1. You're not the only one. Winds from the south bringing sand from the Sahara in the atmosphere, a lot of thick cloud about and having an incorrect dish size (even though you may think you have the right size) are more likely to be the cause. Most with 130cm dishes down here have lost a lot of channels. My 150cm dish is a lot better with only 5US and ITVHD suffering from a bit of pixelation.

Does this help JC???

This have changed and continue to change Idun. Bit like computers, turn you back for a minute and there is a new one or something changes.

Only valid if you were registered as an Auto Entrepreneur. If you were a Micro BIC or any other form of 'reel' then that link woud not be applicable.

3. There is no 'state pension' as such in France. If you joined the correct 'chambers' for your profession then you would have paid into a scheme recognised by them. These schemes are run by the companies that typically run the mutuals as well so it won't be a lump payment but a specific payment to a specific source. Every year you will receive a statement showing how much you have put in and what your entitlement will be when you retire at the pre determined age because the age of retirement varies depending on what you do for a living. In short if you ain't had a statement then you have nothing. You can buy the way buy up to 7 years worth of UK state pension stamps if you are short on your existing stamps under the new UK state pension scheme and it ain't much either.
4. If and when the EU finally decides on quotas it will be interesting to see how France will place these refugees. Europe has a big modern(ish) history of refugees what with WW1 and 2 especially and there are still many alive that remember and possibly were one at some time or another. Germany I believe feels it has a bigger than most responsibility because it has been engraved on its soul that it caused the refugee problem during WW2 and that its military had no qualms about shooting them to cause mass panic as part of its military campaign. The one thing I am noticing is that whilst many have a great sympathy for these current refugees it is becoming a NIMBY problem (I wonder what the French version of NIMBY is), touch of great, let them come but don't put them in my city/town or village. I read somewhere somebody saying that there are thousands of empty homes in France that could be used but many of these homes have been empty for years and years and you wouldn't even put farm animals in many of them. I wish I knew of or had an answer to this terrible problem. Something that also seems to have slipped by and was referred to in the Charlie Hebdo cartoon that one member didn't understand is that many of these refugees from Syria are actually Christian who are persecuted in general within the Middle East. Actually I watched a report about the refugees at the Hungarian border and the ones turned away during the vetting of the first group who were Pakistani christians who had been persecuted in Pakistan. I also disagree with people saying this is an EU problem, it is not, it is a world problem and world humanity needs to work as one to resolve the problem.

You might be right but rather you then me on that one Quillan, I choose my battles carefully.

Its one thing not paying the social charges on UK income if you have already been taxed on it and maybe the legislation had not considered the S1 loophole but to not pay social charges on French income when it has already had an abattement of 71%...................

Quand même! Il ne faut pas deconner [:P]
Sorry I am not with you. I don't have a UK income although Mrs Q does and that is on our French tax form. She got her S1 last hear as did I on the back of hers. I am not the only one asking this question if you look back through the posts (Francophile). Seems to me that all you can do is ask the question and the answer will either be a yes or a no. If you think it could be opening a 'can of worms' then could you explain for me please what can exactly it could be opening.

6. Can I please verify that I understand correctly.

If you have an S1 then you should not be paying any CSG, CRDS and Prel Soc Cont add Prel Sol (whatever that is) regardless of if your income is from the UK or France and specifically if you are tax registered as a Microbic regime (in my case running as a B&B)? If this is correct and you have paid for a whole year but your S1 was registered in France from June 2014 can you claim a rebate on a pro-rata basis? If the latter is correct how do you go about claiming?

7. All our windows have pull down fly screens and the mesh is getting a bit damaged through age and needs replacing. I looked at replacing the whole units but to fit my windows the half decent ones seem quite expensive. I notice you can buy the mesh "off the roll" and I wondered if anyone has actuall "re meshed" one of these units. I have not taken the roller apart on one so I don't know how that top end is fixed yet but the fixing for the bottom seems to have some round plastic "glued or welded" along the edge which then slides into a slot on the metal bottom that slides up and down. Obviously as this is glued or welded onto the mesh it is a bit difficult to duplicate at home so I wondered if you can buy a replacement bit that you can stick to the bottom of the mesh or somebody has come up with an alternative method of attaching the mesh to the pull down bit?

How some of you do tourist rentals all year round cooking breakfasts and evening meals is beyond me, chapeau to you, rather you than me.
So would I. The last thing I cooked for a guests breakfast was a boiled egg about six weeks ago and I made such a cockup of that they never asked again. [;-)]

Didn't realise you were washing and drying in machines, just washing and freshining up in the drier I thought. Having researched your machines with the idea of buying them I worked out that although quicker the electricity costs would be much higher than the ones I use now. During the summer only the towels go in the dryer for about 10 mins a room just to 'fluff' them up.

How did you get on with the recomended gadgets by the way, the windows cleaner and steamer, are you happy with them?

We have always used Ajax Power Shower to clean the showers (strangley enough [;-)] ) but experimented with the Aldi one and I have to say pretty good they are to. Will be using theirs in future because they are much cheaper, just as good and leave a nice smell.

9. There is a cheeky way round that and getting permission if your not replacing an existing one like for like. Simply make it so it is not attached to the house, is bolted together and keep it under 25m2. It then is classed as a temporary/demountable structure, it can be taken down at any time. If you look at my website and the terrace I constructed thats how I got round asking for any permisson. I even got the mayor to come and have a look just in case and he was happy enough. If of course you are replacing like for like, or near enough that you have to look hard to see the difference from the original and it is on the same footprint then just build it.
10. Do a search on Brico Depot, find the one nearest you by entering your postcode and have a look at "menuiserie - fenetres - fenetres bois haute isolation". Click on the window and a list of sizes will pop up and you can browse through them.
11. "Auvent de Terrace" seems to be the thing although generally they do not have a tiled room, mainly plastic. Another thing you could look at is a "Pavillon" which is normally a free standing unit made of wood with a tiled roof. Joint together the two and perhaps a "Pavillon de Terrace" might be what your looking for although formwhat you described I can't find anything like what you want. I think the latter is the description you want along with a uilder to make it for you.

That said I did find this http://www.bosset-batiments.com/auvents.php which perhaps could be adapted.

12. I think I am right on this, as I understand it the purchaser is the one who needs to get it fixed and not the seller. That being the case and your seller offering to pay 50% I would grab it before he/she works out they don't actually have to pay you a cent. Something you might like to check however is if there is a sewer near you. Anyone buying my place would have the same problem as you but a check at the mayors office shows a sewer pipe 15m from my property. Even given that they would have to install a macerator and lift pump it would work out cheaper to connect it to the sewer than rebuild/fix the fosse.
13. Thats funny because I have not noticed anything on the French side that is actually working. Loads of little custom sheds but nobody there because the French don't give a toss. Thats why we have British customs on the French side to stop people leaving France for the UK who shouldn't be going there. Anyway it is pedantic but it does stop a lot of illegal immigrants trying to get into the UK. The problem the Brits have is many are so stupid they cannot tell the difference between an EU migrant,  non EU immigrant and a refugee. The irony of it is many Brits believe the UK always does what the EU tells it to yet the UK refused to accept the right to live and work in an EU country into it's own legislation. Had it done so then those EU migrants with no jobs would be legally thrown out as per EU legislation.

14. I know we are getting a bit off subject although I guess it was only a matter of time before this discussion started to take place here but I would like to know how any EU country is going to protect us against members of ISIS sneaking in under the pretence of being a refugee? I actually agree with Cameron on the way he is going to deal with this. I know he was a bit slow off the starting grid compared to Germany etc but checking people out in the camps and then letting them travel to the UK as refugees on proper transport must be better than how it is going at the moment. When those at Calais see/hear this happening they might then understand they don't stand a chance of getting into the UK and go to Germany instead. I do love the DM reader comments mind, complaining about no border controls and how all these people are getting into the UK. They don't seem to understand that the reason we have these people at Calais is because we do have border controls in the UK and they can't get through them.
15.
A lot of empty churches, too. A certain irony there.
Tony Blairs a good Catholic as well as an ex special peace envoy to the middle east (that didn't go to well did it) and what with him and his wife being 'big' on the human rights stuff he could put a few up in his unused properties. On the other hand I see Bob Geldolf has offered to put a couple (literally) up in his two houses. Seen the size of his houses, he could take a couple of hundred.

16. I remember last year both The Guardian and the DM were having a rant about, unusually, the same thing, the number of massive, multi million pound mansions in and around London that were owned by Arabs as a way round paying tax and that most had not been lived in for years. Perhaps they could be turned over to these refugees. I mean as they are owned by arabs and many of the refugees are arabs you would think the owners would be happy to help out their own. While we are at it as the US in the main has bombed the shite out of these people while arming the oposition so they might like to send a few cruise ships over to pick up a few hundred thousand giving them asylum in America. I guess of course that won't happen so the US will yet again get away with killing innocent civilians leaving Europe to clean up the mess afterwards.
17. I heard a rumour that Elvis is alive and living in Croydon. [;-)]

Seriously if my French was up to it and I had a second home in France I would have a search on the Internet unless of course the source of the rumour is very well known to you and has a proven track record of being right 99.9% of the time.

Meanwhile a google of "Du logement des réfugiés en résidences secondaires" brings up increasing taxe d'habitation from 20 to 40% in places like Nice but little else. Somebody else might do better at searching than my feeble attempt.

18. I was watching BBC Breakfast this morning and as Chancer pointed out there are loads of scam to get hold of your money. We used to have phishing via emails but these are quite amateur compared to the phone ones. They know what bank you're with and your name for a start, they will display the phone number that is on the back of your debit/credit card for emergency use (always made me laugh that, if your card is lost or stolen call the number on the back of the card!), they actually ask you to check this against the caller display so you know it is them calling. The simple answer to this regardless of being in France, UK or anywhere else, is to call them back using the number from your statement. Don't think these are African or eastern Europeans because the voices I heard were distinctly Scottish and well educated. The woman they interviewed who got scammed by this type of call was middle class and educated so don't think people are stupid to fall for this. By the way she got her money back eventually but that was because her son had installed a system that recorded every call to try and protect his mother against these types of fraud.
