  1. Hi Deenie

I think you will struggle.  You would be better to switch to handball, it is big over here and there are lots of clubs in the Vienne and they have big tournaments in Poitiers.  I'm sure a skilled netball player  could make the switch, think of smaller balls and larger nets.

  2. Hmm, Chris is the expert but grass snakes do have yellow stripes around the neck but more of a collar shape than an adder I believe, don't think that they are agressive though either.  It is breeding season so perhaps they are all a bit feisty this time of year.

    EDIT

Main difference I believe is the head shape, if it was pointed like a > then I think that is a adder/viper type, if it is small and rounded then not.

  3. Hi

As I understand it it's all to do with whether you can secure the pool, so for an in ground you need the required fencing or security cover etc. so that you can make in inaccessible.  For above ground you need to be able to remove steps or stop access to the pool or deck in your case, we are planning an above ground and are looking into it now, we intend to have a deck but will make sure the steps to it can be secured., access from all the other sides is obviously restricted due to the nature of it being above the ground.  I also understand that if you make any ground works to partially put the pool into the ground it becomes considered in ground with the associated planing restrictions etc.

Someone more knowledgeable should add to this but this is my understanding.

  4. Hi

It really depends on how you are actually connecting to the internet, if you are simply connecting to the other pc and then using the internet connection of that PC  you have been at shielded from any viruses as all the processing will have taken place on the other pc which has all it's security up to date. As you have now done a scan and found nothing this would seem to be the case as no unprotected computer will have survived that long without a single virus.  I'm presuming you have no means of connecting to the internet on your own pc otherwise why would you connect through your hubby's machine?

I think you've done a wise thing by getting the latest software you are now covered whatever is the case.

  5. Hi Nicos

That's quite a sizeable tank and you are making it sound like the water is going to sit in there all the time until you empty it which of course it won't, it's the other 'stuff' which will remain, if the fosse is working correclty, showers, washing machine etc will go in and then out into the filter bed as far as I know.  I'm no expert but I would say you were in a better positon than 80 to 90 % of France who have a non conforming small tank which runs into a ditch somewhere no doubt!

  6. Hi

We had the same issue some years back, I took advice and threatened the artisan with legal action to cancel the devis, he turned up two days later, they are working on the fact that you are a job in their pocket so to speak, they can chase other work but yours is always there to fall back on.  I would find someone who can speak french and get them to make the call, it may work wonders!

On the deposit front, I think most brits would expect to pay, it's how things are done in the UK where I came from, no issue as long as the devis and timescales are honoured.

  7. I'm with smiley, yaaaaaaaaawnnn.

And with cooperlola, he can have his opinion, but surely just the once or twice is enough, I can imagine this guy as the type who would stand on the high street and preach every Saturday, I can see he feels strongly but once you've read about it once you either agree or you don't...

Incidently when I was in Spain recently there were many more of these huge signs and so much more of the countryside on the coast has been ruined.... perhaps you could go and do something about that now..

  8. Hi Elephant

We rent a few properties long term here in France and the letting agency we use has asked us for agreement if someone wants to paint etc.  We have always said go ahead, we want people to feel comfortable and I think most landlords would be the same.  You should raise it when you find something you like, I'm sure it will not be a problem.

  9. Hi Cooperlola

I would tend to agree that was the only logical explanation we could come too, although there are no signs of a tether or a place where a tehter was.  It is also a bit odd that we didn't see anyone in the wood, it's not that far from our house, just the other side of the lake, and they would have had to have been very quiet too.

My only other thought is that due to the requirements for horse passports  these days someone has abandoned a horse in the woods not wanting to go through the registration and costs involved, doesn't really seem likely though that again they would leave hay , I'm hopeful of this one though and will go shake a bucket and see if my dream horse comes galloping along to the sound of the theme tune to black beauty..........

Nice thought, been trying to get the OH to agree to having one for ages, this could be my big chance..........

  10. Hi All

This is a bit of a weird one, we have woodland surrounding our property and on a walk with the dog yesterday I noticed that just as I reached the top of the hill which faces our house there was a pile of horse poo, no mistaking it, it is horse poo.  Now there are no horses any where near here, this is land that we own and so I think that's strange, move a few steps, another pile of poo, then another and another, all under a large oak tree, move a few more steps and there is a pile of hay.

So what's going on in my woods do you think?  It's not the sort of place you would take a horse to graze, it's about 250 metres from the lane which passes our land, there are loads of empty, fenceless fields nearby so no shortage of grazing.  The woods are dense and so grass is not great.  There also appears to have been a vehicle that has driven to this area, there is an overgrown track which looks like it has been driven on recently.

So what do you think?  We have seen deer in the woods and once they came down to drink form the lake, that was fantastic, but horses never!

  11. Hello

I would love a mad duck, can't help on the importing to UK, I guess with bird flu etc it could get tricky.  If you do decide to rehome drop me a PM, we have a lake and whilst there are some wild ducks we have none of our own but would like some, we do have mad chickens though.

  12. Hello

I would most certainly tick the box which is the correct one for your situation, i.e. maison secondaire, it may have some bearing on the size of fosse needed, although I'm not aware they make any distinction but you never know.   If you think about it if you only use the house for 10 weeks in a year you will need to have the fosse emptied a lot less than those of us who 'use' it every day so to speak.

  13. Hi Bob

I think that there are lots of people trying to do this in France, not surprising when you think of how popular fishing is across both the UK and France.  The issue as I see it is that many fisherman seem to underestimate the required size of operation to really get a good income from a lake.  When we were selling our last property we had many enquiries from people who believed a viable fishing business could be run from a 1 or 2 hectare lake.  If you search on here you will see postings from people like rusheslake, he (I think it's he) says you need at leat 7 hectares of water I believe to make a go of it.  you then need to consider access, will fisherman drive a long way south for fishing or would the business be better in the north etc.

The other thing is you do see fishing businesses for sale, one I've seen recently only started in 2005 and they are already giving up on it, of course they may have personal issues which have driven them to sell but even so you do need to be sure you have gone through all of the numbers.  How many fishermen ,at what price and what level of occupancy will you need to keep afloat?

My husband is a keen fisherman and we've been here for 4.5 years, we are very happy, we have a lake large enough to keep OH  happy (1 hectare) but prefered to buy a cheaper option and look at other income opportunities mainly because we couldn't make the numbers add up for us.  We could not afford to buy something large enough to run a fishing business that would bring in the levels of income required.

I hope you cna make a go of it, nothing like waking up in the morning and seeing your own lake stretching out in front of you.

We will be waiting for updates.

  14. Sadly the duckling has not shown, not on this bank anyway, the lake is large (for a duckling) and it could of course be elsewhere but I doubt it as there was one that was finding it hard to jeep up with the others and often looked unstable on the water, I think it was this one that went under and didn't come up.  Good news though the others look fine, just left them some feed.
  15. Feeling very sad and stupid now, deciding that I had to do something as I felt so sorry for them I tried to catch them and waded into the lake, three just swam away squealing, one though through itself under the water twice, an evasive move I assume and did not come up.  So I have done the most stupid thing and I wish I saw your comments before I did this, I would have left them and at least there would have still been four, I feel like an idiot and all I;ve manged to do is get very wet and cold and kill one duckling that without me might have made it.  Can't type anymore as tears are making the keyboard wet....
  16. Hi

We had a lovely duck and 6 ducklings on our lake, I knew of the nest and kept clear of it, they have been happily swmming about until today.  I saw them first thing, just 4 ducklings no mum, they are crying their hearts out but the lother ducks are ignoring them or chasing them off.  What should I do, I'm not sure I could catch them but if I could, should I, I'm thinking the mum may have been had by a fox and that the ducklings may not last the night.

    thoughts anyone

  17. Hi

I would think perhaps one is including stamp duty type equivalent and the other not, normally the notaires fees (including taxes) works out to about 6-8% of the purchase price.

Found this link on Century21.fr, might help:

    http://www.creditfoncier.fr/editorial/Calculettes/Frais_Notaire/Frais_Notaire.html

The site (creditfoncier.fr) also details all the relevant charges, the transfer charge (stamp duty equiv) is stated at 4.8% so this could be the missing number between to the two publications.

  18. Hi Benjamin

Having got drawn into the other thread I thought I would comment on this one.

I too had a mortgage with a 15% interest rate, it was tough but I was 21 and had my own house, I was earning a pittance too, how soon we forget the struggle.

My mortgage was only twice my salary though, that's the big difference as your clip above points out,  I know of some young people having 5 x salary mortgages, the lenders had them self certify their salary, telling them it wouldn't be checked, it's criminal and if the rates rise they are scuppered.  The other point is the dramatic rise in interest only mortgages, if the house prices don't continue to rise, again they are up that infamous creek, imagine a return to the huge repossessions of that era, finding your house worth less than the interest only mortgage you've got on it, not a nice thought at all.

Mind you I came here to get myself off the mortgage treadmill and now I find myself with 2 having decided to enter the realms of buy-to-let in France, at least these are low fixed for term products, thats something I guess!

  19. Hi

We were warned off of buying something that had a small travellers camp down the road.  The french immobilier, who I trust completely, said that it was not a good investment as the French consider it much as we would in the UK and that does effect the property value potential ongoing whether there are any issues with the people who live there or not.
