1. Whilst I agree with most of BSLV's post above I don't get the tax points 6 and 7, if it's your principal residence there is no capital gains to pay if it hasn't then it's around 27% I believe, unless things have changed.

I am considering another property at the moment despite all of the above, I seem to be collecting them!  It all depends on the price you can get a property for and how long you intend to keep it, how much you depend on selling it to live etc. etc.  The house I've seen has been dropped by 100k which is more than 50% of it's original value, this is in the Alps where this kind of thing just doesn't normally happen.  There are going to be properties about that will make you some money in this market, it's a huge gamble and must be seen as a long term project not to make a quick buck.  I'm going to live in the one I buy here if I get it, my other properties are rented out and I intend to keep the others until the capital gains is 0 which is 15 years, 5 of those have passed already.

So, unless you are making long term plans of plus 10 years I would not recommend it as a career move but am doing it a bit myself!

  2. Hello

In answer to the last post, no I have not gone over before but have been told today that I can not change back to micro for 2008!  It's a nightmare as of course now I need somehow to sort out my expenses for last year to off set against my earnings, under the mico with a stright abbatement I did't need to account for expenses and so haven't!  I was under the (false) impression that you have some tolerance up to 30,500 beofre beng forced to change, this is not the case.

I am really annoyed about the whole thing but the tax office just shrug and say it's my fault for going over and they have no obligation to inform of the change, despite the fact that the levels are now higher, that I am part-time salaried this year etc, etc.  They do say that I can request to change back for this financial year but it's last year I am most concerned about.

Can anyone point me at a source of info about what I can claim as expenses and how to complete the TVA return that has just landed?

Who will be badly hit, as is already the case, are the restaurants and bars, with reports from the French ski resorts that the slopes were reasonably busy this season, but the restaurants and bars empty.
`

    You are spot on with that, the resorts faired not too bad on numbers but those spending money were few and far between;

  4. Hi All

It would seem that the tax office are forcing me to change regimes to Regime Controllée, has anyone else experienced this?  Last year I went over the 27k earnings limit but was under the allowed tolerance which was then 30.500.  I have received no notification of a change execpt that in place of a 2042 form I have recieved a 2035k and also a VAT declaration form.

I called the tax office asking why and they were not able to tell me.  Last year I was under the limit although of course they dont know that yet as tax returns are not in yet.  This year I will also be under as I have part-time job.

The most annoying part about all this is that if they had said something last year I could have prepared myself for the change, now I will have to dig deep to prove some expenses otherwise I will be well down on income.

They also continue to send info to my address of two years past despite having completed the govenment site for moving (which I found on here) and having written to them and the other agencies, all the others, URSSAf, Cipav use ,y new address.

Al in all not too pleased... they are to call me next week on it.

Reeducation for the pelvic area after child birth is a good thing !!

The muscles in that area are damaged by child birth , and reeducation is done to  prevent incontinence problems that women may have in the future.

The sexual benefit was never mentioned in my case in the " cours de préparation à la naissance " , they only told us about the problems that may happen in the future if those muscles were not stimulated.

It is totally free, social security pays for the physio sessions.

I can't believe you don't have them in the UK / US !?
It was exactly the same in the UK for me when I gave birth, you were told to get on with your excercises ASAP.  No electrical device was employed in the hospital although there are plenty on the market [;-)] and if ithey work why not, and the benefits are for both parties in a sexual relationship not just the man obviously.

  6.
Wow, thanks for all the answers, there's certainly much to think about when there are children involved. We too have adopted the system that in the house it's English and outside it's French (obviously with exceptions when there are friends around). We're lucky here in Montpellier that there is an association that teaches English to English children in a saturday morning club (www.ieam.info) and I've heard of another in Civray (www.accents-asso.fr) but elsewhere it seems pretty hit or miss.

Am I wrong but do only the children with both parents being English/Anglophone have the right accent in both languages? Mine children sound like either English kids or French kids depending on the languages whereas children with French-Anglo parents seem to hold onto the French accent even when they are speaking English. What do you think?
I dont think its as simple as where the parents orignate, I have friends who, whilst both english, adopted an early stance of speaking french at home and their children sound french when speaking english and forget lots of words.

I have always worried about my sons english level, he is nine and can read to his age level and of course can speak fluently but his spelling is poor.  I'm not happy to send him to extra classes in the school year as the work load is already quite heavy so this year Im going to spend the whole summer hols in th UK with the aim of getting him some good english instruction for a few hours each week as well as the interaction with english kids all summer Im hoping this will help.

Well thanks, Panda.  I'm not sure that my response was completely nuts.  In fact I don't think it was all that different from yours in essense.

I agree with you, Steve.  I'd love to be a cat (well, mine, anyway!).  Great life.   Free board and lodging and total freedom.  And they don't give a stuff about the exchange rate....
Ha, only just read this and I meant the thread on AI not here, should have been clearer, who would dare to suggest you were nuts?

  8. I think the responses to the whole thread are completley nuts!  Having been around stables and horses pretty much all of my life I can say that the practice of having cats which are semi-feral is completley normal and happens in every yard I have visted.

All of the cats I've encountered are totally happy living this way, it's a natural life for a cat.  They get attention when people are on the yard, they get fed but they have no other restriction on their life.  They have a real role to play in keeping the mice down and are appreciated, wihtout them what could you do, resort to posion??

I have much more of a problem with someone having a house cat that never goes out and working 8 hours a day leaving the cat alone and shut inside, what a horrible life for a creature who likes to stalk about and hunt!  I had a neighbour with such a cat in the UK and it looked fat and miserable when ever I saw it.

  9. Hi

I did exactly the same thing Pierre with my son, it was the only way to stop him howling every evening from 5 until 8.  It does stop around 3 months, hence the name I guess!  Interesting that we are all saying 'he' I did read somewhere it as usually a male child problem, dont know why that would be??  I also used tried all the products mentiond iwth varying degrees of success.

  10.
Bah!   I tried to subscribe to the red list and got an email saying my service was incompatible.  Phoned Orange and discovered that because my calls go through  a Livebox I am not eligible to stop the nusciance calls via the Red List.

I would have to change my subscription and my line would be down for two weeks (so I was advised by Orange) .... or I could change to another company I told him.  Yeah he said, not remotely bothered.  I could almost hear him yawning. [:@]
Off tipic sorry but I threatened an Orange bod recently in the same way over the internet taking forever to be moved and I could feel the shrug of 'yea so what'.  I then went on to tell the last person I got (after the 5 week wait) that I had been lied to everytime I called them and that I wanted to take the matter further, they told me they have no line managers and that yes they knew that if you asked how long will the internet take to conect they often said 15 days when they mean 5 weeks and it was still another week at least until my line would be live.

I then asked who I could complain to and they told me only the director, so I say great give me his email address, line went quiet for a couple of minutes, she came back and gave it to me.  You can guess the rest I am sitting looking at my livebox and hey presto the internet line is live!

I don't think Steve has a problem. Like me he is just curious as to Dave's motives for not wanting to post his site address, after all it is free advertising and he says he is in the gite business, so ask yourself why no web site address ????

Perhaps it is all  really a figment of Steve's imagination and posting on here is his way of getting a life ! Each to his own.

Yes but who gives a flying you know what.. if it is in Steve imagination then he has missed his true calling!  As for not wanting some of the weirdos on here ot be able to trace him, who can blame him!!

EDIT, It should be noted I do actuall like some weirdos on here!

  12. Hi

I agree with all of the above and I too am lost on the CPAM de base, what's that about?  As far as the gite goes, is it registered as a professional business (or Micro non professional), do you pay cotisations on the income or just as a side line?  It's confusing unless none of the income is registered as professional ...

Why do you think you need to register as autoentre??

  13. Whilst we are naming and shaming my personal favourite is Decathlon, I love this store and shop there regularly as they have a good range of sportswear but I have NEVER been charged the correct price for everything I've purchased, not once and I go to this shop on average once every 6 weeks.  Each time I stand and check the receipt and each time I have to queue and ask for money back, they never quibble, to be fair, but they are hopeless on anything buy one get one at X, it is never in the computer.  The fact that they don't quibble does make me think they all know and hope it won't be noticed every time.

    You wrote:

No, I don't own these gites. I am given carte-blanche to run them as I see fit by their owner, who lives at the other end of the country. In my time here, I have turned it from a "hobby" with 4 - 5 bookings per year into a successfull, profitable business which I am still expanding. I plan to leave at the end of the 2009 summer season, but will continue to work hard till then, and plan on having the third and possibly fourth gite finished by August. I have a very low boredom threshold, and the time I have spent here has been profitable and good experience, but its time for me to move elsewhere.

I'm confused, the Gites belong to owners who live at the other end of France, who, because of this, give you free rein to do, what exactly? Use you own money to fund "facilities" as per your quote below?:..........

"However, the few hundred I spent on a table-tennis set-up, table football, badminton nets etc and a load of basic mountain bikes has proved to be a fantastic success."

So, you are a caretaker for the two gites then? and your good work has made it a profitable business for the owners?

You said in an earlier post that:.....

"I have 2 gites - one sleeps up to 7, the other up to 4".

You can perhaps understand some of the confusion...........

Are these yours or are these the Gites that are owned by the person at the other end of France? and where does Gite 3 & 4 come into it. You said:..

" and plan on having the third and possibly fourth gite finished by August"

Sorry you won't gives us the owners Gites website link but perhaps you could clear up some of the above confusion.

Steve what is your problem? Dave is without a doubt one of the most entertaining posters on this forum and you are trying to imply what exactly  with your questions??

As has been said before, there's a life out there for you, now why not go and  try to find it and leave the rest of us to laugh at Daves antics!

  15. Steve

You seem to have a problem with Dave's success, why is that?  Dave has said on prevous occasions he manages the gites he runs, he does not own them so deciding to give up as he's fed up with it is quite understandable, it's not his life it's his job!

His success in my opinion is down to his target market being almost entirely non Brits, thats where so many Brit gite owners go wrong, they advertise just in the UK and so this year they are going to feel the pinch. Living in a holiday area myself I can tell you that there has been a huge decline in Brit visitors to France already this year (down 25% in some resorts) and that every Brit I see is feeling the exchange rate and will likely see a trip to France as very expensive in comparison to previous years.  Dave won't have that issue as his target market earns in euros, this week for example in resort we have an abundance of Parisians and Belgians all with money to burn it would seem and not a word from them on the price of things, last week during Brit half term no one talked about anything else.

As has been said the gite business is fine as pocket money but not as main income, those days are long gone, look at how many complexies are up for sale....(I sold mine 2 years ago and very glad I am to)

  16. What a great post Twinkle, made me laugh as it`s so true!  The rest of this thread is very thought provoking, we all know what losing a pet is like it would seem and my thoughts and best wishes go out to anyone with recent loss, animal or human.

I lost my beloved Cocker lady 3 years ago at 16 and this post brings it all back.  I got her at a time in my life when I was very low and alone and I still miss her everyday, she never left my side (the bathroom issues in the post above are very relevant, after 16 years she never let me in there alone) and I still carry her urn of ashes with me, I can not bear to scatter them as I would hate to leave her anywhere, daft I know.
