Just had to post this as so happy to get french plates for motorhome !!! Seems to have been a long battle with paperwork but worth it now all is finished. Seems incredible to have to jump though so many hoops given that it was first registered in Germany then UK . Is this Europe or did I imagine it!!!

Well done....[:D]

The problem with motorhomes is that they are based on commercial vans, so unlike cars and motorcycles, they don't yet fall within EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval.  That's the common technical and safety standards to which qualifying vehicles destined for sale in the EU must be built and which allows them to be registered anywhere in the EU without having to undergo any further inspection or modification.

That means that up until recently, motorhomes had to go through inspections and tests in order to obtain local approval in each country of registration, but the manufacturers are now able to submit them for EU approval as 'specialised vehicles' rather than vans.  Broadly speaking, anything commercially built after around 2003/4 should qualify for a 'specialised' EU certificate of conformity.  Those built prior to then will continue to be subject to the tests and inspections.

Of course, all DIY campers are subject to the full monty regardless of age..........

Thank you. This is the last hoop for us ! When we change van will be for a french registered one. Did think about changing to save hassle of re registering but much too expensive and for nothing better than we have !! Took the carte grise as instructed back to get stamp for controle technique only to be told by guy not necessary ! I said but boss says yes , he answers but boss is an idiot !! Guess this is France

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi, we have to date registered two uk plated motorhomes, the 1st was a selfbuild ford transit based, which was a bit of pain to get passed, but we did even with the side door on the wrong side, the 2nd was a left hand drive hymer, for which all we needed was the hymer cert from hymer france and that was that, no tests no inspections.

If we buy another motorhome it will be from germany and a hymer again. prices are to high in france.
