I ride here and have heard that you should have a licence that you can get from the riding school.  How true this is i'm not sure so i also would be interested.  I do have insurance (liability) which was actually already included in my house insurance.

I've never heard of a licence just to ride, only for serious competition which, unlike the UK , needs you to show on paper some competence before being allowed to compete.

As for insurance I would check carefully of what's in your house policy as mine only allows for damage to property but not people.

As for the licence, my daughter goes to some local stables and has to get a licence from the FFE -Federation Francaise d'Equitation via the stables (the same goes for me at the Tennis club - but from the FFT and I believe any other sporting activity  )  This covers you for insurance as well as other benefits.

I don't know if this would apply to privately owned horses.

Try looking at their website for info - http://www.ffe.com/
What are the laws in france with riding on public roads? are they the same as the uk?? and info would be great
In France a horse on a public road has to follow the exact same rules as any other vehicle. Namely the Code de la Route. In particular the minimum age is 14, or 12 if accompanied by an adult(over 21). Riding two abreast is not allowed. Insurance is required and if your drunk or you kill or seriously injure somebody you can go to prison !
