soil pipe?

sorry, Im asking this question on behalf of my husband. Our house doesn't have a soil stack vent. We are putting in an upstairs bathroom and dont know whether to just connect the loo to the existing soil pipe which goes to the fosse septic or to vent the pipe above the gutter level like in UK.

If we don't put a soil pipe vent in, then is there a danger of buildup of fumes like in the Uk, or is this only because of being on main sewage in the UK? what happens to the build up of fumes here then?

grateful to know if anyone else with septic tank systems has got soil vent pipe or not.
thanks
Maria

Every fosse septique should have a primary ventilation taken above roof level from the main inlet pipe to the fosse, which can be a continuation of the soil pipe to above roof level. ALSO every fosse should have a secondary ventilation pipe taken as close as possible to the outlet pipe of the fosse. This is very important especially with concrete fosses. The gases that build up need to be vented and will often rot and weaken the concrete and cause them to collapse if not vented. I have recently dealt with two cases of this happening and the only solution was to replace the fosses as they had literally collapsed in. Some fosses have this secondary ventil;ation built into the lids or the tank itself.

Paul

Hi,
I know it's a bit after the fact, and you've probably OD'd on advice but....
There should be a pipe at least 50mm taken off from the highest point (furthest from the fosse) to - well ideally - roof level. Open vented if it's external, but internal (like a roof space) is allowed if it is fitted with a one way valve to allow air in only.
You'll find that without it, depending on the layout of the pipework - you get the 'tube train effect' the water passing down the pipes from the new upstairs loo pushes the air through the pipe in front of it, then sucks in air behind it through the traps of all the things downstairs with much Hollywood special-FX gurgling! It tend to happen less when all the appliances are on the one level, but add a drop of 2 or 3 metres and you'll really notice it!
There should also be a vent from the fosse itself as others have mentioned, although many fosses don't!
