1. Given that when you do dare look they will be doing anything else but paying attention to what is in front of them then the safest place for all concerned is for them to be a close to your bumper as possible.

I reverse onto my driveway, it makes sense because visibility to drive out is limited, 100% of the vehicles on the road are speeding and also its the law although I am the only person to do so.

As I approach the vehicle behind will be on my bumper, we come into a zone 30kph 500m before my place so I slow from 50 to 30kph which further enrages them and they drive even closer, 150m from where I will stop to reverse I start indicating right, slow down even more and 50 metres before put on my hazard flashers, I stop just beyond my drive to reverse into it but of course cannot because I have a fuming Picard gesticulating wildly behind me, in the time that he lets off steam other vehicles will have pulled up equally close behind him so he cannot now reverse, many will then drive onto the pavement to pass and one I memorably T-boned by reversing my trailer into him [:D]

Twice in 12 years the person behind has left a sensible distance, has seen the road is clear ahead and has overtaken me while i am braking without slowing down and without being inconvenienced, only twice in 12 years [:(]

I feel like chasing them to give them a medal [:D]

  2. The elephant in the room is that for the first time they will be able to enforce the viewing only within the UK.

I watched nothing but French TV for 10 years, I thought then I would be safe to fit a sky dish and watch a bit of each, it only took about 2 weeks before I stopped watching French TV completely [:(]

If the satellite transmission stopped tomorrow and internet viewing was only available to UK customers it would actually be good for me but traumatic for many others.

  3. I have been knocked off my bike in town more times than I can recall, never happened once in the UK, at least twice on a cycle paths, I was once chased a couple of hundred metres along one by a maniac reversing.

The cyclepath was put in at great expense to provide safety for the factory workers either cycling or walking, I zm one of the few two wheel users loads of cars use it either as a short cut, to overtake or to avoid the regular convoi exceptionelles, when they do they take great exception to a cyclist who will not get out of their way.

  4. La bouche à l'oreille is finally working well for me, I wanted to remain with monthly rentals until April/May, the German company with Polish workers who were supposed to return on Jan 7th must have taken the hint regarding their late payments and they didnt show up,  nightly rentals freplaced the loss and considerably more during the last 2 weeks, during that time I had a constant stream of demandeurs from the far corners of France, the 2 flats are now relet for 3 and 6 months respectively from the end of January and I had to turn away 3 other decent candidates.
  5.
If you go the pump route (the picture you showed is not dissimilar to ours) remember that if it can pump a distance of let's say 30 metres, if you introduce a 4 m vertical bit in the piping network, the overall distance will be reduced to may be 20 metres.
It doesnt happen often but words fail me [8-)]

  6. Not sure whether to be flattered or insulted to be considered as weird as Oprah and Dr OZ!

I simply like the taste and texture, seemingly it is rubbed (from where the Arabic name comes) and then set fire to which burns off the chaff, this gives the distinctive taste, and then sun dried, it probably still is made in the traditional way at the moment.

  7. I fitted a sanibroyeur to my pied à terre in the UK, one of the options was an up n over outlet but I was concerned about solids remaining in the vertical leg during a prolonged absence,  I needed to do some testing so I rigged the thing up in the garden with a 3m high vertical stack and a right angle bend, it looked like a periscope.

I filled the cuvette in the normal way à l'abris des regards indiscrètes carefully carried it outside, connected the garden hose pipe, the electric and the periscope without having checked which way it was aiming.

I pressed the button while sheltering under a  golf umbrella, I didnt need it for I had massively underestimated the power of the thing, the shredded waste cleared my garden, went across the public footpath and touched down in a neighbours garden [:-))] as luck would have it  I could not have aimed it with better precision [6]

  8. Frik, Farik, Freekeh, Freeken, call it what you will but I love it!

Has anyone else given it a try?

I have avoided potatoes, rice, pasta etc for 5 years now and putting carbs on my plate that I enjoy eating can be a challenge, I like sweet potatoes and was really pleased to find Ebly and the supermarket versions in France because I liked the taste and texture but the Algerian/north African staple Freekeh (blé verte cassé) has taken this to a whole new level.

And seemingly its very good for you as well although I do hope it doesn't become hyped up as the next superfood like Quinoa.

So try it but keep it to yourself!

At the Arab market they only had Frik concassé and not cassé, same roasted taste but smaller grained like Boulgar, I found the proper cracked version very cheap from a UK internet wholefood Platform.

  9. Yeahbutnobutyeah.

Once you have pumped upwards to say the ceiling void then you need enough depth for the waste to fall in the normal manner.

Whilst most people including trades in their ignorance use 1/40 for all drainage it is only correct for a 4" or 4 1/2" pipe, to get the corect velocity of between 270 and 330 fpm requires agreaterr fall the smaller the pipe, the correct fall for a 32 or 40mm waste pipe cannot often be achieved in the depth of celing joists except for short distances, better to go up a pipe size.

  10.
"If the rain water from the gutters goes to the mains sewage can't you use them ????? " A surface water drain must not discharge into a foul water drain.
All the gutters from my street are connected into the sewage drain as is all the surface water drainage from the road so I was not overly concerned when I re-arranged all my gutters.

If where you live the surface water goes in a seperate run off sewer and is untreated then connecting a sink to it is not the best form but when you look at the trottoirs around here that have open gulleys connecting the supposedly surface water drains to the sewer and see the amount of Richard III's, toilet paper, condoms and sausages being sent to the seaside then a bit of sink water would freshen things up no end.

The restaurant that was beside me would wait till late at night and then pump out the waste from their cellar into the (then) open gulley removing the discharge pipe as soon as it was done.

  11.
As Chancer suggests just an attempt by a stupid lawyer to get his client off or at least spread the blame.
Yes, that is my opinion, its not for or against anyone, its my opinion of a stupid lawyer, his nationality does not come into it other then such insensitive and stupid media comments are frequently trotted out in this country, he may not even be French, its not a pre-requisite.

Whether the driver could have braked earlier or not would have made no difference to the tragic outcome, the human eye cannot define and obstacle at a great enough distance to bring a train to a safe halt, its why they have super load klaxons.

If pedestrian crossings all had CCTV and the images were transmitted to the driver (the technology exists) and his responsability was to ensure that the passage was clear beforehand while there was still braking distance it may avoide a tragedy involving a broken down vehicle but would do nothing for those who commit suicide or manslaughter.

That just about sums up the incompetence of the overpaid avocats and experts that flourish in the French legal system.

The train would have taken a mile or more to stop, even Trump's Tweets show more signs of intelligence and common sense, more needless pain for the families of the victims.

  13. BiB.

Graandfather lived at Callestick, father retired to Holywell Bay and moved from there to Mount Hawke.

As with any place that I have fond memories of, visiting again after many years is always a negative experience, there is not much modern "progress" that improves a place in my eyes, others would see turning somewhere into Dubai as progress.

One place I recently drove through where I used to work was Edenbridge in Kent, the main drag through and high street are unrecognisable and it for me was an exception because it was well done and an improvement.

  14. What area in Cornwall BiB?

Its changed massively in the time that I have known it since the 60's, my earliest memories, my grandfather sold his cottage in 1984 to move into sheltered housing, I'm pretty sure the agent scammed him as he was told he was very lucky to get £16K at exactly the same time I bought my first property, a bedsit near Gatwick for £24K, the chocolate box cottage is now worth millions and has been ruined in my eyes by massive unsympathetic extensions.

My widowed father also retired there shortly afterwards with his new wife my stepmother, her family leave a lot to be desired to say the least and soon clocked on that they could move down there, get sacked from their seasonal job and be housed and live off the social for the rest of their lives, there are now 3 generations of her offspring there numbering scores and not a worker or contributor to society amongst them.

My father moved from the first retirement property to another smaller more manageable new bungalow close to a doctors surgery, a new private estate with hard working neighbours, over the course of 15 years it totally changed, housing associations bought up every property sold and moved in the dregs of society, my father was the only person who was not allegedly disabled, and who paid for his own roof over his head and his own vehicle, all the others had brand new motability vehicles and despite their alleged disabilities all worked part time up to 18 hours a week on  the books (and a lot more off the books) so as not to impact their benefits.

  15. My response definitely said appâts and not apparts, must be my piece of **** windows computer winding up the elderly once again.

I know that it said appâts because I used the spell check on the word as I wasn't sure of the accent.

And then this elderly Mr Magoo must have clicked on apparts [:(]

Have you retired the other scratched record entitled Brits in the Dordogne from use ALBOF?

Some of them not only use Windows but have food shopping delivered from Tescos.

My machine cannot be any slower on a fibre optique connection especially when the place is full of guests making illegal downloads.

He is right though, its not about the speed but to use my terms the quality of the connection, I would simply like to be able to scroll down a page without, pauses, jumps and jerks, I would like to type as now and the characters appear on screen as I type them, 11mb/s should be enough to type text [:(]

Yet when I connect to my neighbours Wi-Fi in the UK or my mobile as a hotspot the computer is lightning fast like I have never experienced in 10 years yet the speed is a fraction, same story with the mobile phone when its not connecting to my ADSL, pages load and can be scrolled so I realise that my computer plays some part in the problem but its mainly the ADSL connection which is supposed to be fast but in reality is anything but.
