in the hands of militant trade unionists amid warnings that industrial action is costing the country up to £350million a day.

Demonstrators restored their blockade at the port of Fos-sur-Mer, Marseilles, following last week’s clearing of their demonstration by riot police.

About 70 ships, including oil tankers, are waiting at anchor off the coast of Marseilles because militants will not let them dock and unload.

Jean-Francois Cope, leader of the ruling UMP in parliament, said: ‘In France, we have a sort of ritual from another century. Strikes, protests, yes, but taking the economy hostage is intolerable.’

Students are holding a mass demonstration today against a new bill which will raise the retirement age from 60 to 62. President Nicolas Sarkozy hopes to see it ratified tomorrow after it was rubber stamped by the senate on Friday.

A general strike against the bill is scheduled for Thursday, with the police preparing to face renewed violence.

There was a report last week, unconfirmed, on another forum that a fuel retailer in Mortain (I have no idea which) was limiting sales to 30€ and giving you 7 litres for that sum. There are certainly limits, and some places have run out, but fuel is available in the region and the situation seems to be gradually improving.
