  1. hello water rat

I am now going to put more damp kitchen roll over them and will folow all your advice. I just love roast parsnip and we have put some straight into the gound but I have been told they are quite slow to surface. The carrots we planted have done nothing so far so I will try the same thing with them as well. Thanks for replying.

  2. Hello Anna

Yes, we have our old lady with a labrador but as I mentioned in a previous thread here she has also tolerated two rescue Boxers as well. Sadly, they have now gone and we have always had two dogs so, yes, when Molly does go we will definately give another dog a home and here in france there are certainly enough to choose from on various rescue sites. You said that you rarely go back to UK now, we have only been here for two years and although when we lived in England very little happened for years. We moved here and three months after we arrived our eldest daughter became pregnant again, our eldest grandaughter decided on a date for her wedding, our youngest son is getting married the end of this month and another baby due late September. We seem to be in UK more than we are here and it costs somuch each time we go back but we cannot miss all these family occasions. Serves us right for having four children and hoards of Granchildren.

  3. I have put some parsnip seeds onto damp kitchen roll and put into a plastic container. Do I cover the container ? also do I keep the kitchen roll dampened down or not.  All new tips for me so i want to get it right.
  4. Molly is the same, only happy if she is with us and she knows when we are going out and sits by the car. She will travel quite happily in the front with me and as she is so elderly she normally sleeps the whole journey there and back. The Labrador will miss her dreadfully when she does go as he tries to play with her and she just looks at him in disgust, he is only two years old. Yes, we hope the dreaded day does not come yet as I cannot imagine her not being around.

  5. The same as growing cress, which I still do over here...love egg and cress sarnies. I have some parsnip seeds as well so I will experiment with them all   Thanks

  6. I have an English lttle lady called Molly. She thirteen years old now and partially deaf and blind and a little bit Arthritic but she loves to wander around our garden and sit in the sun. She has outl ived two of our Boxer dogs and is now " boss " of a rescue French Labrador who we named Murphy. I know we will not have her for too much longer now but she has honestly been the best dog we have ever had, so obedient and loving. We rescued her when she was two years old so she has been with us for eleven years now and it will be such a very sad day when we lose her...it does not bear thinking about.
  7. Yes ! That is what I was worried about. I live Deux Sevres and we had a frost a few days ago but it has been OK for about a week now. Maybe I will but some and keep them inside for a while. I was OK with all this in UK but here I am never sure if planting is earlier as  marginally warmer climate.  Leaderprice have some good offers on some bedding plants  10 for  2euros..99c.
  8. I have loads of Uk Rinner Beans growing inside at present in toilet roll insides (as recommended by Pads)  I grew them very well in UK but having read these threads I am now down in the dumps as I do like my Runners.  I will plant out and see how i get on but not too hopeful now.
  9. Thanks Tony

That sounds good as a lot of shoots there and it will mean a nice amount to re plant for next year. You always have the answers to any gardening queries that I have so you must be a very good gardener. Wish you lived next door as I always have questions and I sometimes feel a bit silly keep asking on LF.

  10. My Raspberry canes are all in leaf but I have noticed around the base of each one are shoots. The shoots appear to have the same leaf on them so what do I do ?  Let them coninue to grow or should they be removed. They are around every cane and are growing very well and I do not want to dig them up if this is the norm. I have never grown fruit bushes before and I have checked my gardening book but it does not mention this.

  11. I agree with you Cooperlola, We enter thsi world with nothing and we leave with nothing and the only ones I worship are my children and my granchildren and stuff the rest.  I find it obcene to put anyone on a pedastal as we are all important in our own way and being born privalaged is no reason to think that anyone is better than the rest. I admire my youngest son who has fought in the armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan  and so I feel he has earned my respect..
  12. I have just read a thread on "angloinfo poiture charente" in the pet section and it is so awful. If anyone can log on it comes under the thread unspeakable cruelty and maybe some LF members may have a solution to it as the lady who started the thread is having no luck at all.
  13. Hello Meg

No need to panic at the moment as I still have some English cheddar in my freezer. Purchased I may add for  OH  as he is not a lover of anything other than his boring old cheddar...a right stick in the mud.    I have to make him steak and kidney pies and pasties (we lived in Cornwall )  I just love all the French cheese and could happily live on them.

  14. Go for it Frenchie !!! My eldest daught had her fourth baby last year at the age of  41  and he is absolutely gorgeous and she said although she has has very little sleep for  the last 9 months he is worth it.Her eldest daughter is 21 and she married when the baby was  7 months old so my daughter had a baby and her eldest marry all in the same year  How wonderful is that !!!!!.
  15. Leader Price...a small ring pull tin called Haricot Blanc a la Tomate....OH really enjoyed them and just added a dash of ketchup as he likes a stronger taste. I also bought a tub of Taramasalata which I am enjoying for lunch on crackers.  Sorry to all who think I am sad for wanting the occasional tin of baked beans.

  16. More good suggestions...thanks. While we were in a Brico shop yesterday I noticed plants for sale, tomato, peppers and many others but surely it is a bit early to put plants ? I know last year I did not plant toms until a lot later.

  17. Thank you all so much for your replies and great ideas and I will certainly have a go in buckets and anything else I can find hanging around...why did I not think of that  ?   Dragonrouge, if you are growing Jersey spuds please tell me where you live and I will be round for a meal as I just love them. Many years ago I lived in Portsmouth and I used to go to where they unloaded them and they would always "drop" a bag. It would split open and we were ready with our bags and could fill them very quickly.  I planted a lot of veggies last year but lost a lot due to the wet weather but I will persevere.
  18. Hello all you experts out there  !!!!!  I have found a packet of  carrot seeds bought in UK two years ago and passed the sale by date. Would I be wasting my time planting and sitting waiting for them to grow ? Also, the pack contains lettuce, spring onion, and radish seeds as well and as it was cheap I don't mind too much if I have to bin them.
