  1. I'm really vigilent about it as my first name begins Ab I seem to get loads of spam or viruses, in my last job them help desk would ring me if something had made it through the main frame and hadn't managed to block it,  I also get loads of unwanted txts as I seem to be at the top of everyones address book! which is really anoying when I'm in France and have to pay for them!!!!! (I have sorted this with a bolt on from O2) anyway that's more relevant to another thread [;-)]
  2. As we're fast heading towards the winter timetables I'm unsure where to book my next set of flights to, we have a French car which I leave at various airports. I fly out of Liverpool in the winter with Ryanair (as far as I'm aware they are the only people who fly from the North England to SW / South France in winter) Currently the car is at Nimes and will be left there this time, as far as I can tell they are flying there up until end October I was planning on leaving it next time at Carcassonne, at the moment Ryanair are showing 2 flights a week for winter.

Has anyone any ideas about flying from the North West England to somewhere near Herault in winter? or the likelyhood of the Carcassonne flights being cancelled in winter?[8-)]

  3. [:)]Thanks for the info, Its now down to just one person whose email I don't recieve who hadn't updated their virus protection and is still having loads of problems with their laptop, unfortunatly they are the ones who are the newest to email but I think a friend of thers is trying to help them. I'll forward the links to them as they can recieve my emails ok and see if their friend can fathom it out.

  4. Has anyone else had any problems recieving emails in the UK from people using Orange France as there ISP?

This has been going on (and sometime off) for about 6 weeks. I had a fixed ISP number for my email from Tiscali , people would send me emails and get a message along the lines of this is a blacklisted ISP number and get them returned, I can send them emails no problem. I spoke to Tiscali who says that there is no reson as far as they can tell why I should not be recieving these emails, but to be on the safe side I thought I'd change the fixed number to a variable one (sorry don't know the technical name for this) Of the 3 people who I new for a fact had sent me emails one now can but still nothing from the others. I don't really know what to do now as we are about to buy another house and need the email to transfer forms etc and as I'm not an Orange customer I don't seem to get any joy there. The people wo are Orange customers that I know well are technophobes so don't really know what to do.

    Any ideas?[8-)]

  5. I would nearly always leave it clean and tidy but not a full on spring clean but I made an exception with the last gite I stayed in, if it hadn't been August I would not have stayed, the china was chipped and dirty and the loo wouldn't flush [+o(] also when decorations are 30 years old its hard to get them clean. I believe that most people will look after things if they are a decent standard to start with. I was on a house hunting trip and when I phoned moh we referred to it as the Bail Hostel, so when I came to leave I just walked out of the door and didn't even empty the fridge or do the washing up, they do not do gite owners any favours and it would certainly put people of the area.
  6. I was feeling guilty about being a little bit lazy [;-)] so have now contacted a broker, we did use one when we got the first and it was useful as my french was even poorer then than it is now! The doubting Thomas in me does wonder how independant they are and with our recent French experience there is nothing like walking into an office to get things sorted, email is just too easy to ignore! But if I ask for a list of the best 4 mortgage deals and have a close look at who is offering them I don't suppose we can go too wrong!
  7. Thanks for that, its a lot easier than the one I was looking at with Credit Acricole, we Bank with BNP and had our mortgage ith UCB does anyone know how competitve they are, as we're self employed the easy option is to stick with them as they need so much paper work when applying for a loan, or is that just being lazy [;-)]
  8. We've had a French morgage but have now sold that house and are looking to buy another, we don't have an English morgage so all out income can be used as the calculator for the French one. Our income has doubled since our last one was calculated so I've no idea how much we can now borrow, Is there a ball park calculation we can use to get a rough idea? I know that thers is some rule about 30% of your income being used to calculate the monthly repayments but I don't know how that works back to a total amount that you can borrow.
  9. My understanding is that now it has to be presentd by a fiscale agent, although the rule came in 2 years ago to what was allowed in the calculation it seems to have bits added to it at regular intervals so its almost impossible to keep up to date with what should be included.

The starting point is purely the buying and selling price, nothing else is considered as to whether it has to be sent to a fiscale agent, it seems that unless you actually sold it for less than you bought it for excluding agents and Notaires fees that the calculation has to be made therefore the fee paid, and as a side line they do not make it easy even to proving that you pay tax in the UK, even giving them the last 2 self assessments is not enough, the problem is that although they are "experts" in calculating tax they have no idea what UK forms and statements are about.

They can only hold onto the amount of money you disagree about not the balance, so I've been told ,but I've not put that into practice yet

  10. As far as I know they are fiscale agents who the Notaire instructs, which as far as I'm aware is open to abuse and back handers I'm sure there are good and bad just as there are good and bad Notaires, I'm still not sure what redress you have if you don't agree with what they say, but I got the distint feeling they won't look that closely at the factures before they rule them out.

It has to be paid to the agent if CGT needs to be looked at , so if its a second home and you've had it 10 years yes it has to be paid, you have to agree to pay it before you even know if your liable to pay anything

Thats a very interesting article and I am going to forward it to the Notaire as we haven't agreed to pay it yet, thanks

  11. We've just sold our second home in the Gers and I'd like to highlight an important bit of info I missed when we decided to accept a low offer.

There has been much discussion about the change in what is alowed to be claimed in the new plue value rules, which is anoying as you when you made your mind up to do the work it was included anyway thats beside the point. Our agent never told us when we we're asking about if there were any fees we'd have to pay as sellers, the buyer would pay the notaire and the estate agents fees, and we'd pay for the specialist reports completely failing to tell us that the is a 1% fee for calculating your capital gains based on the selling price even if there is nothing to pay, which is a significant amout as its wholly based on selling price.

So if your looking to accept a low offer on a second home your selling, please take into account this fee as we only found out the actual amount it cost 3 days before the completion which was a double blow as they decided not to include half our builders factures in the CGT valuation.

Anyway we're of to Mallorca in search of better weather and a more cosmopolitan lifestyle but a whole lot of new rules and regs to find out about![:)]

  12. Yet again Will to the rescue! Have been poking about on the old lap top and seem to have found where I can change the internet settings. I will look on FT website and see If I can get something set up before I go next time.

If I go into local area connection properties it says connect using broadcom netxtreme gigabit etherne net, should I uninstall this as i want to use a hard wire?

  13. Thanks for all that, I don't mind having a contract just not one that has a minimum of a year ( 6 months ok) Here is another dumb one, can you still have ADSL/Broadband if you plug the lap top in rather than wireless ( I did have a wireless router and a plug in card and it was nothing but trouble and took the company I bought the lap top 3months to get it to work so really don't want to want to try and set that up on my own, I thought a a hard wire would be easier)

As we have a FT phone line do you think that is the best option to be the ISP provider.

My lap top is an Acer inspire 1510 which is probably about 3 years old as it was set up with this dodgy plug in wireless router, I assume there is a modem in the lap top to hard wire in, how can I check?

Can I use dial up to my english ISP in the short term, how do I change the number being dialled to include the international codes. I ahve vague recollections of doing this in my old job 6/7 years ago but can't for hte life of me remember how to do it.

I'm determined to get this sorted out before we actually get there, it just will take me a while!

  14. There must be someone out there who can help, reading all the other posts that someone else with a new lap top got, I really do need advice on which ISP will suit my needs with no fixed term contract, also what cable do I need to plug into the phone line where do I go to get one, and how do you set up an ISP, I assume it will give me a new email address, so how do I get that to put all my mail in outlook, I know these a really dumb questions but thats me with IT , dumb. please help.
  15. I flew Liverpool Carcassone check in bag was 14.9kg just ok but hand luggage did not weighed but didn't way more than 10kg, what I'd like to know is when people check in on line with just hand luggage when is it checked to see if its over size or over weight, I watched one lady try to stow her hand luggage in an overhead locker and she could hardley pick it up so there do seem to loads of inconsistancies, The only time I've ben charged for excess luggage was with BMI Baby Manchester Bordeaux but it did weigh 23 kilo and the limit is 20 which I thought a bit pedantic as I only had a very small carry on.

How have people found getting through security at Liverpool, have you paid the £2.00 to get through? I'm really miffed by it and make sure that I'm there in loads of time so I can get through the cattle class lane. Role on Manchester Bordeaux re opening for spring[:)]

  16. We've found that doing Ribble valley ( 45 mins north of mancheser) to the Gers 1 1/5 hours south of Bordeaux that its better to do your sleeping on the ferry (Portsmouth/ Saint Malo) at least you know that the car / van isn't going to get broken into and all the precious cargo stolen [;-)] its quite a schlep in france but as your that bit nearer the ports it should be under 7 hours, we've contemplated doing the tunnel when we do the big move but have decided against it.
  17. I'm a real luddite when it comes to this kind of thing but have marginally more IT skills than the other half so its down to me to sort out.

We hope to be moving to our house in france full time in about 4 monthes but want to try and have everything up and running when we get there as we are in the process of selling our business in the the UK stress levels are quite high.

    • So at the moment the house has a France Telecom phone line which was switched to our name last July.
    • I have an Acer lap top (not wireless) but no cable to plug into the phone socket
    • The lap top is set up with Office outlook and I would like to continue to use this
    • we don't want a minimum contract as the french house is also up for sale so we hopefully we wont be in that house for a year so a by month account would be best.
    • I've checked our phone line on degrouptest.com and it says we can have up to 8 mega wotsits

I think these are all the key points so what do I need to do now?

Haven't posted for over 6 months but glad to see the same faces about, and hoping your oracle skills are still as on form as they used to be.[:D]

  18. If your still based in UK , you need to re check the tax situation on Capital Gains tax as you will pay it in both countries, from my understanding its 16% in France in the first 5 years and the the money wether its brought in to the uk or not will be taxed as well as a UK resident, there are lots of posts about this in the finance section , just use the search facility in the top right corner.
  19. I'll be really miffed if they stop the flight to Bordeaux from Manchester, I always use it, at least once a month and have done right through the winter so as to do my bit to keep it viable, they stopped Toulouse in winter so if Bergerac is stopping in winter as well, cheap flights might be a bit hard to find. At least with Bordeaux planes can land in fog unlike Bergerac I really in a bad mood now[:(]

Just checked travel supermarket and there are no direct flights in November from either manchester, leeds bradford, liverpool to either Bordeaux, Begerac or Toulouse I now even more in a bad mood, lets hope some new time tables appear!

  20. It looks like I can get the long term parking sorted but now for the car, I want to buy in France and have been looking on French ebay to get some ideas of prices. I would like a left hand drive diesel version of either of these 3 A classes, are the prices comparable to the uk? The thing I get most confused with is that I only want the long wheel base version (LWB) but have no idea what this is know as in France and does anyone know what these levels of trim were known as in France? Questions questions!
