  1. Welcome, We,ve been here 4 years, never seen weather like this but with the woodburners pumping out heat we can enjoy the Dickensian Christmas appearance of our orchard and woodland even though the impression of , a poor man hove in sight gathering winter fuel, on my trips to the barn can get a bit less than fun.

When the sun mlanages to get through, it is really idyllic.

Hope you like it as much as we do. www.leschenauds.com
  2. We moved here years ago and last year qualified for UK pension which is now paid every 28 days into our bank account. We run a small campsite which provides a little income but serves the purpose of meeting new friends.

My wife moved over first and declared income of the first years income from the campsite. We have never been asked to provide proof of income (except for tax purposes) and even received a tax rebate after the second year. Whatever income you have, yuou will find it easier to live on it certainly, in this part fo France, the Creuse.

Loads of what one reads in books written by the experts are out of date and seem to provide a 'worst case' scenario. The french are deservedly famous for their love of beaurocracy and their penchant for ignoribg the rules that they don't like.

Most difficult bit for me is struggling with this damn french keyboard.
  3. I dont hunt or even wish to hunt but as much as I admire Mazan’s skill and knowledge of all things electronic and applaud the guidance which he has given me and many others, I can’t support his attitude to the ways in which others legally choose to pass their leisure time. In the UK, although I didn,t like it, I felt that hunting with hounds whilst legal was a personal choice., now that it is being banned, no one is happier than me. If one asks for information using this excellent forum, they shouldn’t expect to be subject to a dismissive tirade. It,s a small world but we all have to live in it. Most of the French hunters have been doing it long before we expats arrived so let’s live and let live. It is always difficult to get a balanced viewpoint from a high horse. (Still haven’t got the hang of this French keyboard)
  4. We have had our campsite here for 4 years now. Had very few problems setting up bank account, health cover, other services etc with just a little guidance from our french or british locals. The local french have been so friendly and helpful and we feel as much if not more at home here than in the UK.

Most important places are within easy driving distance and the driving here is so much more pleasant than the UK with little traffic and usually well maintained roads. Banks are in most towns, we use Credit Agricole, and bank cards can be used to get cash from the bank machines, usually 24/7, or from cash machines at most large supermarkets. The weather has been a trifle variable like most of europe recently, 2003 started wet and warm, moved on to hot and sunny for the summer and a superb hot sunny autumn followed by a mild winter. 2004 very nice April and May, June damp and mild, July and August just acceptable for summer and Sept/October hot and sunny. This winter had been quite mild until 2 weeks ago when we had nearly a foot of snow ( fortunately accompanied by sunshine most of ther time) followed by a couple of nights minus 10 degrees C. But during the day the sun makes it like a late spring day. generally, the weatehr changes quickly with Xmas morning starting cloudy and frosty but by 11AM sitting on the terrace in the sun drinking spiced hot wine.

A dull day can end up glorious and vice versa.

Whatever the weather, the style of living mellows it. Whilst our campsite is small, only 8 pitches, in the past 18 months over 20 of our visitors have ended up buying properties here, 12 to live permanently and the rest as holiday homes.

Three of the permanent have moved here to give their children a better life.

Neither of us has very good french but it gets better each day and we have found coping in a strange country quite fun and nowhere as difficult as they would have you believe if you have half a brain.

If you would like to ask any specific questions, please feel free to give us a ring or email. www.leschenauds.com

    We wouldn,t go back.
  5. Dick, don't cook with germolene use it raw, put it on the both of the dogs cuts and bites where it only stays for a few minutes before it is licked off = they seem to like the taste.

    Other preferred items include:

    Ready Brek

    Rice Crispies

Used to ask for Indian and chinese spices etc but now buy them for a brilliant oriental spice shop in Limoges.

  7. I'm no expert but I bought all the bits from www.dabs.fr and built my own which meant that 1. I got the specification that I wanted 2. I could use some bits of my old PC (Floppy drive, extra CD writer, Monitor,UK keyboard and Mouse and my existing software. So a top spec with most of the bells and whistles cost me less than 500€.

Instructions came from a website for those wishing to build their own and I did learn a lot about the inner bits of a PC. It was a very interesting, satisfying and rewarding experience.

  8. Having a campsite we are lucky enough to have lots of UK visitors who can bring over stuff for us our normal needs are:=

    Atora Suet

    Marmite

    Strong bread flour

Kingsmill sliced loaves( for the freezer, makes the best toast)

Tetley tea bags (But we have enough for nearly a year now) having cornered the central France market in same.

Birds Custard (Creme Anglais is too runny and too sweet)

    Germolene

When I think of the others, I'll post them.

  9. I used PVA glue thinned down with water to a spraying consistency and it worked fine. That is what stabilising solution is anyway which is the same as the roller blind stiffening solution. I bought PVA glue in gallon cans in the UK as it is so useful for many things e.g. to paint on smooth surfacer as a paint primer as well.
  10. I have a patch called DSOSTOP.EXE which I downloaded from the organisation which discovered the worm/virus. Can't remember the name but a Google search on DSOSTOP should find them.

For most problems, I can highly recommend www.windowsbbs.com. they have a bunch of PC experts who can advise on sorting out even the most difficult problems. It is a free site and you can, if you wish, subscribe. I found it so useful that for the first time I hve subscribed to something on the internet as theri help has saved me both time and money.
  11. When I asked our Maire what the 'Troue Normande' was on the menu for the free repas provided by our Commune he told me that it was something to 'make every day seem like a summers day' and on top of the aperitifs, wine and Champagne, he was right. It was a dish of Apple sorbet liberally spiked with pear 'Eau de Vie'. Delicious but a kick like a mule.

This will be our 4th Christmas here and every one has been fabulous. Two years ago on Christmas morning I was sitting on the verandah in short sleeves drinking mulled wine in the sun.
  12. Like Russethouse, we used to live in Reading and up until about 10 years ago it was a fine country town with a mix of old and new but since then, the town centre was 'redeveloped'into a pub and club filled precinct with huge, enclosed shopping malls, presumably to insulate the shoppers from the cultural desert around the central area. Dicksmith hits the nail on the head, the local council is coining it. One of the main drivers for leaving was the increasing crime (mainly petty), anti social behaviour and the tremendous traffic problems caused by the policy of trying to make the town centre competitive with the peripheral Commercial Parks.

Wild horses wouldn't drag me back there.

One of our nephews went to Reading university after we left for France, he gave up his course after just over a year and moved to Loughborough because he didn't like having to go into town, as students do, without half a dozen or so other students for support. He tells us that foreign students were particular targets for the local bully boys.
  13. There are a number of Supermarkets in Limoges,Carrefour,Conforama, leclerc etc. Not sure what qualifications are necessary for a Hypermarket. many places in the Limousin are on ADSL (Not us, quelle dommage!) as we are just a bit too rural, but we do have Sky the next down from the full package.

The best we can do for internet is 9online 19€ per month fopr 100,hours but better than nothing.

  14. Agree wholeheartedly with the other posters. Once a week, I run (in this order) 1)Spybot S&D 2)Adaware and 3) AVG antivirus. All downloaded and all free (my favourite price).

If you still have problems try an online scan from Trend Housecall - It takes some time to load and scan but seems to be the most thorough option.

Your best bet for answers to PC problems is www.windowsbbs.com, again, free but VERY helpful.
