janetilett
Hi thereWe have een buying logs for our open fire from our french neighbour, but I m beginning to think they are expensive... We pay 60 euros for one meter cubed... Is this the normal price for logs in France? It seems so expensive compared to the price in UK... (however, most things have increased in price in France compared to the UK).Janet

Simon-the-censored
Hi JanetBit steep from a neighbour - more like a high end retail price - but not out of the ballpark.Simon :-)
JohnRoss
We pay our local farmer 43 euros a cubic metre for 50cm logs or 47 euros a cubic metre (stère) for the same logs split. The price last year was the same. The wood is mostly Ash or Oak................................JRPS This site http://www.bois-de-chauffage.net/ shows about 153 euros for 2 stères delivered in our area

Tony F Dordogne
I've given up trying to give the (oak) wood away, decided to use the logs/wood for ornamental things round the garden now!

Tony F Dordogne
Live in back of beyond, no passing traffic at all so not an option, have even tried advertising it in the commune newsletter and still no takers. This time round I'm not pressing the issue, now have identified a lovely long garden sculpture to make with the wood instead.
Anton Redman II
How odd, they sell dug out old vines round here for fire wood as well.
Judith
We've just paid 60€ for a stere, actually cheaper than we have paid before ...
Mr Coeur de Lion
I never paid more than 35€ a stere and they were cut to 33cm lengths.
Patf
We pay 55€ per stere, 50cm lengths of good quality oak.Part of the expense is transportation costs. How far does he have to travel, type of vehicle etc.
nectarine
I think it depends where you are. When we were in the Limousin we got oak or hornbeam, cut to 50cm lengths, for about 40 euros a stere, godo wood. But there's a lot of trees there, and not as many here. So 60euros is normal here for oak, although you can get cheaper wood if you purchase plum (throws out a fierce heat but spits!). So the price the OP is paying is 'in the ballpark' but it is always worth asking around, and trying to find out what and where your neighbours purchase from. Chancer
One stere weighs 1.29kg.To that you will have to add the weight of the wood contained within and the pallet [:P]Oh and deduct the weight of the air displaced [:P]

Keni
We pay 40 euros for a 1 metre cube of oak mixed with birch, or 15 euros from the barrel maker for a metre cubed bag of oddments of oak or 20 euros for a stere of oak, 1 metre lengths - leftovers from the barrel making. We are in the Haute Vienne.

Judith
How many days of burning do you get from your 1 metre cube ?
Surely that is determined by how long and hard you have your fire. And (yes, I know), the type of wood - but having one on all day to only on in the evening will make a huge difference.
Keni
Hi Krusty, how you doing? Glad to see you are still with us. Hope you had a good Christmas - which part of Cyprus are you in -we were in Paphos during June.Chris puts the fire on around 9.00am - it's the only heating we have in the house and the stere will last us around a month, with the fire kept going all day. Not bad value!
