Map of results by departements as they declare:
http://tf1.lci.fr/infos/elections-2007/resultats/
That's an interesting map! Am I right in thinking that the red (Sego) areas correspond roughly to where the bulk of Brit expats are? It might explain why those of us in predominantly blue (Sarko) areas see a different France?

Indeed, would the notoriously parsimonious Scots
And the French are all arrogant sellers of onions. The English all wear pinstripe suits. Black men have all got huge appendages.
This "debate" just goes on getting better. What a lot of bitterness people have in them, and how easily it comes out when one feels oneself to be in the majority.

Been through this before, Benjamin. My "landlady" is 24. Left school at 18, got her degree in 3 years, started earning, and here's her house. 21-year-old niece has just bought a house with her boyfriend, no degrees involved anywhere, not even A-levels. Loads of young people (mid-20s) at work, they've all got their own houses.
It's probably true of London, but London's a capital city, and you would expect it to be expensive, just as Paris is more expensive than la France Profonde.

Update
It now transpires that one N. Kinnock is a director of the company that supplied the vote counting technology. That combined with the Lib/lab pact coming up with the idea in the first place makes me want to find a darkened room to lie down in for fear of irony overload. Were they really arrogant enough to think that making voting more difficult/confusing would be to their advantage?
I doubt it, Motorhead. "Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity". [;-)]

But if ever you're in Aude and want to go back to basics, come round ours for a trad carbonara.

Me first, cos it's my thread! [:)]

An awfull lot of nonsense has been said here!
Hasn't it just! And much of it has sounded like Daily Mail soundbites, at the same level as tales of Poles coming in en masse and getting given 3-litre Jaguars and living in palaces for £50 a week while our poor British children can't get on the property ladder. [+o(]
Motorhead speaks sense.

It's the result of a few hundred years of shared political heritage.
England spent many centuries trying to get its hands on Scotland. You may wonder why they bothered, but they did.
Sure, split up the Union, I don't see the problem, but really, it's a bit pathetic to present England (50m population compared to Scotland's 5m) as some sort of poor, defenceless victim. Have some pride! [:)]

What a lovely debate! Try replacing "Scot" with "Asian" and see how it sounds. [:)]
There are so many Scots in the Westminster Parliament who think they can run a country, try running their own country of birth, not the Union.
Yeah, send 'em all back where they came from! There are limits to multiculturalism.

Hi Polycarpe, not sure which resto you're referring to, the UK or Montpellier!
The Montpellier ones may have had authentic ingredients, but as you point out, you mix the egg in in the pan, not after you've served the spaghetti into dishes and left it to cool down for a while! [+o(]
The UK one with the cream was lovely. Cream turns up in a lot of Carbonara recipes, although more in the English ones than the Italian ones.
I'd rather have cream than a raw egg in its shell! I'm happy with cream! [:)]
If you are Scottish: if Scotland was to become independent - would you return ?
Assuming you to be English, Russethouse: if England were to become independent - would you return?
-
This is one thing that is vastly superior in the UK! Had some yesterday in an Italian restaurant, and it was just as it should be, with cream and eggs and bacon.
I've had it twice in France (having assumed that the first time was a horrible exception!) and they give you a plate of plain spaghetti with the ubiquitous fatty lardons......... and a raw egg. [+o(] No cream. By the time the spaghetti is delivered to your table, it's no longer warm enough to do anything to the egg. Yuck! [:D]
I have to say that I'm really enjoying the variety available here in the UK. Italian, Indian, Chinese, pizza, and there are plenty pubs that do decent food too.
The downside is that I'm now FAT, but hey, it's the price you pay for happiness, cos I do like my food! [:D]

TV, from now on just read LanguedocGal's posts, okay? She has just said EXACTLY what I would like to have said if I wasn't such a degenerate slug. [:)]

I used to teach statistics and the only one I can find that is universally accepted is that France has the highest work output and works the least hours for any EEC country and US.
But again, that's not in a vacuum. There are fewer people in work in France than in some other countries, and those few have to get a whole lot done in 35 hours, so productivity looks good. The price you pay for that is lower wages and higher unemployment.
[The vast majority of French people think, as do the vast majority of Brits that not only is capitalism a fine thing, but that "there is no alternative". There are, however, a few others living in France, who disagree. All French are not the same.
Of course. Which is why I disagreed with the view that "the French" fight capitalism. You have the patience to be eloquent, I don't, so I'd just say they're gagging for it!
It's just one of the things that make France France, nesspa? The difference between the belief and the reality. Their belief in their revolutionary nature is so strong that they get other people to believe it too, but I look around me and I see a population that is conservative, traditional, and that doesn't like change. Quite sweet really.

French supermarkets don't sell nearly enough Fairtrade stuff. Maybe one jar of coffee in your average planet-sized supermarket.
-
The cinema is very popular on non-sunny days, but not many visitors want to see films in French. Is there a VO cinema near you?
One of the things I love about France is their constant fight not only against capitalism but also to keep their own identity and France French.
Who fights against capitalism? I think it's just talk. People stampeded to find the cheapest phone operators when the phone system opened up. They'll do the same with electricity, and with everything else. Up till now I think they've been very controlled, but as soon as they have the choice, the vast majority will base their choices on their purse, just like the rest of us.
France is perfectly good at globalisation. There are Carrefours all over the world, there are French jets and weapons all over the place. They're as keen on exporting as anyone else is. When they stop eating McDonalds and shut down their foreign supermarkets, I'll believe the talk. [;-)]

If you were to register as a job seeker with the ANPE, you could use their 'couveuse d'enterprise' to test out how well your business would work, and establish the best company setup for you.
How did you find out about this? I've done all the ANPE stuff, not an iota of a glimmer of a suggestion of a possibility of going in this direction.
Did the bilan de competence, they said I could do a formation as a secretary and earn minimum wage.

Sounds to me like a brilliant opportunity to learn Polish!
But if that chair was for giving birth I'm blinkin' glad I didn't live in that era.
In France, that era is still happening!

Where I come from, doormats go outside the door.
I'd be worried if the bottom of the door was high enough to open over a real doormat!

Don't they still use these in French hospitals for women during childbirth? It's the stirrups that give it away.
Scots - would you go back ?
Well, let's see. Most Scots are white, not brown. Asia is not a country, but a continent. Scotland and most of Asia have a completely different relation to England historically.
So? In a multicultural society, how come politically correct lefties would never say "Asians go home" but feel at perfect liberty to say "Scots go home"?
I really don't get that.
Scotland is such a small and insignificant country. I really, truly can't see why the English feel so threatened by it. It's very strange and not entirely healthy. But there, it's nice to have someone to blame, non? [:D]
