  1. We live in Deux Sevres dept 79 and we chose here as in our research prior to moving to France it was stated that it was in a micro climate. I must admit that we did not get the dreadful storms that further south had a couple of weeks ago, we had rain and wind but nothing compared with the tales I have heard from some folk further south. Three days of sunny weather here and not too cold now although we had a few days early January when it was eight below freezing. Winter in France is winter, the same as in England but even here the summers are hot ( sometimes too hot for me ) We are in a rural area but only just over one hour from La Rochelle which is a stunning place, Cognac is only an hour away, Royan slightly further and all airports to go to UK are within a decent driving distance La Rochelle and Limoges being the closest. I agree with others, visit many areas before deciding as it is not just the weather as other things must meet your needs as well.
  2. Exactly Clair !!  I know my kids are not spending like mad as they all have children and some reduction in their outgoings only helps them in their monthly living expences. Utilities are still high in England as are the water bills so they are not out buying everything in sight.. Maybe it is the people who have been careful with their pennies over the years and now have some savings that are the ones who are now expected to salvage a failing economy.
  3. The Bankof England have just reduced the interest rate down to 1% so bad news for anyone who relies on the interest on savings to help their income. It seems to me that these reductions are not working and in previous reccessions the interest rates normally went up. How much lower are they prepared to go and will the banks pass this onto their customers. Even though a lot of folk in Englnd have noticed a dramatic drop in mortgage payments they are obviously not doing what the government want them to do and that is to spend, spend, spend.
  4. It is in the chilled section of my SuperU. It comes in quite a biggish box which for two of us is sometimes a bit of a waste as only a certain amount of cream two people can eat. Not much is required to whip enough for a sponge  etc. and once open it does have a consume date on it. So good idea if you have a friend who would want to share a cream experience.  [:)]
  5. My OH, a cricket fanatic, was almost in tears last night when he heard of this mans death. He watched the news this morning and was again upset as he heard no mention of his passing. We may have missed the report but we thought there would have been more considering the dreadful way he passed away.
  6. On our return to France after a three week break in England,  we arrived at the airport car park for the journey home. To my absolute horror I noticed the pasenger side window completely wide open, yes, I had forgotten  to wind it up on arriving at the airport three weeks previously. Oh my gosh I thought,  OH will murder me now when realises everything has gone but on opening the door EVERYTHING  was exactly how we left it. All CD's, Sat Nav system and lots of other items all still there. I could not believe it and maybe I am being unfair but I had to wonder if that would have been the same scenario if it had happened in an airport car park in England. Maybe, but I am inclined to think maybe not.
  7. My local supermarkets are SuperU and Intermarche so I will look for the spuds you have mentioned and fingers crossed next Sunday will be just fantastic. I have mastered the Yorkies OK it is just the roasties which let me down and we actually had lamb today....took out a second mortgage  LOL  [:)][:)][:)]
  8. What spuds do I need to buy to get a decent roast potato. I have tried par boiling, not par boiling, taking our prior to serving and then putting them back into really hot oil but they always come out soggy. They ruin a good roast dinner and I am deperate for s crispy roast potato. I even resorted to doing " chip pan roast " but not the same is it. [:(][:(]
  9. I make corned beef and onion individual pasties aand make my own pastry. I always make a large batch at the same time making my meat pies and then freeze them all.  Plus I also make cheese and onion pasties, always handy for any vegetarian friends.
  10. I could never eat any meat unless it was cooked to almost singed. Many a time I have been given meat that was not quite cooked even though I asked for it to be well done. I just leave it on the side of my plate but I must admit we do not eat out that often for that reason. I can never get the waiters here in France to understand that well done does not mean burnt on the outside but still red in the centre.
