moto licence

Your wife's UK provisional licence and CBT certificate have no validity in France, so she will have to enrol with a driving school and take the French theory test (attestation  de sécurité routière - ASR) followed by the practical test.

Your son will be able to sit his theory test through his school (attestation scolaire de sécurité routière - ASSR) - part 1 during class 5, then part 2 during class 3.  He will then be able to sit the practical test for his cyclomoteur licence (brevet de security routiere - BSR).  This will allow him to ride a 50cc 'scooter'.

Once he is aged 16, he can go on to sit the practical test for a category A1 licence (motorcycles up to 125cc and a maximum power rating of 11kW (15ch)

As you can imagine, they would both need a reasonable knowledge of French...

Just to qualify SD's excellent reply - the minimum requirement for the BSR licence is 5 hours of lessons at a driving school and for the A1 licence it's 21 hours of lessons - these are obligatory. My son is currently taking lessons for his A1 licence and by the time he has completed his course and passed the exam the cost will be around 1000 euros - and then the true expense will begin I suspect [blink]

if language is a problem the best advice would be for your wife to return to the UK and do a residential DAS course or do the DAS before comming to France this is the simplist way as she will be able to do the theory without the language barrier and she will already be more familiar with the road regulations in the uk.  you can do a DAS including the test fee from as little at £350 to £600 dependant on how much time you need ;)
