1.
We have our milk delivered, and for as long as I can remember it comes in the same plastic bottles used by the UK supermarkets.
Quite possibly coming from the same milk processor as well! Same bottle - different label!

  2. A quick telephone call to a man who knows, advises the latest fixed illuminated speed advisory signs can work independently or linked to a radar gun, thereby replicating the actual speed recorded by the gun.

In the OP's experience it could well be the motorists spot wisened OAP's armed with clip board and pencil, but fail to note man with radar gun hidden behind tree. Might even have attended the gendarme school of sneaky-beaky tricks.

  3. For the benefit of the non-believers: http://news.communityspeedwatch.co.uk/
The

Police Support Volunteers will be the Police link to the Community

Speed Watch Scheme coordinators and will provide all the administration

support necessary to enable the schemes to succeed. This will include

receiving all the details of offending vehicles, completing PNC checks

and sending the warning letters to the registered keepers.
On the question of calibration, the equipment used is identical as that

used by the police but with the addition of a removable speed display

panel and as the equipment is provided by the police, do you honestly believe they are going to use uncalibrated devices?

  4. Following a reduction of the 30 mph to 20 mph in my village, there has been a similar initiative. The police have also been busy with their radar traps with apparent success.

I use the road to and fro through the village sometimes several times a day and so far, haven't received any letter addressing my excessive speed nor been subject to being caught in a radar trap.

Just a matter of luck? No, probably more to do with sticking to the speed limit imposed.

I sometimes buy a 4.4l of milk and let it go off and make cream cheese, takes ages to turn, so what they do with it these days I don't know........... radiation???? they do it with so much food these days.
Not radiation idun. The reason we no longer see cream settling at the top of the bottle, is due to the process of homogenisation in addition to the heat treatment of pasteurisation.

Homogenisation involves forcing the milk through filters at high pressure which has the effect of breaking up the fat globules in the milk. This spreads the fat

evenly throughout the milk and prevents a creamy layer forming at the

    top.

The process also helps the the longevity of the milk, and explains why milk "lasts" longer before souring. There is a school of thought towards the homogenisation of milk could possibly be a contributory factor in bowel and heart disease, irrespective of whether the milk is whole, semi-skimmed, skimmed, or 1% fat.

How to get back the milk of old? Find a source of raw milk, i.e.  untreated milk bought direct from registered milk producer such as at the farm gate or farmers market.

I shall shortly be getting one in the UK so read your experiences with interest, I have read that from 2018 it will be illegal to rent a property unless it has an energy rating of E or better, sounds like it wont be too hard to achieve though.
An example, I post that I have lost my life savings in an Icelandic bank and unless something miraculaous happens (like Gordon brown saving the world [:P]) I only have a few euros in coins to my name, the person living in S.D.land would reply saying that his money is safe because he wisely put it in HSBC, the biggest and safest bank on the planet,  I showed considerable restraint in my reply which was "that is a great source of comfort to me" without the [;-)]
The Icelandic bank collapse was a lesson to all in dividing investments between financial institutions up to the limits set by the bank guarantee scheme.

Both my wife and I had investments with the Icelandic bank concerned. Both my wife and I received full recompense of our investments.

Perhaps I'm living in S.D. Land[;-)]

  8. Busy, busy, busy![:)]

Problem with these things, without looking you can go buy what you think will be up to the job - then discover it won't fit or there is some cobbled system in place.

If it's a new installation, then it's far easier than replacing something that's already in place, and will need removing in order to replace with the correct bit.

As a friend found to his cost redoing the work of a P&O plumber armed with a copy of the Readers Digest Book of DIY![:D]

Firstly - most animals have predators, even hedgehogs...that's nature...do you complain that hedgehogs eat slugs and snails ? No because most of us aren't as keen on slugs and snails as we are on hedgehogs... they are not all Mrs Tigywinkle you know [:)]

I take it you've never seen the results of a badger attack on a new born lamb?

Perhaps the Badgers predator has become extinct in this country because in the US predators include golden eagles, bobcats, cougars, and coyotes and sometimes bears.

So with no natural predator, is the species self-controlling its numbers or flourishing to an extent where control may be required? One only has to look at deer numbers within the UK, and they are subject to control.

You say that a suitable vaccine has not been found, but then neither is it proven beyond doubt that the TB is spread by badgers - culling may work for a short time but its not a long term solution unless you really want to rid the UK of the species altogether.

Controlled culling has proved positive elsewhere and there is the science to reinforce this. Talk of wiping the species out completely is quite frankly - rubbish, in a similar way as your previous statement, "The spread of bovine TB is linked to more intensive farming methods", which I note you have not commented upon!

I don't see why we shouldn't discuss it in terms of sex. As a long-term unrepentant feminist I can't for the life of me see why any of my taxes should go to regimes where women are not treated fairly under their laws.

    A very good point Hoddy.

Badgers like many animals are territorial and the numbers will be relative to what the local environment will support. Many animal welfare organisations are against culling badgers, because it simply isn't the answer. Vacination is more likely to be the way to go: http://www.savethebadger.com/brianmay.html

The spread of bovine TB is linked to more intensive farming methods.
Amazing isn't it? Old rocker with plenty of dosh buys managed country estate, then decides he knows better and suddenly becomes an expert on all things wild life. Gets rid of management team and decides to allow "nature" to take over, and he wonders why he is falling out with his neighbours who just may be the ones who will suffer the consequences of Brian May's actions!

"Many animal welfare organisations are against culling badgers, because

it simply isn't the answer. " No they are against it simply because it is the 'in' thing. Strange is it not the hedgehog is declining, yet the fluffies dedicate their time and efforts supporting an animal which has the hedgehog on its menu of desirables for lunch?

"The spread of bovine TB is linked to more intensive farming methods." Please, where do you get that information from?

Vaccination may eventually be a way forward, but only when they've developed a reliable vaccine which to date they haven't.

You mean the groups to which Mr Bloom mentioned, those down the pub, the rugby club, the golf club and the cricket club, not exactly a broad spectrum of society.
Really?

Well even in my rather quiet part of England I can expect to find a very broad spectrum of society within such prestigious locations as all those mentioned above. That includes everyone from the attendant at the local tip, members of the judiciary, doctors - both junior and senior consultants, a national newsreader, police, ambulance and fire fighters, farmers, estate agents, and many more.

How much broader a spectrum could be found elsewhere I don't know!

  13. Regardless of whether you're intention is game or clay pigeon shooting, as a visitor to another EU country you will also require a European Firearms Pass issued by the police force who granted the shotgun certificate.

If the OP is only a visitor, without the EFP your shotgun certificate means tiddly squat to the French!

Salty Sam, that's an interesting comment from the caravan forum. Personally I think it's pathetic if you have to call out a breakdown service for punctures (unless more than one happens at the same time, as has happened when vehicles have run over metal spillages on the roadway).

All this does is bump up the cost for all the other members who maintain their cars and can do the simple things themselves. Changing a wheel... really!!!! It ranks with running out of fuel.
Pathetic you may think Sid, but also spare a thought for those of limited mobility, advancing years, or strength issues battling to undo wheel nuts with a flimsy wheel brace. One could also question the vulnerability of a lone female with a puncture in a remote location!

I think there are too many possible scenarios to just discount calling a breakdown service for changing a wheel, as pathetic!

  16. A cautionary tale from a caravan forum:
This was posted on another forum, and is rather worrying for those who have joined ADAC for cheap British and European cover:

I joined ADAC two and bit years ago, mainly because of the

positive comments by others on this and other forums.   I took the

"Partner Plus" package as it covered my wife and I any where in Europe

    including the UK.

In 2011 whilst on the way to Dover I had a puncture on the

caravan,  I called Munich and they sent out the AA to asist me.     In

November I had a puncture on my car, I called Munich again, they sent

the AA to asist.   I called them again in January

this year for a sticking accelarator. Again the AA assisted.

I renewed my membership in January 2012 for the second year.

At the end of 2012 I had letters from them inviting me to renew my membership for 2013.  I paid by credit card on 31 Jan 2013.

Two weeks later I had a letter from them telling me that the

package that I had paid for was being downgraded because of these three

events, all in the UK. The downgraded package would only cover me for

Germany, not the UK or any other country except

Germany.    I wrote to them saying this was unacceptable and asked for

them to cancel the plan and refund my 98.20 euros.

They offered to refund 33.75 euros, the difference between the

two packages and told me I would be a member on the lower version until

    31 Jan 2014.
I'm sure similar "conditions" exist with other providers and it's not limited just to ADAC.

My own current provider lists "Fail to service and maintain the vehicle in line with manufacturer guidelines" as a reason not to provide assistance, and render cancellation of the policy.

No doubt a quick glance at the vehicle service handbook would be sufficient to satisfy that the vehicle has been maintained.

Application of the usual caveat of "Buyer Beware" seems appropriate.

  17.
I am in awe at your knowledge of minutia (spelling?) of the laws, I can see the logic of the above relating to vehicles broken down and causing either no obstruction or partial obstruction on non motorway roads but have always believed that on a motorway you must seek assistance (recovery) either at the nearest borne or by portable and then remove yourself to a place of safety whilst waiting, I was/am certain that you should not effect repairs at the side of the motorway although I suupose what about a puncture and changing a wheel?

If you care to read through my last, the reference was to the role of Traffic Officers in attendance, not to a breakdown where Police or Traffic Officers are not in attendance!

As you say, you weren't there so we haven't received the full story - just your version of events!

I considered that when we freed off the brakes although very luckily it was behind a barrier under a bridge we would both have been given a rollicking and fine had a patrol passed, am I wrong?

I wouldn't know. I wasn't there so my minutia of the laws couldn't possibly allow me to comment!

You know what they say about people that assume dont you [:D] [;-)]

    No!

It still has a little MOT and the tax expired at the end of May, the very next day IIRC or perhaps 2 days after.

I have no idea who pushed him as I wasnt there, he reported it to me on his mobile referring to them as the Gendarmes, I think that its safe to assume that they werent Gendarmes [:D]

If it was the police who assisted, even with valid MOT and road tax, it must have been his lucky day! Some will remember the "Police, Camera, Action" programme featuring the French resident driving a car with UK plates for which he

produced a French Insurance document, and had the vehicle confiscated because

the insurance did not register on the
    police database!

Would you like me to tell him that he also broke the law by taking my call while he was driving?

Apart from the law regarding the use of hand held devices being just as applicable in France as it is in the UK, if you're happy aiding and abetting someone to commit an offence ........[:)]

Are you really allowed to spend 2 hours at the side of a motorway doing DIY repairs? I thought that they would call out a breakdown truck straight away at your cost.

    Bit like making assumptions then![:D]
The powers to allow Traffic Officers to remove vehicles are detailed in

"The Removal and Disposal of Vehicles (Traffic Officers) (England)

    Regulations 2008"

In circumstances where motorists cannot make suitable private

arrangements, Traffic Officers will be able to offer motorists a

"facilitated recovery". The NVRM is appointed to arrange recovery of the

motorists vehicle. Motorists have two hours to make suitable

arrangements. Under Section 99 of the Road Traffic Act 1984, if this

time lapses a "statutory removal" can be invoked. Vehicles that are in a

dangerous location or causing an obstruction - can also be statutorily

removed under Section 99, regardless of how long the vehicle has been in

situ. The NVRM will undertake the arrangement of any recovery. There

are strict controls about the use of statutory removals.
The two hours "to make suitable arrangements" may also include minor repairs conducted on site at the discretion of the Traffic Officers.
