Property Next Door

We have a derelict property next to our barn conversion and are wondering what is the best way to find out if we can purchase it. Our nearest neighbour states it has been empty for at least 15 years and judging by the overgrown brambles I would think this is about right. No one local has any info on the current owner(s) and we wonder if anyone has any knowledge as to the best way for us to go about making the necessary enquiries. Has anyone ever tried this themselves and if so to what results?

Definitely ask the Mairie.

If you get the parcelle number (which should be on their big maps), I am sure you could also check it out at your local "bureau de cadastre".  It has to be owned by someone.

We had a similar property next to our sheds.  After many enquiries locally, it turned out to belong to two sisters (one 12km away and the other in Paris), who had inherited it from their grandmother.  They had never even been to see it till we expressed interest in it.  Then of course they held out for far more than it was worth!  Annoying at the time, but we felt it was worth it, as it had a bit of land that just squared off our garden.
