1. Excellent - this is more like it [:D]

So Friday 25th March at the restaurant at La Brande... it's a date.

Maybe to get an idea of numbers, perhaps you could just drop me a line to say how many of you will come?  I'll ring and reserve a table for us.

Cathy - yes do combine the two... and we do have a couple of spare rooms if you want to stay over. [:D]

    How very exciting

    xx

  2. Hello - I had my three month review this morning following my radiation treatment and (his words not mine) the doctor told me that the cancer was sleeping - so can we please stay nice a quiet [:D]

Thyroid Cancer, like dogs, is for life... so I will see him every 3 months for monitoring and have a scan every 6 months... and if the cells wake up they'll deal with them.  But for now, I can breath a big sigh of relief and open the champagne.

Thank you for your kind words, help and messages over the last few months - it's been very much appreciated [kiss] [kiss]

  3. I think Friday lunchtime would be good... but of course depends on coops and everyone else :)

Sorry if I seemed to be bossy - was just trying to encourage a few more to join in [:$]

p.s. wish me luck... I have my review tomorrow to see if the prayers have been answered and my treatment worked [kiss]

  4. Where is everyone?  Roll-up Roll-up... do we want to meet during the day or at night?  Is friday lunchtime a good day for everyone?

Where are all the 24's hiding :)

    xx

p.s. apart from the two lovely people who have already replied [:$]

  5. Hi Coops - we're ok for Friday 25th, Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th for a Bergerac/Dordogne meeting :)

There are loads of restaurants in and around Bergerac... I guess it depends on folks budget and tastes? Also, do folks want to meet/eat in Bergerac or perfer to meet outside somewhere?  So many options... There is a nice restaurant at La Brande (20 minutes north of Bergerac) they do a nice 12 euro menu and it's quite large... I've not been during the day but I think they're open?

Not sure this helps but it's narrowed down dates? [:D]

Just think about this. Mr X buys his house for £6000 in 1972 and lives there until 2005 when they sell it for £350000 and moves to France. Now THAT discrepancy between what the bankers were prepared to loan for that purchase in 2005 and the original buying price is in simple terms the 'debt' that the whole country is now paying for. It has enriched Mr X who says, I worked hard for my £6000 house and I deserve £350000.

If no one else can see that, well tant pis. It was all greed fuelled, what a legacy, I feel ashamed.
Idum - that's a huge simplification... my FIL bought a house for £200 after the war... and sold it in 1972 for £6000 and thought he was rich... earlier generations fed off of the commonwealth and before that the slave trade.

You also make a huge assumption that Mr X is here only because he sold a house... I'm not Mr X... nor Mrs X... but I did work very hard, I'm a bit like ANo.... left home young with clothes and a few records and everything I have I've made through work.  Unlike you, I dont feel ashamed.

  7.
Anyone read Fatherland about an alternate reality where Hitler did win the war? Was made into a movie of the same name with the delicious Miranda Richardson in it too.
I think so... It must have been about 15 years ago?  I had a the paperback bright red with a black swastica on the cover I think... took it on holiday to Ibiza and had a few raised eyebrows around the pool :)  If it is the same one it was a great read... didn't know there was a film.

p.s. going to see the film on Sunday and very much looking forward to it.  [:$]

  8. Hi Pads - it was indeed a post from way back when [:)]

We didn't go searching for the lake, we just happened to drive through the village and there it was.. destiny of course [8-)]

We had a lovely time thanks, we went to the African wildlife park near Narbonne and son loved it... indeed we all had a great day there.  Went to the Fortress at Salses, Collioure, Port Vendre and we took the Yellow Train up into the mountains... sadly it broke down half way up (believe it or not because of snow of the track [blink])  so we were taken back to another station and had a taxi take us to our destination... then we had a coach for the return journey.  There was very little snow around and the driver was explaining how unusual it was and how folks were very worried that it would effect the tourist trade.  Howeever we did have a nice day, walked into Spain for lunch and back to France for the bus home.

We also explored Maury a little, very pretty countryside... and went up to the chateau at Queribus... fantastric views from the top! There were so many things we could have done but we sadly ran out of time... but there's always the next time!

Certainly the popularity of e-readers is a disquieting trend as the the closure of 200 Borders Stores with Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Personally it bothers me not at all whether woman read literary "pap" on paper or not. But the future may well be a deficit in serious literary and academic works to the detriment of serious readers. I suppose a dumbing down of standards was inevitable.

Am I missing something here... I read the article and I

can't see why you felt the need make the comment about women needing literary

"pap".  What prompted you to make such a comment or was it just

because it makes you feel good?

Of course it is possible book stores are feeling the pinch because books can be

purchased from sites like awesome books and supermarkets... and of course the

likes of Amazon?  I love books, love to keep them, love the feel of them

and I buy a lot... OH and son are the same.  However, we now buy from

Awesome... or other book sales... and we can find many a bargain for a pound or

two... but hey, that's just my opinion and as I do read a bit of

"pap" now and again it's possible I don't understand?

Whether the move ultimately is successful or not, I am sure we will never regret it, but instead we will take the experience with us and congratulate ourselves that like many on this forum we did it and were brave enough to do so.
That just about says everything that needs to be said - best wishes to you all and I hope the moves goes well.

p.s. have you been to St Emilion recently [:$]

  11.
This lake looks very much like the one at Puivert as there is a chateau there very much like the one in the photo,   The glider being towed off is also a givaway.     Don't tell any one, as it's a secret
MajorM - it's been a while since I asked about the lake in the photo but yesterday, on our long drive back home, our route took us through Puivert... as we passed and I looked up at the chateau and then I saw the sing for gliding and then of course I saw the lake and yes... it was indeed our lake! Now I know where it is we can plan to revisit on our next trip down south [:D]

p.s. well done also to Jongleurs/Fiona... who also spotted the lake [:$]

  12. I also sort of agree with Simon-come-lately and Chancer and Coops... so I wonder why I'm posting as I'm not adding anything new [:$]

We moved from rural Devon to rural Dordogne so there wasn't a huge change in lifestyle for us.  We've been here nearly 4 years, we've seen some two families move back to the UK for different reasons.  It's taken a while but we do now feel very settled... I have quite a busy social life, a good mix of family time and friends time and just a very little bit of work... my diary is pretty full and I never seem to have any spare time.

I miss old friends and have considered moving back to Devon - but it's not for me at the moment.  When I learned about my cancer I considered moving back... because I missed my closest friends and I was worried about possible language problems... however, even this wasn't enough to send me back.

I love returning for holidays - I do miss Devon  and the seaside... but we moved to France because we love being in France... and for us its enough.  If that changes, we'll re-evaluate... as someone already said - never say never. [8-)]
