  1. My lovely  13 year old Cocker Spaniel lady is having a big operation on Thursday as she has Tumors and one is blocking her ear. I am so worried as she has to have a general anesthetic and her age is a problem.  I know you will all be thinking of her and I will let you all know how she fares.
  2.  I must admit my lettuce, onions, carrots and even English runner beans are all doing well and the fruit is amazing, just my poor tomatoe  and my plum trees so far.  We have already halved the veg plot, mainly as just the two of us and there is a limit how much we needed. Even now I still give quite a bit away but I love growing it all, backbreaking at times but worth it.
  3. I am off out today to get some Blight spray and I may well buy more plants and spray them once in the ground as well as the ground around them as suggested by a friend of mine in UK who grows veggies all the time. I will keep you all posted.
  4. last year we lost 21 plants to the dreaded Blight so this year I made sure I planted quite a way from the pervious years crop. Friends of ours have grown tomatoes in pots and they are great with little tomatoes on them already.  I will buy some more and see what happens but it is very disheartening. I know people scream NO NO NO  when slug pellets are mentioned but I may well resort to that if any more lettuce get attacked.  I have tried crushed egg shells but to no avail, I think the perishers have got used to that idea. The toms seemed to perish so quickly though as I only put healthy plants in a few days ago. I put on some gloves and picked all the diseased leaves off and burnt them so I will see if any survive but not too hopeful. Sometimes I think it is cheaper to buy toms in SuperU and a lot less stessful.

  5. My tomato plants, that went in four days ago and were very strong healthy plants, have all shrivelled up, my lettuce plants are being eaten big time and some have disappeared altoghter and my plum tree leaves are curling up and going wrinkly as well. What else can go wrong and after all my hard work I could scream. The only things that have gone mad are the strawberries and I must have picked at least 20lb by now, could be the wood ash I put around them at the begining of the year, Rhubarb not too bad either.
  6. Have a lovely time !!!!! We will try although there will be twelve of us for one week of the three that they are here as her sister and family in UK are coming here as well so we can all be together. Every man for himself I think.
  7. Our daughter and family are arriving late July and as they live mid west America they obviousy would love to go to a beach here. Can anyone suggest any quiet beaches close to La Rochelle that would be nice for the children.  We are not too far from La Rochelle and it would make a nice day out for all of us.

  8. Thank you for your replies and I will forward them onto her. I know she is going to her village fete today and she was hoping there would be a stall selling local honey as it is a little Devon village surrounded by farms.

  9. My daughter-in -law in Uk is over six months pregnant and suffering badly with hay fever which she does every year. Due to her condition there is very little she can take to releive the sneezing and runny sore eyes. She enquired in a Herbal Remedy Shop and all they could suggest was trying LOCALLY made honey, made in the area where she lives to be sure of the same pollen. Has anyone ever heard of this before or can anyone come up with any suggestions as she is really suffering at this time.
  10. Hello Richard T

Our son and his wife have a Collie X and such an easy breed to train as highly intelligent and they had him as a puppy. He very quickly became house trained, excellent with the children and he does not have an enormous appetite. We have had many types of dogs over the years and although we adore Boxers I would not suggest that breed as the are very demanding and hate being left on their own and can be very destructive with boredom. At present we have a very, very old Cocker Spaniel lady and a French rescue Labrador who has the constant desire to do a runner but fortunately cannot get out of our garden. If vet bills and care of a dog is no problem then I would say to your son go for it as so many dogs needing a loving home here in France. Apart from Christine Animal who always has dogs for rehoming the Phoenix rescue are always looking for new homes for their many dogs and at present have some really lovely dogs. Friends of ours took a dog from them and he is adorable and so eternally grateful for a loving home and will not let them out of his sight. Hope this helps you and your son to try to make a decision on what breed would be best.

  11. I also find it very strange that you have had visits from these people. In the woods next to our house there are wild cats and they are having kittens continously and are frequently foraging in our bins. We try not to fed them as we do not want to encourage them but it is heartbreaking to see them at times.
  12. I was going tosuggest you checked your house insurance as last year we had a leak and we went contacted our agent. He called the following day and OK'd the repair but our company would only pay for the investigating work and reinstating our the work. We had to pay for the actual repair work which fortunately was purely replacing the section of pipe that was the problem. and the chap we used only charged us 50 euros although he was at our property for about three hours. That would consitute a call out fee in UK for just stepping into the house.
  13. This a bit cheeky but I was wondering if anyone has some tennis racquets that they do not need anymore as we have family coming from USA and they love playing.  I live near Lezay in Deux Svres and do not mind driving a reasonable distance to collect. They are not expert players so condition is not paramount just to be able to whack it around. I do not really want the expense of buying new ones as we do not play and they do not need them in America.
  14. It was lovely reading your last thread...you are starting to remember the funny things he did and eventually, and it will take time, all the good memories will overtake the pain you are feeling now. I still cry for my lovely Boxer and miss him so much but we have our very, very old Cocker Spaniel lady 13 yrs. and we have a french  rescue Labrador and we love him dearly but oh how I miss my beloved Henry.  It has been two years now and we often sit and talk about the scatty things he did but bringing Murphy the rescue Lab into our home with all his funny little ways eased the pain. I know in time you may well have another dog and that one will have it's own character and charm and will get under your skin but your beloved boy will always have a certain part of your heart that no other dog will have.  Talk to us doggy lovers anytime you are feeling low as we are all here for you.
  15. Such sad, sad news and all animal lovers know what you are going through now and such a terrible shock for you as well.  We lost our beloved Boxer dog aged six years very suddenly just before we came to France and the condition was similar. It normally affects barrel chested animals and the stomach starts to rotate and affects other organs. Our vet said even if we had got him to the surgery it would have been unlikely that he would have survived as an operation has to be performed the moment the symtoms start and it is not immediately recognized as they appear to be just "off colour " for a while.  Please do not feel guilty as you were not to know and you know how loved he was and he knew that as well. My thoughts are with you.
  16. I will use all the advice given here and as I am a total novice at growing veggies and OH said he has to much to do in the house to help but will do all the hard graft..digging etc.  I have already runner beans and sweetcorn growing in toilet rolls and doing very well. Thee parsnip seeds have been on damp kitchen roll in a container for three days but nothing happening yet.
