1. Weed feed and mosskill is effective but far too expensive for a large area. We use ferrous sulphate for killing moss. 5L will treat 150 sq m but you can make it go further by being selective about where you spray. Less than €4 for a bidon. I have found reasonably priced lawn feed in super U but I have yet to find a lawn weedkiller as inexpensive as Verdone.
2. I saw a post relevant to me this morning. It was regarding tiling on a shower base. I marked it to notify me when a new addition was added. It seems to have gone missing. I have searched on LeroyMerlin and shower  base but to no avail. Was it my imagination or what?
3. We are very suspicious of any "promotion" offer. Very often there is no advantage whatsoever. Our favorite was the white melamine shelving we bought at €3.5 that subsequently went on promo at €7.5. MOH who was an accountant in a former life carefully checks such things as the price of milk, Two 1 litre bottles often costs less the a 2 litre bottle, 2 x 10 packs of beer often is less than a 20 pack, 2 small tins of toms is also frequently less than one twice the size. Mr Bricolage is one of the worst offenders regarding shelf pricing vs till pricing. I feel sorry for those who do not have a tame accountant. They need to take a calculator when shopping in France.
4. You will need the E121 which details your husband and you as a dependant. This tells CPAM that the british government will subsequently be funding your basic healthcare. Take the forms (having photocopied beforehand) to your CPAM office. They are familier with the procedure and will arrange for your payments to stop.

NB you will still have to pay your mutuelle

5.

Is it very difficult to learn the difference between 'loose' and 'lose' ?

Reporters and newspaper letter writers (and posters on 'some' forums) seem to have a blind spot where these words are concerned.
Guilty as charged - I have a real problem with this and stare at it for hours trying to decide if I've written it correctly or not (mind you I do that a lot with my spelling which is cr*p and no, I don't mind in the least if people give me tips as to how to do it better, as long as they're not patronising or rude in the process.)
6. I think that the electric apple peeler takes some beating. By the time you have set it up, peeled the apple and washed the gadget up you will be ready for another apple. The electric milkshake maker is up there as well. I occasionally get sent a catalogue which is full of 100s of things ( usually electric) that you could live without. They are also astonishingly expensive.
7. We are going to the UK for a week and I usually use JS insurance as they are reasonable and cover EU residents. They cost of the insurance was about £10 BUT when I phoned the health check number to declare our high blood pressure as usual I was told that there was now a charge - £10 each! After checking our various  cards it seems that we only needed repatriation cover. I ended up with  a French company ACS AMI. Their charges for short haul destinations are very reasonable. They are not scaled by age and there are not extra charges to cover our (stable) high blood pressure.
8. Binje are also good for jacket potatoes. Grand frais sometimes have them loose and unwashed which makes them keep better than the super scrubbed ones.
9. The funny thing is that to be say an accountant in local government or the NHS you are or were required to have specialised knowledge of their procedures. This meant that outsiders were not considered - but their salaries were in arguing for the appropiate level of pay to match the private sector.

Middle and senior management in the Civil Service and local authorities have begun valuing and paying themselves as if they were in the private sector, so they should have the same pension provision. The indexed linked pension was in return for a lower salary throughout their careers. Now, they should contribute equally, work the same number of years and be sackable too.

I find this article quite alarming

For a moment I thought that I had written under a pseudonym. You echo my thought entirely. Mind you the number of very well paid executives in local council is outstripped by those in the NHS which had 160+ "chief executives" in the north west alone back in 2002 and many jobs paying over £90k. Their terms of employment, redundancy benefits and pensions were certainly to be envied by the mere workers in the NHS or the real world.

The EDF has a lot of problems with customers who think it is a good source of savings but in the end have used up so much electrical power on red days that it takes them years to pay off their debt to the EDF.

That is why they do not promote the use of "Tempo" , it still exists.

This is nonsense. For a start I am sure that the French are canny enough to work out how to manage their consumption. Also Tempo is only one option. We have Tempo and I did a rough calculation on our usage. According to a years figures we use about 40 kwh per day on blue and white and 21 on red days. Even if we used the same no of kwh on red days as on white days we would stil be ahead over the potential costs of the standard tarif. As I say this is only a rough calculation as the estimated bills make it difficuilt to be exact. The reason that Tempo is no longer an option for new users is more likely to be that it costs EDF money and the additional cost of the fancy meters that are needed.
