  1. Not quite. It is now an Archant image by virtue it is being displayed on an Archant site (LF). The original is attributed to 'Surrey Life' from an article relating to her and her husbands acquisition of a redundant Purley post office. The original owners retired to Portugal following advice on overseas property purchase from none other than Laura Hamilton.

  2. I would hazard a guess that it is before fixed charges and TVA as the correspondence appears to state that you used the equivalent of €1.20 of electricity per day and not that the amount of electricity used per day cost you €1.20. I might be splitting hairs here but hey, I'm not an EDF mind reader.

As to a comparison with others, apples and oranges I'm afraid.

  3. From an article in yesterdays Telegraph:

'One regional newspaper Le Populaire du Centre even timed how long it

took one young female journalist to complete a round of morning bises on both cheeks and found that over a year it amounted to three working days'.

Couple that tradition with that other tradition of the 2 hour lunch and it's easy to understand why France is economically stunted.

  4. I think the fact that the NHS is the worlds 4th largest employer, pipped only by United States Department of Defense, Chinese People's Liberation Army and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. highlights its totally unwieldy status for the number of the people it is required to serve and has,in effect, become unmanageable.

Re-engineering the organisation will involve massive abrupt and painful

change, because it is so difficult to have a discernible impact on such a

large blob from evolutionary policy tweaks.

Throwing more money at the NHS (known apparently as 'investing much more

in the NHS') will solve nothing. It simply postpones the day when the UK

will have to face up to the unpalatable truth that the NHS cannot continue as

is because they as a nation cannot afford it in its present form.

  5. Try Googling - "Problem with on/off switch on dishwasher (make and model no.)". You'll more than likely find your not the first to have suffered this issue and will possibly find forums with some suggestions on how to rectify the problem or advice on what steps to take.

  6. You will only require dividend paperwork if they decide to audit your return.

To obtain the value of your dividend income for declaration on the annual tax form do a search for:

    (Company name/ticker) historical dividend payment.

  7. Stick an egg white in the system.  Because of the difference between system pressure and atmosphric pressure, when the egg white poaches, it will be drawn to any leakes within the system and subsequently seal them.  I know it works. I did it once decades ago before all these fancy products appeared on the market.
  8. As a French resident, I've never had the desire or felt the need to exist in what can only be described as a hermatically sealed francophile bubble. Of course we purchase everyday things as required in France However, I accept that I live in a globalized world and therefore it is not beyond the realms of possibility that it may be beneficial for me to source goods or materials from other than French sources. If I elect to purchase my potatoes from Idaho, then so be it as that is my choice. I can better utilise my time than by examining every product for that magical fabrique en france label that some seem to crave.

No doubt immediately on arrival in France those that detract would have been busy filling out their French citizen application forms during the advertising breaks of Eastenders.

So €4.99 locally or €32.90 delivered from the UK (paint cost €20.90) I wont be doing myself favors like that.

And my €5 tin has been made in Germany and delivered from Holland!

As you say, each to his own.

Fortunately cost isn't an issue for me but quality most certainly is.

I have used Lidl emulsion in my garages, abris and summer kitchen and am satisfied with the results. However, throughout the house I am rather more discerning. Apart from Lidl I know absolutely jack sh*t about French paint, I've never used it. Personally I don't have the time, the inclination or the will to sample different French paints to determine if they have the quality I require. There are numerous suppliers able to deliver paints and materials I have an awareness of and to date am satisfied with quality wise. All my internal woodwork is covered in oil based eggshell (UK brands) and walls in matt emulsion (UK Brands) and as for painting internal beams in some sort of arty/farty paint system....never, perish the thought. Professionally cleaned and 3 coats of Sikkens Cetol TSI Satin Plus. All my choice.
