Beryl
I watched Thalassa last Friday and saw how the US sank an old war ship off the coast of Florida to create an artificial reef. [:(] I think the programme stated that it would have just cost 13 (?) million dollars to have it scrapped properly so it was decided to sink it to create somewhere useful for divers! It still has dangerous things on board but apparently they are safely sealed ( at least until the metal corrodes)I wonder if the same fate might befall the Clemenceau either accidentally or otherwise? I do hope not.
Clarkkent
But have you seen the conditions in India on the beaches where ships are broken up?Creating a new reef seems to me to be a positive way of dealing with an old ship. Such substances as may remain after the ship has been properly decommissioned would leach very slowly - perhaps over 100 years or more - and cause no problem.
