  1. Like you Lisleoise I feel very comfortable when the temp is 28, so here yesterday was bliss! Not so good today, though, and like you I feel sorry for those further north and in parts of Scotland, with such a wet summer. Back to the Gard at the weekend, so hoping for continued blue skies and sunshine there!

  2. Judith, you probably have been accepted, if you feel you have! Maybe if a car belonging to a French neighbour had parked in that spot at that time, their car would have suffered. We hear that cars parked outside our apartment block were damaged recently, and they were a mixture of very ordinary French cars and a couple of  foreign cars - just hazard!

  3. The restaurant I mentioned doesn't make a fortune from tourists, Benjamin. Of course they get a lot in, but I guess half of their customers are locals, including the people who run the big posh hotel in town. While they are open in winter locals tend to be the only customers. They did reduce some prices in the VAT cut, unlike many others. We can't afford to eat there every week, but we're there when we can.

  4. Our favourite which will close for 4 months, and did the same last year. They are very busy all through the summer, just a husband and wife team and a waitress - two in high season. They went travelling last winter, then had a big re-opening in March; local wine growers came and dispensed free wine, and lots of lovely nibbles were provided. We didn't need dinner that night! The place was packed out, and put them back on the map in a big way! It's such a comfortable place to visit, all very smiley; the food doesn't change a lot, but is very good, with a good wine list. We really miss it during the winter.

  5. Does anyone know if trees are generally protected by law, as I've been told? Trees in the grounds of our apartment are annoying some of the residents, who want to have a lot of work done, involving cutting down some and cutting back others. This is because they say it won't cost much extra to have a lot of work done in one visit from the tree people. The alternative would be to have some work done now and more cutting back in the future.

    Thanks, Jo

  6. Wendy, we have a fairly new one bedroom apartment in France and spend time there on and off throughout the year, making 6 months in total. We took electricity readings, as we were also paying by direct debit and wanted some idea of costs in case a large bill arrived in July.

There are just two of us, with a couple of visitors now and again, usually in autumn and spring.

We recorded units used, and I now know through this forum that 1 unit = 1 KWH.

We only have electricity, so that is all energy used. We have a washer/drier, hob and oven, heating, fridge, dishwasher, kettle, computer, plus hot water and lighting. We spend a lot of time there in the winter, and it was very cold even with what is supposed to be good insulation. So the 3 electric fires were used a lot, plus 2 fan heaters on very cold evenings. In the summer we used a couple of fans at times in the evenings, over about 3 weeks before we retreated to UK.

With the extra EDF wanted over and above our direct debits we reckon we've paid about 350 euros for the year. Strangely, EDF have left the direct debit at the same level for next year, despite us underpaying. We are on normal tariff with a 6kW supply; we started out on heures creuses for the first few months, before we realised and changed.

Your place is probably a lot bigger than ours, also your pattern of use may be a lot different. Most of our time there is in autumn, winter and spring, with just a short time in summer. But I hope that helps with your bill figuring.

  7. No idea about in France. But in my 'RHS Encyclopedia of Gardening' the section on climbers says: 'It is possible to grow more rampant climbers such as Wisteria species. Their growth will be checked, but severe pruning will be required. Regular repotting will also be needed to keep them healthy.'

Gardian's pruning sounds good, also the amount of water; they need lots in pots in the south of England, so much more in France. Training the main stems horizontally instead of vertically apparently improves flowering.

  8. Mrs Trunk might not have known it was a clean sock - it could have been lurking in a shoe for a while.

I would certainly pick up anything from the floor, be it socks or whatever, providing the arthritis wasn't too bad. My husband also picks up anything from the floor. Equal partnership, I'd say!

I think it's down to mothers and wives to instill such good habits in boys and men. My DIL thinks we did a very good job on training her husband, as does our other son's partner.
