  1. Ah yes I think you might be right they are related, as (bob as we call him) sits early in the morning on our window ledge of the bedroom, he looks in has a peck of the window then lean to one side then leans to the other side, we cant deside weather he is checking us both out on either side of the bed or can he see himself and is just checking that his feathers arnt out of place before going for his tadpole breakfast. (I saw a newt in my pond today, very excited) he is friendlier and cheekier than our resident robin but thats another story. with yours i would advise GIVE UP screw a perch to the door for him to sit on and two little bowls of food  plus a mirror and call him a pet and give him a name................................take care
  2. Time to talk about the good things about moving to france and leave all my worries behind me. Right barring any more leagal issues I will be taking over my house in august in Pradelles Carbardes, my nearest shopping places will be Carcassonne or Mazamet, can anyone advise me of the best and cheapest place to buy a washing machine, a petrol lawn mower, plus other garden equipment, pillows and duvets, dishes/knifes, forks, ect. The owners have told us they are leaving everything else (oh god i hope) but after reading this forum, I may well need kitchen, furniture, and light bulbs, so you had better let me know about them to.....................also where is the best place to food shop, while we have been out there in the past we have tried (excuse spellings) le'clerk, geant, and another one on the round about out side of carcassone which i forget the name of, which was very good, we like to food shop, as we are very fond of our food, so advise on the best places to get fresh fish and vegtables/salad/fruit and CHOCOLATE would be good to. Also is the market on saturdays in carcassonne open all year? and can any one think of anything else i may need as its been a long long time since i started up home and have become use to all the things i have around me that you dont know half of them are there till you need then? if you know what I mean.........  many thanks
  3. Hello and thankyou to everyone who sent replies, after another ten emails to my estate agent he keeps telling me that everything will be done  before the notaire goes on holiday, and we will just have to sign when we get there , but everytime i ask the question, " by everything being done do you that mean we can have the keys and move in" he never answers me!!!!! but i will keep asking as im nothing if not persistant. many thank again, any more info or words of support at this very tense but happy time will be gratfully received
  4. For the last week, I have got up to find on my drive a large amount of the big bits of gravel from my neighbours drive, all along the edge of my drive, this has never happened before as we are slghty higher and there is a edging between us. I havnt thought to much about it blaming it on the dogs maybe? but just brushed it up and put it back. But today I was sat on the edge of the pond watching the tadpoles quitley. when My resident blackbird flew down and started moving the gravel from my neighbours drive on to mine, and he moved a lot a good shovels worth? why would he do this, its a dry area no worms or other life of any kind. any how he gets well fed on my tadpoles, which i see him eating each morning. but he didnt look like he was looking for anything just moving it ? any ideas?
  5. We did arrange a date(s) of between 19th - 28th aug which was to allow for us to get flights booked ect. at the time every one said they would be there , I emailed to comfirm we had flights getting us there on the 23rd and could we sign on the 24th only to be told he would be on holiday. grrrrrrr.

Will we still be able to get the keys on the 24th if we have to wait for the notaire to return after this date to complete the sale?

  6. Ali@ards

Are you a neil young fan too, ? most people usally say neil who? dont you mean paul (grrrrrrrr) My favorite is after the gold rush. I have lisened to him almost every day since I was 10 years old from record to tape to c.d. now I pod (got to move with the times)  NO he dose not sound like a cat......... how dare you!!!( although hubby says its good music to die with) but his taste is limited only to good women Ha... my husband actually worked with him once in austrailia and didnt get me his autograph i could of killed him.

But any how thats who Im listening to today

  7. I have just had an e-mail from my estate agent (after I sent him one to tell him the dates we were coming) saying that the notaire will be away during this period but we can sign by power of attorney. 1, what will this mean ?and 2 who do we give P of A too?  I can not beleive this as in the first signing we all agreed a period in which we had to be there to sign. He must of know he was going to be on holiday is this normal? from a very worried house buyer
  8. Go to google put (imprinted drives) and loads come up one is www.cobblestonepaving.co.uk  hope this helps we couldnt be happier with ours, but be carefully there are cowboys out there, they have to mix a resin type stuff to the conrete to make it very hard and stop it flaking, a lot dont use this as it is expensive so it looks good for a little while then starts to break up (my drive maker told me this)
  9. Hello

We had our drive in cornwall laid with this about 5 years ago, and its brilliant as there are no joins for weeds to come up through, and very easy to keep clean, we have a grey cob stone effect, and we hav'nt yet had a visitor who hasnt thought it was real cob.

It comes in lots of colours and you can mix the coulours to create your own shade, and you can have it to look like any type of stone,(slate, brick, flagstones,cob,ect...) but check with your agent who you pick because these rubber mats they imprint with are very expensive so they usally only have a couple of popular ones. first they lay metal grids to give it strengh then pour the coloured  concrete on top, you can then sprinkle another colour on top to make it look more natural, (we had pale grey with a darker grey on top to give shades as stone isnt naturally one shade)) then they imprint with the rubber mats. ours still looks as good as the day it was laid. no only used for drives but great for around pools and patios, if you look on the internet there are sites showing examples

  10. Hello After just being woken up by my cat who has just come in my window to tell me he has been beaten up and i better get up now and sort out his bloody nose, duley washed packet of whiskers in his belly and now asleep, I have just come across this thread as i love watching insects in my garden especially in and around the pond, last year i spent a whole day watching small wiggley things in the water float to the surface, split in half and out flew a midgey thing it was fasinating, I dont know the names of much i come across after years of looking in books and never finding what i have in my hand!!!! most books seem to cover the whole world which is usless, I would love to find a local upto date book But they arnt out there. We have a lot of (dragon/damsel flies) the bright blue, green, and red one and the big yellow and black ones that i have always called helicopters.

At christmas I got a great new camera from hubby and havnt even used the macro lens yet, but you have inspired me to get it out and have a go.

Do other people think that insect life evoles (havnt spelt that right but it is 4am and i cant think) very quickely , as a child I can remenber insects, that now seem to of changed, grown much larger , changed colour ect.... Is it global warming ? interbreeding of different insects? or just me going bonkers?

Why dont one of you photographers put together a local book you would be surprised at how many people are interested, If it was simple and easy to look at with the name and a photo, where they like to live, what they like to eat, and weather they are dangerous or not. I dont know about others, but I get bored of trolling through all the bumf , I dont care what it is called in latin and all the other stuff, just give me the basics please!!!

please keep posting your photos I loved them .......Oooooh I have just had a good idea make a web site not a book even easier to look at with better pictures? In a few years you could sell it for millions............

  11. But do you dogs end up behaving like you?

I was having a lie down on the sofa this afternoon(to much work not enough sleep) and started to watch "Animals do the funniest thing" My old dog was lying at my feet taking a lot of interest in the programme as there were dogs barking and other animals making noises. When my young dog came in to let me know it was her tea time, (she dose this by staring at me while moaning and running back to her dish and rattling it against the wall) so I got up and filled thier bowls and called the old dog to come and eat his (otherwise the young one would eat both) while they ate i quickly fed the cats and turtle, then went back in the living room to finish watching the programme only to find my old dog had dragged his bowl back infront of the telly so he could eat while watching telly. Now i know I do this! do you think im teaching old dogs new tricks? I couldnt beleive my eyes as he had never done this before, but he certainly gave me a good laugh.

  12. yes i think cotton pads are a good idea, although you would think if they wore make up they would bring there own removal stuff with them? do you have a little booklet with house info in your rooms , maybe a small note in there asking ladies not to use the towels to  remove make up!

Its amazing how as soon as people go on holiday they complete loose all  comman sence and probaly dont even think that other people have to use those towels after them!

Its nice to see im not the only one who gets up at the crack of dawn

  13.  Hello Try adding some large sultanas which have been soaked over night in either rum or cold tea(no milk) or wine. till they are soft and plump i love them in fruit salads, also you could soak other dried fruits to add with the fresh fruits. why do you say except bananas? do you not like them?
  14. Hello Maggi

I think Dick has said it all really, but as a chef for many years I have found that a lot of people are scared of trying anything new, with this lot I would go for something based on a sunday roast chicken dinner and I dont think you will go wrong and start with a soup . Its a shame for the other guest who probaly have come to france to try local dishes, but maybe with the starter of soup as it is so easy you could offer some else more exciting and just tell this party there is soup if they would prefer it. I dont think the letter needs a reply, He has said they will all eat chicken, and its your job to pick the menu not his.If you make him steak and chips he will think he can tell you what else he wants his way all week, nip him in the bud now!!!!

  15. hello

I dont know if you can get this in france but you need an insecticidal soap or Malathion, or the one I prefer and found it works is a systemic insecticide like heptenophos, it is much easier than the first one as you water it into the plant and it sucks it up and as they suck on the leaf it kills them, the other one you spray on which is very hit and miss, the systemic one needs to be done as soon as you can as this time of year plants suck up more water than the rest of the year hence it will hit them quicker. they are very hard to get rid of so do it a couple of times . the only over way is to cut off and butn all the bits with them on and hope it grows back next year. What plant are they on? they seem to love my lemon trees

  16. massage hair conditioner in leave it on for as long as possible them wash with warm water, it has worked for me with bubble gum, tar and glue which my dog seems too sit in where ever we go.  hope it works !!
  17. Hello

Yes living on a boat was fantastic, we would of brought it down here if there had of been any canals, you dont need to know anything about sailing really, as canals only go one way or the other, its alot like driving but a lot slower, you should hire one and have a go, I really wanted to move out now and after reading up on taxes and every thing else we have decided to wait, but i intend to spend very long holidays, I have been talking to my work personnel manager and he has said that he would be happy for me to take upto 4 months off each year and still keep my job open, i will only be paid for my normal 5 weeks holiday and the rest taken unpaid but that is really good of him. and it would give us a great chance to find out about everything we need to know, I couldnt go out there for ever and not work though, as i like to earn my own money and have a bit of independance, I would love to do a little bed and breakfast, but i dont know if our house would be suitable but it is something to think about.

D o you have a time scale for getting your house built, or is it a on going project........ I dont know how you find any time. running a pub, I managed one one for a year and it nearly killed me(bl....y hard work) and 4 kids too. you must have the patience of a saint... have you been teaching them french, it is great for kids to be bilingal.

I love the sunflower fields as well, I grow just a few here each year and they always remind me of france.  speak soon dont work to hard........
