  1. Hello

Same Pension as myself, we had worked out that we could just manage on that figure but it did not leave much spare cash. Now that the health Care has been changed we are not now going to make the move over on a permanent basis but we will keep the Cottage for holidays.

We were not intending to work in France as I retired from work in Dec 2000 ( 49yrs) and Carole was going to stop teaching, hey ho such is life.

Carole's mum will need looking after very soon so we are buying a larger house and have seen a nice one near Rothbury Northumberland so a good compromise.

Best wishes on whatever you decide

    Shane, Carole and Kai

  2. We have seen plenty of Water Snakes down in the River Gardon in the Gard, I do not think they are poisonous but if cornered would be capable of giving a nasty bite. We see Adders/Vipers from time to time in our garden and Wood Shed in France, on entering making some noise and having a big stick helps the mind.

  3. We have had our little place in the Correze for about 7 years and love the area even with the iffy weather it thows up at you.  One Easter we had snow and ice and in Winter the temperature can go down to minus 10, and when we got the keys for the first time the inside toilet was frozen solid and took 3 days to thaw out. (insulation has now helped)

BUT the people, scenery, food well everything about the place is to our liking and is well worth a punt.  We go walking in the woods and hardly see another person although we meet up with loads of wildlife and at the right time collect Chestnuts by the bag full.

We feel safe and secure whether we are in the confines of our place or out and about including late at night,  it has that air of old world charm which seems to be all too rare in the UK, mind you up here in Northumberland we are also very fortunate as it is Englands best kept secret.

Wherever you opt for enjoy France as it will give enjoyment back with interest.

  4. You have just reminded me.  Our P & O Ferry out of Hull on 27th December was delayed for over 12 hours and during this time only the Emergency Lighting was availavle. Before the official mention of this electrical fault an earlier message was relayed that if in the case of an electrical breakdown not use the lifts.  I thought this strange at the time and the lifts were taped off.  I think they knew well before and were keeping quiet.
  5. Last year we had a P & O Season Ticket for Hull crossings to Zeebrugge which we thought was good value and for an extra £45 each way you could

upgrade to the large family room with mini bar tv etc.  This has now risen to £80 so not so good.  DFDS for this year £598 for us gulp, gulp. We have

decided on the Tunnel and have got return fares for Easter and Summer at £98.  The downside is we live just north of Newcastle, all that driving.

By the way each leg cost us £120 as we booked 5 single crossings which suited our needs you can also book 5 return journeys with them, ( last year who knows about

this year) and all have to be taken within a 12 month period.

Best of luck with finding the best deals.

  6. We encounter the same,  if we say bonjour the locals say bonsoir, but when we say bonsoir they say bonjour. It is great when we say hello we are waiting with baited breath for their reply. But how do they react in the UK - Eh up, Okay, morning, Good day, Alright, Fine thanks, Champion, Top of the morning (arch) and well there are loads more especially local greetings. It is all good fun, at least in the main people actually greet you in the street in France over here it is hit and miss.

  7. As said on the previous posts get there early.  Take some seats, a brolly and plenty to drink, find a nice spot and take in the atmosphere it is electric.  You wait for ages for a fleeting glimpse but it will be worth the time and effort.

We are going to see that stage - driving over for the day,  look out for a burgundy coloured Mazda Bongo.

  8. We are in the Correze and have found a neighbour who will cut the grass prior to our arrival, we just email our direct neighbour and they get him to come along. He works for the local Marie and gives us a bill every so often keeping everything legal, he does our work in his own time. I know from some other people that the companies that advertise can be a bit expensive, or so it seems to us.

Hope you can source someone similar.

  9. I do hope that for your sake that the neighbours have not got " grazing rights " from a previous arrangement. As to the fencing issue just say you have young children visiting and you need to ensure their safety, you are also thinking of getting some chickens and they will have to be securely kept within your boundaries.

In the UK if a neighbours child was playing in your unfenced wood and got injured there would be a claim heading your way.

Best of luck whatever you decide.

  10. A couple of yeas ago we were intending to rent out and have a year out in France but  it did not work out.  The agent was going to take 15% we had to apply to our Mortguage provider to ask permission to rent out the property.   The  gas fire and cooker had to be checked out and get issued with a Safety Certificate by a  registered Corgi  fitter.  We had to change the House Insurance to cover for  Rentals and  anything

you do leave inside the house has to have the Kite mark safety labels for fire etc.  We are moving  out in 2008  hopefully.

  11. In our little village of Salon la Tour we can have a 5 course lunch with table wine for 11 euro and it is very good. We are staying at the Municipal Campsite in Archiac for 1 week in the Summer does anyone know of good food to be had in this area ?  We are having a look around for a suitable property in this region as the one we already have is too small for a full time move.

    Thanks Higgy

  13. You can book a Season Ticket with P & O Hull this can be for 5 return trips or 5 singles they have to be within a 12 month period. We needed the single trips as we use DFDS North Shields on the out route.(due to work and times)

For our 5 singles it was £525 inc a Premier Cabin we also have a 2.10mt high Mazda, we upgrade to a Family room which includes coffee fruit a quite well stocked mini bar for free, a tv.  We opt for the 4 berth. Prices to change in 2008. The upgrade is £45 per trip but we find the extra space great for out young daughter.

Hope this helps, we thought it was a good deal .

  14. We use P & O from Hull and they leave on time sometimes earlier, the odd time you have to wait your turn in the lock in order to dock but overall we like them.  We have booked a Season Ticket with them so now get a discounted price, this gets you a larger inside cabin but for an extra £45 each way gets you a Family Room with coffee fruit and a reasonable free mini bar.
