We've got a putois leaving nasty smells around our farmhouse.

Anybody got any good ideas to get rid of either the smell or the creature itself.

Have tried spraying the area (exterior) with bleach this evening but am not too optimistic this will work.

Your help/advice much appreciated.

Bleach?   I don't think so!

Smelly little darlings aren't they, in fact drifting just a bit, there are an awful lot of smelly creatures around when you think about it.

Cage trapping and moving elsewhere would be the best approach as far as I am concerned, but the positioning and baiting are not easy, I take it you are very near water; river or lake?

Chris.

Just seen your post Jon, they often install themselves around farms, inhabited or not.

What ho, Chris! I've used the pee and hair approach succesfully in

detering foxes (well, I think it was that which saw them off! It could

just have been the sight of me looming through the early morning mist

in my dressing gown - on the basis that the first of the day is the

strongest, you understand - to wee on the bushes that put them off their

breakfasts[+o(]) and I've heard about people using the same to rid themselves of polecats.

I think that you are right about the bleach. I wish I could could

remember where, but I a sure I read recently about bleaching actually

encouraging some animals (dogs, I think) to rescent an area. Pine

rosin, on the other hand, I have a feeling does work in eliminating

strong animal odours. The St Marc brand is easy to find in bricos.

Useful for cleaning up if not deterring ......use biological washing powder/liquid.  This will actually get rid of the smell on floor/concrete/carpet and usually remove stains.  Any disinfectant and bleach which contain ammonia will encourage re offending as main constituent of urine is also ammonia  (particularly useful info if you have kitten/puppy).  You may have to buy specially for deterring your beast as if you have a fosse it is not usually recommended to use these biological things in the washing machine.
