I bought the "Closer" the other day to see what all the fuss was about. It's seems to be the same sort of stuff as in OK and Hello.
As for the Olympics I watched a session in the velodrome and a couple of days in the athletic stadium watching some wonderful performances by some world class athletes, apparently they were handicapped! It didn't appear so from where I was sitting, they just seemed like fantastic competitors to me.
It was a brilliant experience and one of the best of my long life.
I looked up the biographies of some of the competitors when I got back. I am now even more in admiration of them all.
Yes I know, how stupid of me to be taken in by it all!

Sorry, I must have missed earlier discussions about the performances at the Olympics, I only caught sight of one that consisted of gripes and whines about the Olympics disrupting peoples lives.

Just over a week ago I was just sitting watching a man with no left arm or left leg being assisted onto a bicycle. He had to be helped because he appeared to be disabled, which I suppose he was as he didn't have prosthetic limbs to help him. That was until he was on his bike, then he went like a rocket for 3000 metres without seeming to slow down. It was a really amazing performance from a man with one leg and one arm!
There were many others like him in the velodrome that day all of them producing amazing performances.
Then in the athletic stadium, for the three sessions I attended, I witnessed fanatastic athletes doing fantastic things which I and 80,000 people a session were privileged to watch.
Tennis just looks like a couple of people knocking a few balls about between taking a picnic and having a wash and brush-up.

On another subject. How nice to see a bit of passion on the forum, instead of the usual sterile postings where you all appear to agree with each other. Maybe though it's just that I am new here.

Yes, a fantastic day for Ennis, Farah, Rutherford, the rowers and cyclists.
Not sure about Murray though, as it's hardly an Olympic sport (imho).

Not me, it's only just started. Bring on the athletics, as I shall be glued to the telly every day. Then I am off at the end of August to watch some cycling in the velodrome and athletics at the Paralympics.
I am rather glad I missed out on tickets for the main games as I put myself down for £1400 quids worth. As it is it cost me £80 for for 16 tickets for the Para's, and that includes free travel to the games with London Transport.

All the subsequent advice on the forum (following my OP) advocating calling for trained medical assistance, is of course what anybody should do if they can. The point about my posting was for anybody alone in the car and maybe not near immediate help, which is what it said right at the beginning.
If you think the advice was a load of rubbish, so be it.

When I first received the email (from a friend) my first instinct was to delete it as I never usually forward these (send it on to 10 people you know) emails. But I thought that as there were a large number of old duffers on this forum it may be of some help to someone. Whether it works or not who knows, but if you find yourself on your own when it happens it might just make the difference until proper help comes. As has already been stated, this coughing mullarkey is no substitute for proper medical assistance.
Incidentally I come into the category of an "old duffer" myself and I wonder if I would be able to remember this advice if the circumstances ever arose.

Mary comes home from shopping to find Paddy painting the parlour walls with emulsion. Paddy is wearing a leather jacket with a hooded Parka over the top. As he is pouring with sweat, Mary asks him, "Sweet mother of Jayzus Paddy, why are you dressed like that?"

Finding myself in the same situation I like to think that I would most probably do exactly as you say you would and refuse any help from my government and dare the pirates to do their worst to me.
As I said, I like to think I would be as brave as you undoubtedly would. I have a strong feeling though that I would be a jibbering mess and be on my knees begging for help.
You said I cant imagine nor would I want the government to get involved. Having no stress in your life it surprises me that you say you have no imagination.

Being held captive for many months without the support of her husband by her side I'm prepared to accept that she may be suffering from just a little stress to have made that statement, aren't you? It's easy to pass comments from the safety of your own home.
I'd much rather they paid millions to the pirates to gain their release than give it to the Taliban. Then after the couple are released tell the Taliban where the money is that the UK government planned to give them.
