planning permission

We will be viewing a number of barns/farm buildings in France soon, can anyone tell me whether we should expect the properties to be sold with planning permission for renovaton, or do we buy property without permission and hope it will be given, how does it work???? Also how do you check the legitimacy of any planning awards or do you take the owner's word for it?

Roughly at the same stage as you at the moment, so can't speak from experience, but from what we've learnt so far, I think it's the exception rather than the rule that planning permission has already been granted. Usually, it will be up to you to seek planning permission for whatever you wish to do by consulting the local Mairie. Where planning permission has already been granted, it would also be the Mairie to tell you just what has been permitted.
Wish you lots of luck, a time of great excitement and great uncertainty - perhaps you can't have one without the other when buying a home in another country.
