Does anyone have experience of installing an outdoor school in the south of france? I'm interested in knowing the cost involved and whether there are specialist firms as there are in England, or whether it would be better to get it done ourselves with plant hire. Also is the climate more conducive to a simple sand school without the attendant costs involved of extensive drainage as we have to do here - or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Hi there,

I'm just about to build one 30x15m, as it is only for myself and for lessons, etc I go to my club 30min away where I have a 60x20m at my disposal.

There are specialist firms but they tend to be located more towards the Paris area and the centre of France. Check the back of magazines like L'eperon, Cheval Loisirs etc.

It depends on where you are and what your ground is like. I will have to install drainage as it rains quite a lot and the ground is clay. However, if you just have sand there is only so much drainage you want as it gets too deep and dry if it's drained too well. The most difficult thing here is deciding what sand to go for, and you can forget things like rubber, as it doesn't exist AFAIK.
I will have mine installed by a company that does terrassement and it is done according to my specifications.

Let me know if you want any more info.

Regards,
Christiane

I have just put in a sand school this week. 40 by 30 I got the sand for 7.55 Euro per tonne (delivered), used about 130 tonnes but will top up in summer another 30 tonne once all is settled. Used wooden board of 8 by 2 in which were 1.50 euro a metre.- from local builders mechant. Until I can afford some railway sleepers. Also post and railed.(which I had anyway) Depending on your ground I have put the sand direct on to short gut grass as the land have very good drainage, this is important as if your ground does have good drainage do not disturb it you will do more damage in the long run. A machine took 4 hour to move sand and level it about 50 Euro a hour. I have a friend who is a expert on sand school so his knowledge was invalueble. All in all I have done it for less than 2000 euro.

I posted on the same subject in UK.rec.equestrian (outlook express) and had some pretty detailed replies. Someone suggested using some of the bark chippings you can get for next to nothing from the woodyards (they virtually give them away), but I have put my back out, so haven't got round to installing my arena yet. Also got some very detailed replies on installing on badly drained land. May be worth trawling through their achives - e-mail me direct if you can't find it because I've probably got a hard copy somewhere.
