Dont know if its any help but met some French guys at Lansdowne Rd last year - they were heading to St Jean d'Angely (30) km from Cognac)for a veterans rugby festival around Easter. The St Jean rugby site is http://www.projetisweb.com/raca/accueil.htm

There is a Brocante in Landes on the road to Surgeres north of St Jean d'Angely. Its on the left as you enter the village - open every day except Monday unless I am mistaken. Stuffed full of old furniture.  

Does anyone know if Transmanche will add a surcharge if you fail to return in the same day on their Newhaven - Dieppe service? Their terms and conditions dont specify this but other carriers claim they will charge your credit card  for the (extra) cost of a single trip if you fail to return

Can anyone advise - I am in the process of opening my French bank account - in the mean time I paid my first EDF bill by bank draft issued by my Irish bank. Got my second bill but now the bank are no longer issuing drafts drawn on French banks due to problems people have had presenting them. EDF keep on telling me to pay via the internet which would be fine if my account was open. Can I pay using a credit card? How long before they cut people off for non payment? Any advice would be appreciated.
