1. Thank you very much , Norman H. Tomorrow a French man has kindly offered to write to Dell, he  seems to be comfortable with computers. The problems hopefully will show itself so he can write to dell  as he sees it rather than me trying to explain, but just in case its a disaster I might hold you to your kind offer. He laughed when I explained French Dell would only communicate in French , he says "normal, in Spain, Holland , Italy , Gemany, they all speak English but in France they speak only French, with this he puffed his chest with pride, and oh, what a smile.[:D] daft but I could understand where he was coming from, err, if you know what I mean.[8-)]

  2. Dell UK appears to have persuaded Dell France to email me , they asked for an overview of situation. I replied in English and appologised for not  being able to speak French -[8-)] nice reply in English which said he only understood a little English and therefore all explanation /communications would have to be in French - Yikes [:$] would anyone please be prepared to lend a hand and translate the explanation he is requesting. [:D]Pleeeeeze

      8th paragraph down

Some European finance ministers claim that the "opaque environment" of

offshore finance - particularly hedge funds - contributed to reckless

behaviour and, ultimately, the current crisis. President Nicolas

Sarkozy of France is among those questioning whether, at a time of

taxpayer-funded bail-outs, banks should even be allowed to operate in

    tax havens.

  4. Sorry to ask but I have just spent 1hr trawling through old post to get proof for people that were delighted to be able to explain to me " there is no need to register Uk car in France as long as it has French  Control Tec and French Insurance", I am convinced they are wrong and reading the many threads confirmed this but please , I need an official link French and  English would be great. They do seem genuine on their thoughts not the type to be jack the lad in avoiding for the sake of  its just that they think its the rule in not needing to register.

It puzzles me why the Insurance companies are not doing more (or perhaps I have it wrong and u dont ), I am sure our first Insurance company (6yrs ago!) on arrival in France said we have 3 months to register -which we did. Official link would be brill [:D]

  5. Hope this info might be of use to others - today they e mailed after I said I felt let down as shop in UK promised we were covered in France

Thank you for your email and I apologize for the frustration that you have been

    experiencing.

Based on the troubleshooting we have made on your computer,

we have confirmed that the camera on your system needs

    replacement.

However, allow me to inform you that we can only send a

service call request for the replacement in UK, Ireland and South Africa. Since

your system is still registered under UK service call request will only be

    available on this country.

If you are staying in France, an option for

you to get a service call request under your warranty is to transfer the

ownership of your system to France. Indeed, our technical support in France will

only be able to launch an In Warranty service call on your system once the

    transfer is complete.

For transfer of ownership, you may refer to this

    site:

[8-)] The next bit could be tricky talking to a French Dell-![+o(]

  6. Oooerr, what shall I do?? Spoke with dell UK see thread - no intergrated web cam , still under UK warranty . They have agreed its a disconnection within laptop. They suggest either return it to someone in UK , they will then collect it and fix it under warranty and check for any other issues. Or whilst in France contact Dell but I will have to pay for it being fixed as it does not have International Warrenty. I asked how much to take out International warrenty - £94 for 2 years but it would not cover the present issue!!. Decisions, decisions. What would you advise.?If I send it back to daughter in Cornwall then  to be collected by Dell could you advise a good courier service from France to Uk Please. Mrs MBK

  7. If it goes back to dell do I put passwords on system or what do I password protect or simply take off what few documents I have? Next question err will they lose my programms - photo shop etc etc.that are in?  What happens if they replace laptop will they ransfer all, so its the same set up. Has anyone sent laptop away to be fixed ? I wonder if I have to pay for postage as its only a few months old. They told me at PC World exeter that it would be under guarantee in France.mmmm fingers crossed. Weird- now the intergrated webcam is disabled the darn thing blinks on startup as if its in action yet device manager confirms its disabled - boggart's! have got inside!! Mrs MBK running scared now.

  8. Tandem_pilot, please tell me more of your ideas???? what it could be.

All was well with webcam, in fact it was excellent quality with Skype and messenger. Noticed  after first  month that when active it only needed slight movement of laptop for it to either freeze when in use , or the ****** avatar to spring into a life of its own , whatever was done to disable avatar- failed. So I removed the avatar prog. All well as long as laptop was not moved whislt webcam active. Then out of the blue it went from the system in device manager Icon for imaging device went. If USB webcam attached the icon then re appears showing its specific name - all is well.

Have even tried to reload all Intergrated web cam software with avatar, and yet again the damned avatar over rides all defaults- !! mystery! so had to delete avatar prog.

Then out of the blue it re appears  in imaging device "the inregrated webcam#2" when it does re appear it also ruins the intergrated microphone for eg when I have listened to skype test call back I hear an occasional sylabel of mine then only static. The only thing that makes me wonder if its software problem is how it likes to push itself back into the system should it re appear even though I have all applications to external webcam - but then I ask why when it does reappear it has no picture (No web cam found. Connect your webcam or check it properly connected )and no microphone when tested (only the static in playback). Also when name is back in device manager why also under LOCATION_ USB Root Hub Unknown device written in bold should appear. Oh, and of course when it dings into life with a blue flash of the webcam I then get the bubble that says -One of the USB devices attached to the computer has malfunctioned & windows does not recognise it.

I have spent hrs searching on web and found others to have had similar probs but never a solution.

Please , anyone, can you give me an idea what to try other then send it back to dell . I am 100% up to date on drivers and latest updates that dell reccomended.[+o(]

  9. Please any idea's. New in UK July this year. Intergrated webcam  in Inspiron 1720 was always sensitive- if it detected any movement in lap top it would switch camera on and off. It is now at the point of staying off 95% of the time . External web cam no problem . Have spoken with dell and done all that they asked = downloading new drivers etc. Now, if for no apparant reason it should come on - perhaps not through movement of laptop , then the microphone only has acute static. Yes, all defaults are correct etc, etc. This message USB not recognised, re connect , or replace. This is surely telling me the actual connection internally is adrift - I have downloaded the manual and it says to be exremely careful, u must be earthed etc .[:-))]  is it worth a look?Any opinions would be appreciated.Dell are now dragging their feet on next course of action! Up till now faultless in replying to emails .

  10.  I am trying to explain the situation of Carte vital etc simpley by printing off the superb info on French health issues, but the answer to "What is proof of residency"  I cant see, please can someone direct me to it. I did explain as far I was aware the proof of residency is from your income tax office, but I cant find the reference in "French health issues- info". Scenario being-- couple have been here for over 18 months, they have been led down the garden path by another English couple who are ducking and diving the authorities into keeping their heads down and not registering for Income Tax. As I see it having sadly followed bad advice they have missed the opportunity of being classed as a permanet resident if they had registered for income tax before Nov23 /07. Have I got this right?[8-)]

  11. Has anyone seen in shops the vacume packs that you put duvets and blankets into , then suck the air out with the hoover. JMKdirect .com has them but does not send overseas,I have found them in Lakeland but by the time u add on the postage they are not cheap, so, would prefer to buy them local has anyone spotted them in eg BUT, or conforama -?thank you

  12. I have searched and searched to find an answer, its not there! So, please does anyone know if whilst in the 1970's in the UK when every one with children got paid a subsidy/ allowance at the post office each week until the child reached 16yrs - that 16yrs in effect was a credit and went towards your pension (basic stamp paid) yes / no . I have had this said to me by a number of people that is how they understood the situation  . So, next question - if that is so, one child until 16yrs = E121 for a women because the minimum years of basic contribution is 10 - 11 years . [:D] Mrs MBK confused as ever [8-)]

  13.
we opened a Liveret A account yesterday with Credit Agricole, they are offering 5,60 till 31st of december, then 4% after that.
Belle, can u confirm or otherwise please, - when I went last week to make enquiries to the post office the lady explained to be carefull with the offer ar Credit Ag as the bit they offer over the4% of the Liveret A is a carrot and  is taxable, so I went for chat at Credit ag and again if I had understood yes, that little extra they offer is taxable- and has to be declared! Like u we are going to open one but will keep with the Post Office as we are trying to spread funds so as not to have all eggs in one basket .[:D] Mrs MBK
