This is like the selling eggs thread.[blink]
This type of thing goes on all over France, (and everywhere else for that matter), why do people want to try and make a big deal out of it? I can't say that it ever bothered me when I was working here if other people were "helping each other" or even if people were working on the black and I freely admit to using such arrangements myself, it may not be strictly legal but it often makes sense.[;-)]

OK, obviously not everyone sells excess eggs, not everyone keeps hens, but none the less it is common practise for people to sell excess eggs and all manner of other things "au black" and frankly no one is interested if it's pocket money. It's the Countryside for goodness sake, it's what people do, the old bloke that flogs veg round his hamlet etc etc. and so it goes on...
.....BUT of course it isn't strictly within the letter of the law even if the Gendarmes buy some.[:D]

I assume you are a very experienced bird watcher crazyfrog, in which case you will know how rare it is in France even in it's primary location of Haute Pyrenées. As you will know it's very easy to confuse with the Middle spotted woodpecker or even the Greater spotted woodpecker for someone inexperienced if not well observed.
In French it's called Pic à dos blanc and I hope that you recorded it with you local French Association, which was the primary purpose of my original post - to encourage people to assist with the local and National records, especially people with your knowledge.

but there are a lot of different types, yours is probably a species that uses decaying moist vegetation by the sounds of it, looking at the wing pattern plus size would be a good place to start.

I think you are misreading the information - you only need a Siret if you are selling honey, colonies or queens.
It's a big step backwards but of course people will still sell a bit of honey "locally" without anyone taking too much notice, just like everything else. Frankly I doubt that your Mairie or local impots will even be aware of the changes out in the sticks, it's hardly a high profile activity.
Other registrations are with DSV and MSA if you are being professional or semi professional.

Needless to say I do contact offenders wherever they are in the world and there are procedures that can be used if they don't remove the offending photos or text, but I can't for the life of me see why that should prevent me from creating a post on the subject, but thanks for your useful input on the subject.

From time to time I find photos and huge chunks of text, (sometimes an entire page) copied onto someone else's web site, forum or blog without having had the common decency to either ask first or give a credit and a back link to our original page / website, never mind the fact that copyright is by default.
As a not for profit Association we find this tiresome to say the least.
Whether or not any readers of this forum are guilty of this type of behaviour I neither know nor care, but if that should be the case or if as a visitor to this forum you read this, please consider first the implications of such behaviour.

If this sound is a current situation it isn't Loir or Lérot, they are nicely tucked up and asleep for the winter.
Without any vocals to help identification it could be a Stone Marten, or it could even be an Owl depending on the space available.
Rats and squirrels are active in the day as well as night.

The legs are cut from the living frog and the still living body with the head are simply caste aside to slowly die, often in huge heaps. Also you should consider that these days nearly all the frogs legs are imported from China and the far east, all in all a fairly disgusting process.

Well is sounds as though you did the right thing, maybe not the flies, but the maggots are good, as is small pieces of chopped worm. Water should not be given but the food should be dipped in water, this provides ample fluid, especially for a baby bird as they don't drink.
Depending on the species of bird a variable number of chicks die anyway before leaving the nest, with some species this is as high as 50% so it's always a chance that the one that died would have done so anyway.

It's also possibly even more difficult in French, AFAIK everything is based on Chant, Chanteur, Chantent etc.or Cri in the case of birds such as Buzzards.
Has that sufficiently muddied the waters?

The answer to your question Steve "I take the time to register, get insurance, pay my contributions etc - why cant he?" is probably because he is "a retired Brit" and who in their right mind if retired would register for doing a bit here and there with all the ramifications that involves?
What would the legal position be in France? That's the point of this thread Swissie, all these things are strictly speaking illegal in France.
